With fall’s cooler weather, many
families feel that their games room

A games room should be a family room, but make sure you know
what you’re getting, says King. The
materials that go into the manufacture of a pool table, the centerpiece
of any games room, are extremely
important, as is dealing with a reputable company. But what specifically do you look for in a good quality pool table?
First he says, is the slate-playing
surface. One-inch think Brazilian
or Italian slate is recognized as the
best in the industry. It’s diamond
honed to 10/1000th of an inch and
cut into a three-piece matching set.
This 1” slate should also be
‘cleavaged’ slate. Cleavaged slate is
the premium slate cut from deep in
the mine. It’s free from any foreign
matter and therefore much denser
and stronger. Cleavaged slate comes
with a lifetime guarantee a gains
warping and ensures a perfect roll
year after year. There are many
tables with 1” cleavaged slate still
dating back to the 1800’s says King.
Frame and Legs – Naturally, the
slate is only as strong as the frame
and legs supporting it. A lot of pool
tables are made from veneers, plywood or particleboard. The finest
table is made from solid hardwood.
Top-of-the-line tables are 100 per
cent mahogany. That means the
entire table, not just the rail, is
hardwood mahogany.
The foundation is important and
will determine the playing characteristics of a pool table for years to
come. Most manufacturers, to save money, will use
either plywood or particleboard in a single beam down
the centre of the table. This type of frame will eventually sag and get out of alignment. Sagging will never
happen with a Twin l Beam solid hardwood frame. A
pool table with such a frame is usually guaranteed for
life.
Leg Systems – The pu rpose of the leg is to support
the frame and slate and add aesthetic value to the
table. The solid hardwood carved leg is found only in
the highest quality furniture style. As opposed to hollow box type legs, it’s made from hardwood ‘permaformed’ into a solid piece for maximum strength.
The Cushions – Synthetic rubber cushions, as used
by many pool table manufacturers to save money will
crack, crystallize and die over time. A dead cushion
makes it impossible to properly bank a shot.
Quality pool table manufacturers only supply highspeed, natural gum rubber cushions on their rails. All
professional tournaments are played on K-66 Profile
Cushions which provide superb, accurate ball
response at all time and will never crack, crystallize or
deaden over time.
The Cloth – Billiard cloth has undergone a complete overhaul in the last few years. Today there are
over 40 cloth colours to choose from. Also the qu ality
of the cloth can determine tha accuracy of a shot.
