Considering the financial and economic crisis
in the EU, the discussion incorporated several
important questions: Can the current crisis be
resolved only with economic and financial
instruments or is the broader crisis of political and
social character? Is it a realistic and achievable
challenge to build Europe as a global power? Can
multiculturalism and constitutional patriotism
(awareness of shared values rather than sharing a
common history or ethnicity) be the foundation of a
comprehensive European strategy for integration
and development, instead of relying on the
pervasive mindset of bankers and politicians? How
much space is there for small countries and
potential EU members to participate in panEuropean debate in order to save what until
recently was considered a successful integrative
model?
Before the panel, Dr. Heinz Bongartz, an
official of the Foundation "Friedrich Ebert" in
Skopje, gave a promotional speech for the
occasion of the publication of the Proceedings of
Sixth International Conference of European
integration on "Construction of Europe as a Global
Power: From Market to Identity?" Proceedings
from this conference contain 14 academic articles
from foreign and domestic scholars who discuss
various issues related to the development of a
common European market and identity. Examined
are the political, social, educational and cultural
aspects of the concept of building a common
European identity. In addition, research issues
related to macroeconomics, "green" economy,
intercultural management, protection of consumer
rights, pension reforms in EU countries and
strategies to save the euro are being done. The
texts published in this collection are a selection of
essays that were presented at the Sixth
International Conference of European Integration
on "Construction of Europe as a Global Power:
From Market to Identity?" held on May 19th, 2011.
UACS, in cooperation with the Foundation
"Friedrich Ebert" - Skopje, is proud to announce the
Seventh International Conference of European
Integration under the title "Europe 2020: How to
innovative and inclusive Union?" which will be held
on May 17th, 2012, in Skopje (detailed information
