Present at the launch was Stephen Greenhaig, representing Boris Johnson and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). Standing outside of City Hall with Tower Bridge as a backdrop, Mark Hallace OBE, Chief executive of the independent charity Crimestoppers, said: “Crimestoppers is the independent charity which for the last 25 years has provided a way for people to report crime anonymously. We all know that people should report crime directly to the police; but we also know that sometimes it is just not practical for whatever reason, from peer pressure to safety or simply from hassle! Well the important thing is to get that information across to the police, quickly, safely and securely, so they can investigate and take appropriate action. That is what we at Crimestoppers help to make happen. Taxi drivers in London have a vital role to play in keeping London safe and they can do it anonymously by ringing 0800 555 111 or on the website crimestoppers-uk.org “Taxi drivers are part of the very L - R; Mark Hallace, Geoffrey Riesel, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe and Stephen Greenhalgh fabric of London life, they are are out and about at all hours in all areas and in all weathers. They know when something is not right and now they can report it anonymously to make sure the police can investigate. Every little helps and I’m sure that taxi drivers can help to make our streets safer in future.” Geoffrey Riesel commented: “I’m very proud that we have started London Taxi Watch. This is a winwin, if London is safe, Londoners feel more secure and London taxi drivers are a part of that and I appeal to the London taxi industry to get behind this. It only takes a moment if you see something or something out of place then call Crimestoppers – it only takes a second to call 0800 555 111.” Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe was pleased to be at the launch and said: “From a simple conversation about a year ago I am really proud of what Geoffrey started and Crimestoppers helped develop. It is a simple idea with about 2,500 taxi drivers involved here, spread right across London 24 hours a day with police always needing eyes and ears to let them know what’s been seen so they can take some action. Taxi drivers are the heart of London, they have a difficult job and they don’t always have the easiest of customers and we are here to support them when that happens and it’s great to see so many of your colleagues are prepared to help us by letting us know anonymously which is how Crimestoppers works.” Lastly it was the turn of Stephen Greenhalgh to add his comments. “This is an historic day as the police are the public and the public are the police. Today Radio Taxis drivers are here to provide that contribution. It is truly essential part of making sure that this remains the safest capital city on earth. It is fantastic to represent Boris Johnson and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and remember these words that the police and MOPAC are right behind you.” OPERATION SEAFORD NEEDS YOUR HELP O by Paul Maleary, Detective Inspector 2330 peration Seaford relates to offences where criminals are utilising Taxis in a scam to collect significant sums of money from elderly Essex residents. Often the suspect will ask for the package to be dropped in East London. Latest figures for the whole county show that in November 66 people, mainly aged over 70, have been contacted by tricksters trying to get steal large sums of cash by claiming that they are police or bank officials. Eight of the 63 people targeted fell for the tricksters’ claims and have lost a total of £39,600, including an elderly woman in Leigh who was tricked into handing over £24,000. The suspects claim to be police officers or bank officials and tell people that their bank accounts have been infiltrated by fraudsters. They ask their victims to draw out large sums of cash for forensic checks, for safe-keeping or so that they can help with an internal investigation into fraud at the bank. During 2013 452 thefts and attempted thefts have been reported in Essex. Although they in the west of the county, around Loughton and Buckhurst Hill they have quickly spread to the south and more recently to areas in the north and north-east, including Harwich, Clacton and Sible Hedingham. Essex Police say that whilst taxis are used to courier items from “Point A to Point B” there must be a point where the drivers are suspicious. Some taxi companies have informed the police regarding suspicious activity and the police have successfully worked on the information and carried out arrests. However, it has also been the case that some drivers have been arrested and only after a period of time in custody we have established that they had no involvement. How taxi drivers can help • Verify the details of the person requesting the collection • Obtain full details as given by the requester including home address • Establish from the person who they are collecting from who has requested the delivery • Note anything suspicious • Inform the police! Page 5 WORLD’S FIRST POTATO SCENTED JACKET TAXI O ffering free hot jacket potatoes that are cooked on board in five minutes McCain has specially designed a ‘Jacket Taxi’ which toured six UK cities for five days from 18 November. Passengers enjoyed a free ride and were offered a piping hot jacket potato, made in the taxi, at the end of their five minute journey-the time it takes to cook the McCain Ready Baked Jacket. McCain’s potato experts have used their specialist knowledge to recreate the warm delicious scent of oven-baked potatoes which wafted out from the giant jacket potato on the roof of the taxi. This meant passers-by were also enjoying the appetising aroma of warm jacket potatoes as it travelled around London, Birmingham, Manchester, York, Leeds and Bristol with its sunset yellow and orange exterior creating a warm glow to everyone it passes. The production of the taxi took five weeks to complete and several potato designs were considered for the giant steaming Ready Baked Jacket which sits on top of the taxi. It has also been adapted inside to house the cooking facilities needed for the perfect McCain Ready Baked Jacket in just five minutes, as well as featuring a flip down tablet screen from the roof. Charles Spence, a ceurogastronomist, added: “People across the UK will certainly do a double take when this delicious-smelling cab drives past them. There is a direct correlation between the smell of our favourite foods, such as a warm baked potato, and how it heightens our level of enjoyment when eating them. I can’t wait to see how people react to the scent as it wafts through the streets of the UK.” T HUGE INVESTMENT IN STREET LIGHTING ransport for London (TfL) has agreed a new energy efficient lighting programme to help reduce the cost of lighting the TfL Road Network (TLRN), while also doing its part to reduce CO2 emissions across the capital. It is one of the largest ‘invest to save’ strategic road lighting projects ever undertaken in the UK, which will see improved reliability and lower operating costs all contributing to better and safer roads. Across London, TfL has some 52,000 street lights, and as part of the Mayor’s pledge to cut CO2 emissions, TfL has begun implementing the energy saving plan which will be delivered over the next three years. By 2016, the programme aims to reduce associated CO2 by around 9,700 tonnes a year and contribute towards approximately £1.85m of savings for TfL a year. The programme will also reduce energy consumption by more than 40 per cent by 2016, compared to the current levels. CENTRAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS) FOR STREET LIGHTING ON THE TLRN This will allow TfL to remotely monitor and manage street lighting and dynamically control levels of lighting depending on use. By adjusting the lighting levels to be aligned better with traffic flows and road usage at different times of night TfL will significantly reduce its energy consumption and carbon emissions, without compromising road user safety or security. The system will remotely record lighting failures, enabling maintenance crews to ensure that lighting levels are restored without delay. REPLACING CONVENTIONAL LIGHTING WITH LIGHT EMITTING DIODES (LED) This will initially see 35,000 street lights updated through both targeted investment and TfL’s regular streetlight maintenance by 2016. The new LED technology will be rolled out across the majority of TfL street lights during the next ten years. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “With tens of thousands of lights marking the way on our road network it makes complete sense to focus energy and resources on bringing them up to 21st century standards. This is the largest investment to modernise street lighting on major roads in our capital’s history and will not only cut carbon emissions and save money but it will also lead to even better and safer roads for Londoners.” Taxi insurance cover since 1921 Proven We’ve been insuring London black cabs for over 90 years – so we know what drivers are looking for. • Exclusivity agreements with top insurers • Flexible payment plans • Highly experienced staff Get in touch today for hassle-free insurance at competitive prices. 0207 446 7675 14-16 Guilford St, London WC1N 1DW www.protector-policies.co.uk Authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Conceived by the actress Joanna Lumley in 1998 and designed by Thomas Heatherwick, working with Arup on a commission from Transport for London, it is planned to feature trees and gardens. 30 metres (98 ft) across at its widest point, it would run from near Temple station, as a continuation of Arundel Street, on the north bank to near the Southbank Centre. If you’ve not responded to the Garden Bridge consultation then you still have time to do so. EDDIE CROSSLEY RETIRES FROM RICHMOND ROAD CAB CENTRE any in the trade will know Eddie Crossley, proprietor of Richmond Road Cab Centre. After 47 years of working not only in fleet garages, but also promoting the trade’s interests through the LMCPA, the Taxi Board and through his involvement in The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers, which he was Master of in 2012, Eddie has now decided to retire. The garage and fleet have been in Eddie’s family for many years; Eddie Crossley’s great-grandfather was a horse-drawn-bus driver before progressing to the hansom cab, and the business of running cabs has been in his family ever since. Richmond Road Cab Centre will continue to offer taxis for rent, pre test work and overhauls, servicing and repairs as the new owner, Sabri Keski, and team from Forest Taxis take on the business. During his years at Richmond Road Eddie helped build the business to have one of the largest fleets of taxis for rent in London. The workshops have also expanded over the years and today offers extensive workshops with a team of highly skilled staff - who are remaining with the new owner. You could say that taxis are in Eddie’s blood as he was a working licensed taxi driver – like his father, grandfather and great grandfather before him. His son Paul, who has also worked at the garage, holds a Hackney Carriage licence too. Eddie was one of the members of the WCHCD invited to drive his Gold Cab in the procession to Buckingham Palace on the occasion of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and he was back there again in 2012 in his role as Master for a Garden Party. Eddie’s extensive knowledge of the trade and T 18 December 2013 Eddie Crossley its history has fired enthusiasm for many in the trade and beyond. At one particular dinner, the Firefighter Massey Shaw annual dinner, the Master Firefighter presented Eddie with a framed photograph featuring hackney cabs commandeered during the war as fire fighting vehicles. This was made in recognition of the London Taxi Trades contribution to the London Fire Brigade when they were in need of help due to their lack of available Fire Engines during the war. During the Second World War, taxis played an important role in helping the fire service, amongst other roles. The drivers were trained as firefighters and were known as the AFS, Auxiliary Fire Service. They specialised in fighting small blazes in the back streets of the capital, often there on the scene before the large fire engines arrived thanks to the drivers KoL. Some of the taxis used for fire fighting came from his grandfathers fleet in the East End. Eddie has also supported some of the trade’s charity events over the years and is a great admirer of the annual Magical Taxi Tour. Eddie is known as a gentleman within the trade and although the business is now sold Eddie is not giving up all his connections with the cab trade. His wife Maureen has also worked along side him keeping the accounts for Richmond Road; now she and Eddie will have some time to enjoy other pursuits, including their love of ballroom dance. Eddie told our reporter: “I have sold my business to Sabri Keski of Forest Taxis Ltd who owns and runs a taxi fleet and garage so knows the trade. All my staff will remain and my drivers will not be affected by the change of ownership so owners and drivers will still get the same high standard of work they are used to. I stayed on to hand over for a short time but now I am looking forward to enjoying Christmas for the first time without the worry of cabs being stuck in the snow!! I will continue with the WCHCD as this has been a major part of my life and I would not wish to lose the friends I have made there.” Firefighter Massey Shaw dinner ANNUAL DINNER DANCE HELD BY TDoY he Taxi Driver of the Year Charity Fund Dinner was held at the Holiday Inn Kensington on 30th November and during this event the Prize Draw Winners were drawn. A four course dinner was served with half a bottle of wine for each guest and was followed by coffee or tea and muffins and Danish pastries. Chairman, Russell Poluck, welcomed everyone to the 41st annual dinner dance and said how lovely it was to see so many new friends and of course, old friends. The Chairman said: “Life is not easy for anyone, but in the cab trade we have to say we are the lucky ones and are able to remember those less fortunate than ourselves... to help someone else we have achieved something good.” Russell thanked all those that supported the charity and gave donations and sponsorship. He continued by saying that all proceeds raised over the last few weeks and on the night of the event were being distributed among the charities here. Following dinner and the prize draw guests danced to “Fraternity” a five piece live band. The Taxi Driver of the Year Charity Fund would like to thank Mr John Anderson, Dial-A-Cab, Dagenham Travel, KPM, Quotax Insurance, Mrs Audrey Sherry, Tradex Insurance Ltd, Ubiquitous and Totes for their sponsorship of the evening. Page 15 UNCLAIMED TOYS LOST ON TFL’S NETWORK BRING CHRISTMAS CHEER TO LONDON’S CHILDREN A mountain of new, unclaimed children’s toys handed in to Transport for London’s (TfL) Lost Property Office this year have been given to The Salvation Army to donate to children in south London so they get a gift this Christmas. TfL gave over 500 lost toys to the Deptford branch of The Salvation Army, for their Christmas Present Appeal. The Salvation Army will now work with Lewisham Council to distribute the toys to those who will appreciate them most and may otherwise have gone without this Christmas. Paul Cowan, Operations Performance Manager of the Lost Property Office, said: “Although it is a shame that these toys were not reclaimed by the original owners, the thought that they will now bring smiles to the faces of many children who might otherwise have gone without is heartwarming. The fact that so many brand new toys have been handed in is also a testament to the honesty of the travelling public in London. The team here work extremely hard throughout the year to deal with hundreds of thousands of items of lost property and it is great to see their efforts highlighted once again through this donation to such a worthy cause.” Captain Kevin Stanbury, of The Salvation Army’s Deptford Community Church, said: “This with local council outreach workers to ensure that the toys go to those who are most in need. As a Church and charity we look to be there for people when they need us, not just at Christmas but all year round, by offering compassionate support and practical help which we hope our toy appeals are one example of. We hope families and children who were facing a bleak Christmas can now feel the joy and happiness that the season should bring.” donation from Transport for London is invaluable in allowing us to provide toys to children and families who would otherwise go without this Christmas. Page 17 GLOBAL NEWS US CAB DRIVER KIDNAPS HIMSELF! A 32-year-old cab driver from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been arrested for playing a hoax by locking himself in the boot of his car and calling for help using his mobile phone. When released, he told the police that he had been robbed by three people and then locked in the boot. While making the call, the driver said that he didn’t know where he was so police and county sheriff deputies searched extensively for the cab. The sheriff’s department helicopter was called in to aid in the search and the vehicle was finally found several hours later, just before darkness fell. The driver was released from the boot and taken to a nearby hospital. When quizzed by police, he later admitted to having financial problems and told police he faked the carjacking for financial reasons – hoping for cash from newspapers in return for the story. He got his publicity though when papers picked up the story. Sadly, though, not only did he not get paid but he has also been charged with wasting police time! MOSCOW MINISTER’S CAR USED AS TAXI! A BMW with tinted windows and blue flashing light on the roof stops on Moscow’s main Tverskaya Street. “Vere to Guv?” the driver asks - or the Russian equivalent - and after agreeing a rouble price to the equivalent of £5 or so, he whisks someone to work in unexpected style. It turns out to be a government minister’s car and as is the case with virtually every other underpaid or unemployed driver in the country, furtive private use of the vehicle is a main source of income! He might make an extra £20 or so a day moonlighting between the minister’s appointments and although he may suspect that his boss knows what’s going on, he naturally doesn’t discuss it with him. Another man at the wheel of a clean, but ageing Russian Volga, is the personal chauffeur of a senior police officer. His boss, however, actively encourages him to make what he can on the side. He knows full well that no one can survive on his official salary. From coaches to ambulances to thousands of private cars choking the capital’s streets, all have become unofficial taxis. Although registered taxi drivers moan about the ‘Chastniki’ (minicabs) who spend their spare time ‘bombing’ as it’s known in Russian, they have their own territory in the main tourist areas at hotels, restaurants and railway stations. In the city centre, yellow cab drivers seem loath to interrupt their snooze or put down their detective novel to take a fare of less than £7. There, at least, if someone else wants to get snarled for hours in traffic jams for less money, that’s their business! Other places remain dangerously off limits and the novice Chastniki risks a barrage of obscenities, threats or worse from regulars who jealously protect their turf. An unmarked minibus belonging to the French medical relief organisation Medicins Sans Frontieres, recently had its tyres shot out as it pulled away from Moscow’s International Airport with genuine invited guests from overseas. This incident was simply a case of mistaken identity, since the airport’s notoriously brazen taxi mafia assumed the vehicle was poaching and decided to teach the driver a lesson! Meanwhile, the passengers’ part in the transaction is simple enough. If they are willing – and stupid enough - to take the risk of travelling with strangers, put your arm out, get ready to haggle over the price and bear in mind that riding with more than one person is a known invitation for trouble especially when under the influence of liquor. In fact, the greatest downside of an activity that seems to feed and clothe a hefty part of the population is that Russia being Russia, too many drivers regard their new passenger as fair game for a 40 minute tirade about the state of the country. At least that part is the same as London… PASSENGER SAVES HIMSELF AFTER TAXI DRIVER HAS FATAL HEART ATTACK… Back to the US for this month’s final tale. American taxi passenger Mike Nelson’s worst fear became reality when his driver collapsed at the wheel of his cab following a heart attack while the cab was still travelling along the highway. David Shaffer was taking the fare from Bismarck, Missouri when he suddenly collapsed and died. The out-of-control taxi travelled on for a mile before Mike could manage to stop it. Amazingly, the 1995 Dodge Caravan struck no other vehicles and was not damaged. Mike Nelson was also unhurt. According to Highway Patrol reports, Mr Shaffer picked his passenger up and was taking him home with the two men chatting about old cars. Suddenly the passenger looked out the window and felt the taxi begin to veer towards the side of the road. He looked over and saw Shaffer slumped over the wheel while they were heading straight towards an overpass… Nelson grabbed the wheel and tried to control the cab, however, Shaffer was a very big man and he had trouble trying to steer while keeping Shaffer’s foot was off the accelerator pedal. He tried turning off the ignition, but that just locked the steering wheel, so he quickly restarted the engine. Mr Nelson eventually managed to stop the taxi, grabbed the cab’s radio mike and began shouting “emergency, emergency.” Jo-Ann Martin, a nurse on her way home with her husband, stopped at the scene and said she felt a very faint pulse. As they prepared to try basic resuscitation, an emergency medical technician arrived on the scene and took over, but it was then too late. Sadly the driver had died. Highway Patrolman Doug Hoopman told Global News that it was lucky the passenger was in the front seat instead of the back seat “…as he would have been in your London cabs, or we’d have had an even worse tragedy.” Mike Nelson, looking shaken and extremely upset, told us: “There was an overpass coming close and the cab was headed right for it. Another few seconds and I wouldn’t have been here either.” David Shaffer’s boss was Bill Schumacher. He added: “We have so many passengers who knew him only by his call sign of 20 and many would actually ask if he was free to take them! The drivers also loved the guy. He was the one driver everyone wanted to go onto the taxi stand with.” He ended by saying: “We’ve lost a good one ... our customers have lost a good one too.” Website: www.taxiglobe.info – To advertise in the most independent newspaper – Telephone – 01778 391189 Editorial – 01707 885439 Page 18 Remember – You saw it first in the Globe! 18 December 2013 SERVICING/RENTALS Diff Doctor VITOS FOR HIRE FROM £240 PER WEEK SPECIALISTS IN LICENSED TAXIS Contact George Frost 07774 953055 Tel: 0208 5563134 Unit 11, Period Works George Frost.indd 1 Lammas Road, London E10 7QT 1 FOR SALE JSM Taxis.indd 1 28/6/12 10:32:51 FOR SALE & WANTED • R Reg TXIs from £2000, TXIIs from £3500 to late TX4s from £12,995 all plated • Cabs also wanted (cash paid) • Cabs for rent from £120 per week - first week free, 2nd week half price plus free Christmas week • Finance arranged TX1-TX2 for sale TX1-TX2-TX4 to rent with full back up facilities For further details please ring 07950 811150 18/5/11 12:16:37 BREAKING LONDON TAXIS TX1’s/FAIRWAY DRIVERS All parts now available ** STOP PRESS ** STOP PRESS ** TX1 PARTS NOW AVAILABLE OFF THE SHELF LONDON TAXIS BOUGHT FOR CASH CALL IN OR PHONE R/O 1152 London Road, Norbury, London SW16 4DS E-mail: [email protected] Taxi Smart.indd 1 FINANCE Cantwell 659.indd 1 SECOND HAND PARTS 11/12/2013 09:44:09 Advertise here in Taxi Globe and reach 1,000’s of readers Please contact Jayne on 01778 391189 CANTWELL TAXIS LTD Contact John on 07956354671 [email protected] PARTS Contact Jim 07590 080084 22/08/2013 08:51:23 FOR SALE & WANTED Diff Doctor-687.indd 1 Tel: 0208 764 3242 New TX4 Elegance £255 per week.
