INTRODUCTION
You may have heard your friends talking about all the amazing
bargains they have found on eBay. You may have also heard how
other friends have sold a lot of their unwanted items from around their
house on eBay and obtained some welcome cash to help towards a
holiday or other special treat. Perhaps you have also heard of a friend
or two who actually trades on eBay for a living buying things wholesale
and selling them on eBay for a profit.
Perhaps you feel that you would like to try out eBay for yourself and
have excitedly had a look at the eBay website but have been put off by
the account opening process. Your friends have also told you that they
pay for the items they buy, and receive payment for items they sell,
using a service called PayPal but you haven’t got any idea how to open
a PayPal account and am too embarrassed to ask them. They have
also talked about how important it is to become “PayPal Verified” but
haven’t a clue what they are talking about.
Well, help is at hand! In this Guide I will show you through simple,
illustrated, steps how to open both an eBay and a PayPal account and
how to get verified. So grab yourself a coffee, put on some relaxing
music, and let’s make a start opening your accounts!
NOTE: This Guide takes you through the entire process of opening
an eBay account and a PayPal account so by the time you finish this
Guide you should be ready to start buying and selling on eBay.

STEP 1
CHOOSE YOUR COUNTRY
The eBay website you choose to use to open
your eBay account should be the one which
covers the region in which you live. This ensures
the website you see uses your local currency and
language and you can link it to your local bank
account. Once you have opened your account
you can buy items from ANY eBay website.
eBay is an international company with websites in many countries
around the world and each country has slightly different procedures for
opening an account. In this guide I will concentrate on opening a UK
eBay account (as this is where I personally live) so the screenshots
may not exactly match what you will see... but they should be
sufficiently close to guide you through the process.
As I mentioned in the yellow box above; it is important that you open
your account using the eBay website in the country nearest to where
you live. This will ensure that you see the website in your local
language and see auctions in your local currency. However, once you
have opened your account using your local eBay website you can buy
items from any eBay website you like.

THE NAME & ADDRESS SECTION:
This section is fairly self-explanatory but there are a couple of points
to bear in mind:
Name and Address
These details need to be the same as shown on your bank account to
save complications later on.
Primary Telephone Number
Enter your Area Code in the first box and number in the second box.
Make sure this is a landline (not a mobile) and that you have access to
the telephone when signing up (i.e. don’t type in your daytime work
telephone number if you are signing up to eBay at the weekend while
you are at home). The reason for this is that eBay will make an
automated call to this phone number during the signup process to tell
you a PIN number to type into your computer to confirm your identity.

to then your identity check will fail as you will be unable to answer the
phone and write down the PIN number you are told.
Email Address
Make sure you type your email address in correctly and that you have
access to this email account when you signup as eBay will send you an
automated email containing a link you must click on to confirm your
email address.
THE USER ID & PASSWORD SECTION
Your eBay User ID
The name you type in this box will be your username that everyone
will see when you buy and sell items. It will be your ID seen by the
whole eBay community. It is therefore worth taking some time to
choose a unique name you will be happy to become know by. The ID
can contain numbers as well as letters but no symbols and must be
unique within the entire eBay community. It is the fact that it must be
unique which can cause you problems as you may find all the best
choices of ID are already taken. I suggest typing in your first choice of
ID then clicking on the CHECK AVAILABILITY button to see if it is
available. If it has already been taken then eBay will suggest some
alternatives as shown in the screenshot below:

You can choose one of the suggested alternatives or simply type
another choice of your own. You may have to do this several times
before you discover an ID you like which is available.

If you forget your password eBay will ask you a Security Question so
you can confirm your identity.
When you click on the Security
Question box a list of questions will appear:
Choose whichever one of these questions you like and then type your
answer into the Secret Answer box:

USER AGREEMENT
This section displays a random sequence of characters [1] which you
must type into a box [2]. If you have trouble reading the characters
you can click on REFRESH THE IMAGE [3] which will display a different
set of characters, or you can click on LISTEN TO THE VERIFICATION
CODE [4] which will speak the numbers.
After you have typed in the characters and checked all the answers
you have entered onto this form click on the CONTINUE button.

CONFIRM YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS
After you have clicked on the CONTINUE button in the previous Step
eBay will automatically take you to a webpage asking you to check
your email inbox:

asking you to fill in your email address and type in the PIN number

CHOOSE A PASSWORD
Whether you clicked on the PAYPAL ACCOUNT menu item within MY
EBAY in the previous step, or simply clicked on the SIGN UP FOR
PAYPAL button on the webpage visible at the end of Lesson 1, you
should be taken to the PayPal sign-up webpage:
Notice that your email address [1] and contact details [2] have already
been automatically filled in. All you need to do is think up a password
of at least 8 characters, enter it into the PASSWORD boxes [3], and
click on the orange AGREE AND SIGN UP button [4].

STEP 3
ADD A CREDIT CARD
We completed the previous step looking at a confirmation screen
saying your PayPal account has been created. If you can still see this
confirmation webpage on your screen click on the ADD DEBIT OR
CREDIT CARD link:
Alternatively, if you have been distracted and can no longer see the
confirmation webpage, you will need to log back into your new PayPal
account then click on the PROFILE link [1] then ADD OR REMOVE
CARD [2] menu item on the menu which pops down:

STEP 1
LOG INTO YOUR NEW PAYPAL ACCOUNT
If you forget your password PayPal will ask you a security question
before they will email your password to you.
When you log into your new PayPal account for the first time you will
be asked to choose two Security Questions and provide Answers.
Go to the PayPal website so you can see their homepage and then click
either on the LOG IN link along the top of the screen [1], or on the
LOG IN button [2]:

STEP 1
GO TO YOUR ACCOUNT OVERVIEW
If you only want to buy things on eBay then there is no need to
register both a Credit Card and Bank Account with PayPal as you can
PayPal can use your Credit card to pay for purchases. However some
people do not like Credit Cards and prefer to pay for purchases by
drawing money out of their Bank Account instead. Also, if you intend
selling on eBay, then you will need to register a Bank Account so you
can withdraw the money you receive as PayPal will only let you
withdraw money into a Bank
Getting your PayPal account verified also lifts sending and withdrawal
limits.
To start the Verification process click on the GET VERIFIED link on your
PayPal Account Overview page:

WAIT FOR THE DEPOSITS TO APPEAR
You now have to log out of PayPal and wait a couple of days for the
two PayPal deposits to appear in your Bank Account:
You should be looking for two small Deposits from PayPal for less than
£1.00 each. When you know the exact amount of these two Deposits
it is time to log back into your PayPal account.

CONFIRM THE AMOUNT OF THE DEPOSITS
When you know the amount of the two PayPal deposits log back into
your PayPal account and click on the GET VERIFIED link on your
Account Summary page:

Click on the CONTINUE button and you will be taken back to your
Account Overview page where you will see your STATUS now shows
you are Verified:
