EXCO visits Dormac
The results are out for the first
month of the new Platinum Safety
League (PSL) season. Our Cape
Marine Stormers currently hold 8th
position, with 96 points. Fourteen
clubs are participating in this
season’s PSL.
Members of the Transnet National
Ports Authority (TNPA) executive
committee (EXCO) recently visited
Dormac Marine and Engineering
at our port, to gain insight into the
business. The visit formed part of
a week-long customer strategy
programme.

Beach clean-up
Our netball team received a hero’s
welcome upon their return from
the annual Premier Fishing Netball
Tournament in Saldanha. If there’s
one thing TNPA Cape Town has in
abundance its talent. The team
scooped second place in the final
match.
In spite of rainy weather conditions,
colleagues gathered with much
enthusiasm at Sunset Beach on
20 September to observe World
Ocean Day. They cleaned up areas
near China Beach, the Salt River
Canal, and departmental areas and
offices.

Research shows that when
people are rewarded in their
jobs, they work harder and
smarter. Enter ‘gainshare’…
our short-term incentive plan
that rewards and retains key
colleagues.
Who is eligible for A
gainshare
bonus?
bonus
PERCENTAGE?
A new colleague with at least two
months service is also eligible for
gainshare payment on a pro-rata
basis. Unfortunately, non-permanent
colleagues such as locums, casuals,
apprentices and hourly-paid workers,
do not qualify.
This refers to the aggregate of both the
annual on-target bonus and gainshare
bonus percentages.
What are the
conditions of
bonus
payouts?
•
•
B
argaining unit employees benefit from
gainshare – an incentive scheme that
motivates them in the implementation
of business strategies and achieving business
objectives, while rewarding these colleagues
and attracting and retaining the best ones.
Gainshare is payable to all permanent
bargaining unit and fixed-term employees who
are compliant with conditions as set out in the
agreement. Payments are made quarterly –
directly into the bank accounts of qualifying
colleagues – following the audited financial
results.
2
What IS
•
The quarterly gainshare bonus
percentage applies to Ports who
have exceeded on-target EBITDA,
and the defined secondary measure
target.
Where primary, secondary or both
measures have not been exceeded,
no bonus will be paid.
Payments will only be made
following an internal group audit.
*EBITDA: earnings before interest, tax
depreciation and amortisation
What is meant
by quarterly
payments?
A bonus payable in respect of the
quarterly gainshare payment will be
distributed as follows:
at the end of the first
quarter: calculated on the
guaranteed pay for 3 months
at the end of the second
quarter: calculated on the
guaranteed pay for 6 months
at the end of the third
quarter: calculated on the
guaranteed pay for 9 months
at the end of the fourth
quarter calculated on
the guaranteed pay for the full financial
year.

50%
75%
100%
What is a
full financial
year?
The period 1 April to 31 March is
considered a full financial year.
How can I increase my
chances of qualifying for
gainshare?
•
•
•
•
•
•
Understand what you need to
achieve;
Perform your tasks safely and
smartly;
Increase productivity levels and
work in teams;
Be on time every day and complete
your work on time;
Use equipment and resources
responsibly;
Have a ‘how can I assist’ attitude
towards customers.
Do I still qualify
for my bonus
if I resign?
No, a colleague whose employment
is terminated before the end of the
relevant financial quarter, due to
resignation, will not qualify for a bonus.
This is also applicable for colleagues
who are terminated on the grounds
of misconduct, poor performance or
fraudulent behaviour.
What happens in the
event of death, retrenchment, ill health or
retirement?
A colleague whose employment is
terminated before the end of the
relevant financial quarter due to death,
retrenchment, ill health or retirement
qualifies for a pro-rata bonus.

PEOPLE
TRADINGPLACES
His job is to ensure he enforces all the safety measures
around the Port of Cape Town, but Captain Sabelo Mdlalose,
Harbour Master: TNPA walked in another colleague's shoes
for an afternoon as a security officer. Here’s how it went…
W
e arrive at Sabelo’s office and he’s
the usual busy self but his secretary
assures us that he’ll be done in few
minutes. After waiting a while, Sabelo is
eventually ready for his shift as a security
officer. He looks excited but is clearly unsure
of what to expect. The following is Sabelo’s
account of the afternoon as a security
officer:
14:30
I stand outside, waiting to be
picked up by the security van for
my shuttle to the other side of the port. It’s
27 degrees outside and I can’t help but think
of what’s in store for me.
14:35
I receive a call from another
manager wanting to discuss
planning, but because I don’t want to keep the
my colleagues for the afternoon waiting, I ask
the manager to call me back later.

famous by Sabelo
manage equipment. It’s better to
“ Imanage
equipment than people. ”
14:44
The pilot’s car arrives at the Port
to fetch two pilots for their shift
and I briefly greet them. I then continue my
conversation with the journalist about what
is expected of me for the day.
As Sabelo does not have any experience on
being a security officer, he suggests that
we go to the gate and have a casual chat
with one of the guards, who are very keen to
assist him.
14:50
The security officers always
search my car when I arrive at
work in the morning, but today I’ve learnt
that it takes more than just searching the
car. You need to first do the formal greeting
and ask the person (nicely) if you may
search their vehicles. I ask my colleague
why it's necessary to do this, he explains
that it's to ensure that visitors don’t bring
