How to Formulate and Process Dow Corning® HIP Emulsion Formulation Tips Dow Corning® HIP Emulsions are High Internal Phase (HIP) emulsions that are designed to facilitate the rapid development of skin care formulations which contain a variety of emollients. Designed for quick and easy formulation development, they can be used by themselves or as a way to modify an existing formulation. Dow Corning® HIP Emulsions use a non-ionic surfactant package to provide maximum compatibility in formulations that contain other surfactants. Example formulations and additional formulation tips can be found in product literature for each of the individual emulsions. Processing Dow Corning® HIP Emulsions are a range of products spanning a variety of viscosities from pour able to a viscous paste. Each has the unique characteristic of being a shear-thinning material (see Figure 1). The following information will aid in the selection of the proper equipment to use when processing a HIP Emulsion out of a drum. Customer-Specific Pump Design Considerations 1. Pressure and flow requirements a. Air Supply Pressure: Will depend on plant’s air capabilities. b. Discharge Pressure: Will depend on total pressure required to move the desired HIP Emulsion from point A to point B. Pressure drops due to elevation, frictional losses within the piping, fittings, valves, filters, etc., will also need to be considered. c. Flow Requirements: Will depend on how quickly the user wishes to transfer the material from a 208-L (55-gal) drum into a vessel. 2. Material viscosity See Figure 2 for a listing of typical viscosity values when tested at room temperature and under one shear condition. This is only an example; it is the responsibility of the user to determine the effective viscosity based on the user’s application. 3. Construction material for wetted parts Stainless steel is recommended but carbon steel may also be used. 4. Construction material for seals and gaskets Teflon® material is recommended. Please contact Dow Corning for alternatives. Pump Recommendations See Figure 2 for a listing of pump recommendations. Users should work directly with the pump manufacturer to determine the best design for their needs. Figure 1. Stress Raps (0-5,000 dynes/cm3) for Dow Corning® HIP Emulsions. Storage and Handling Avoid freezing or prolonged exposure of these materials to temperatures below 0°C (32F). To preserve the quality of the material, it is recommended that these materials be limited in their exposure to air. Containers should be resealed when not in use and if possible, the material should be capped (close to the emulsion level so as to limit head space exposure) using a sheet of clean plastic or similar item when stored for extended periods of time as a partial container. Clean-Up Use of a HIP Emulsion concentrate gives you the benefit of easy clean up. In most cases, the water pre-emulsified nature of these concentrates allow for cleanout without the need for cyclopentasiloxane or other solvents in processing equipment. When using Dow Corning® 7-3105 Petrolatum or Dow Corning® 7-3111 Petrolatum Blend HIP Emulsions, a solvent rinse may be necessary should processing equipment have a residual oily feel from the high concentrations of petrolatum.
