All submissions remain anonymous. email: The Editor About-Turn Newsletter [email protected] Always write the name [if known] on a piece of wood with a marking pen etc., and the date when you add that piece of wood to your collection. If it is a dark wood, stick some masking tape to it and write on that. This will help you remember as time goes by as your stock of wood increases. To reduce subsequent wood movement on finish turned boxes, rough turn the top and bottom sections and let them rest for two days before you do the final turning and fitting of the lid. Blue Mountains Woodturners Inc. are hosting a “What can YOU do with WOOD” event on Sat October 19th at Glenbrook Village Green with a variety of events for both Clubs and the attending public. More info on www.bluemtnswoodturners.org.au Show & Tell conducted by Aaron Barry Child Barry presented a vase (which he describes as a ‘weed pot’) as an example of inside out turning using pine and finished in EEE polish. Barry continued the gardening theme with an example of turned apples. Meg Webster Two magnifying glasses with handles of Hairy Oak. A unique spinning top with tray combined with two disks. As the top spins in the tray it picks up the two disks and spins them also. Finished in EEE and shellaglow. Paul Vincent Bowl in Himalayan Cedar. Rupert Linn Attractive urn in Jacaranda with EEE finish. Rupert explained ‘don’t try to make one of these without knowing there is a great deal of sanding required to complete the inside. Tim McGregor Three lidded boxes in Jacaranda finished with shellawax. Tim suggested ‘go light when sanding the join otherwise you expose a gap between top and base. Peter Wicking One NZ kauri bowl, two pens, one in Silky Oak, the other in Beefwood, two table lamps in Wilga and a hollow vase in Camphor Laurel all finished in EEE. Jack Butler One duck in Pine and following Rupert’s previous demonstration Jack made two salt & pepper mills using Banksia nut complimented with top and base in Kwila. Ken Cooper Ken brought in a variable ‘height support’ he purchased second hand. This item assists in stability when timbers are being held and worked in a vice. Aaron Ehrlich Aaron made a variety of fruit such as a banana, cherries, apples, pears and a bowl made of Huon Pine to hold them in. Of special note was the chuck he made to curve the banana. Paul Cosgrave Paul and his wife Tonisha submitted a bowl they had both collaborated on. Paul turned a simple bowl in Bluegum finished in Rustins and Tonisha applied dot artwork. Demonstration :The demonstrator for the day was Ken Cooper. Ken was to demonstrate the steps in making a small stool with a simple round seat and beautifully turned legs and supports. Unfortunately, due to unforseen circumstances, he was given very little time to take us through how it could be completed. He was able to take us through how to turn a leg and the seat, the best tools to use, how to achieve accurate angles and so on. It was very informative on a range of issues. I trust, I speak for all of us, asking if we could have Ken back for a repeat demonstration on stool making, when we are able to give him the time he obviously deserves. Events Diary.
