Is Periodontal disease linked
to Prostatitis?
In a paper published in the Journal of Periodontology researches from Case Western
Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical
Centre discuss their new evidence.
The researchers compared two markers: the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) used to
measure inflammation levels in prostate disease, and clinical attachment level (CAL) of
the gums and teeth, which can be an indicator for periodontitis.
Patients with healthy prostates will have a PSA level of less than 4.0ng/ml levels. Higher
levels can be an indication of inflammation or malignancy. A CAL level above 2.7 is an
indication of periodontal disease. Both prostatitis and periodontitis produce high levels
of inflammation.

The study divided the participants into two groups: Those with high PSA levels for
moderate to severe prostatitis or a malignancy and those with PSA levels below 4.0
ng/ml. All had not had dental work done for at least 3 months and were give an
examination to measure the gum health.

A Note from Dr. Mike
As I sit and write this months newsletter I can’t help reflect on the weekend we just past. After beautiful April, May as turned out so far to be
cooler and rainier than I would have liked. The Victoria Day weekend is
just about here and I am even more hopeful for the good weather.
Just as we can’t always predict the weather; so it is that we cannot
always what will happen in our mouths and how what happens in our
mouth can impact the rest or our body. I read two interesting articles
recently that I have summarized and I hope you find the information
interesting as well.
Please let us know if you have any questions about your oral health and
how it relates to the rest of your body or how we can help you become
as healthy as possible.

The study found that those with the most severe form of the prostatitis also
showed signs for periodontitis.
Periodontitis is also linked to heart disease, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. This
study gives us just one more reason to keep our mouths healthy to promote total
body health.

Tooth Whitening
Diabetics who already have kidney damage should be careful taking vitamin B
supplements. A recent article in the Globe and Mail looked at a recent study
published in the Journal of the American Dental Association. Diabetics often
take vitamin B to offset their risk of heart disease and stroke. The study
showed that in diabetics patients who already have kidney damage, that the
risk of heart disease and stroke is actually increased along with further kidney
damage when high doses of the vitamin are used.
The authors of the study recommend that diabetics who have existing kidney
damage should not take high doses of vitamin B. Vitamin B in multi-vitamins
are considered okay.
The authors feel that it is the existing kidney damage that dose not allow the
kidneys to flush out the vitamin, leading to a toxic build-up. Patients should
check their vitamin B level with their medical doctor to determine if they have
a deficiency and if supplements would be beneficial.
