Dow Corning 9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend ®

Dow Corning® 9040 Silicone
Elastomer Blend
Formulation Tips
Dow Corning ® 9040 Silicone Elastomer
Blend may be formulated into oil-inwater emulsions, water-in-silicone
emulsions, water-in-oil emulsions, and
anhydrous products. Dow Corning ®
9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend:
ƒƒ May be added to the oil phase or
silicone phase in an emulsion
formulation.
ƒƒ May be post-added to emulsions
provided that the emulsion is viscous
enough for Dow Corning ® 9040
Silicone Elastomer Blend to be
adequately dispersed.
ƒƒ Viscosity may be reduced by blending
with dimethicone or cyclomethicone
for ease of use.
ƒƒ May be formulated with organic oils
and silicon-based materials with the
use of mixers and may be subjected
to high-shear devices such as
homogenizers, and sonolators.
ƒƒ May be subject to heat for a short
duration of time as the elastomer is
stable. When heat is used, it is
recommended that the Dow Corning ®
9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend
be processed in an enclosed
vessel/container to prevent the
cyclomethicone from volatilizing
off and the vessel be inerted at
temperatures over 60° C.
ƒƒ Is dispersible in a variety of liquid oils.

A guide to formulating
and processing
Thank you for your interest in our
Dow Corning ® brand 9040 Silicone
Elastomer Blend. Dow Corning ® 9040
Silicone Elastomer Blend is a mixture
of a high molecular weight silicone
elastomer (dimethicone crosspolymer)
in cyclopentasiloxane. It has a viscosity
range of 250,000-580,000 cp and a typical
nonvolatile content of 12.0 wt % to 12.75
wt %. It is intended for use in antiperspirant
and deodorant applications, skin care
applications such as sunscreen and color
cosmetics, and for hair care uses such as
styling aids. These recommendations are
also valid for Dow Corning® 9045 Silicone
Elastomer Blend.
Customer Specific Pump Design
Considerations:
1. Pressure and Flow Requirements.
a. Air Supply Pressure: Will depend
on plant’s air supply capabilities.
b. Discharge Pressure: Will depend
on total pressure required to move
Dow Corning® 9040 Silicone
Elastomer Blend from point A to
point B. Pressure drops due to
elevation, frictional losses within
the piping, fittings, valves, filters,
etc … will need to be considered.
c. Flow Requirements: Will depend
on how quickly the customer would
like to pump out Dow Corning ®
9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend from
a 55-gallon drum into a vessel.
2. Material Viscosity in cps at the
Application Temperature.
Dow Corning ® 9040 Silicone
Elastomer Blend is shear thinning.
Effective viscosity is ~ 80,000-100,000
cp. This is to be used as an example.
It is the responsibility of the customer to determine the
effective viscosity based on their application. Once the
product is pushed through the pump by the use of a
follower plate and processed in the pump, the product
will shear thin and process as a lower-viscosity fluid.
3. Material of Construction for Wetted Parts. Stainless
steel is recommended but carbon steel may be used.
4. Material of Construction for Seals and Gaskets.
Viton® or Teflon® are recommended. Please contact
Dow Corning for alternative materials.

Processing Information
Many of our customers enjoy the aesthetics that Dow Corning®
9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend brings to their product
application. As customers move their product from the
development stage to the pilot plant stage, they have
many questions about how to handle Dow Corning® 9040
Silicone Elastomer Blend in a pilot plant and manufacturing
environment. Many questions are related on how to pump
Dow Corning® 9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend out of a drum
and what type of seals and gasket materials should be
used. The silicone elastomer blend is a viscous product but
has the unique characteristic of being a shear thinning
material (please refer to Figure 2 of the Dow Corning
Product Information Sheet titled “Information about
Dow Corning® 9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend”). Enclosed
is information that will aid in the selection of the proper
equipment to use when processing Dow Corning® 9040
Silicone Elastomer Blend out of a drum.
Storage and Handling Information
Dow Corning® 9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend is considered
a combustible liquid (per NFPA30 definition of a combustible
liquid) for storage purposes and a flammable solid for
transportation purposes. Precautions should be taken by
the customer to incorporate proper handling and processing
procedures to avoid flame and ignition sources. Please
refer to the safety data sheet for further information.
Cleanup
XIAMETER® PMX-0245 Cyclopentasiloxane is best for
soaking or cleaning equipment as it dilutes the viscosity
of Dow Corning® 9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend to water
thin. Other non-polar solvents could work as well. IPA
is NOT acceptable for solvent washing as it will “dry up”
the elastomer and leave small balls of residual elastomer
behind that are very difficult to remove. However, IPA may
be used on rags for miscellaneous cleanup of equipment
and floors. It does a good job “releasing” Dow Corning®
9040 Silicone Elastomer Blend from surfaces when rubbed.
GRACO offers various Bulldog models. It is recommended that customers work
directly with GRACO to determine the best design that will meet their needs.
GRACO may be contacted by visiting gracopumps.com. Other pump manufacturers
could offer similar equipment that could process the material as efficiently.
