Kerala Ayurveda Academy is committed to offering the highest quality of education and services to our students
so that they become the finest Ayurvedic health practitioners and educators in the future. KAA proudly offers the
same course available in our classrooms via Distance Learning to accommodate a larger number of students
around the country. Our aim is to maintain the authenticity of Ayurveda in the United States.
The KAA curriculum is based on an Ayurvedic educational curriculum from Indian universities and is very
challenging academically. Students will find studying at KAA intellectually stimulating and competitive. The
programs encompass all fields of Ayurveda including Ayurvedic Philosophy, Herbology, Psychology, Ayurvedic
dosha imbalance management, research, clinical practice, and clinical application.
We have assembled the most qualified and experienced faculty to teach Ayurvedic principles. Most faculty
members have Ayurvedic degrees from prestigious universities in India and 15 to 30 years of clinical experience.

The State Approved Institute
Kerala Ayurveda Academy (KAA) is approved in California and Washington and is pending approval in New
York State and Texas. Our academic programs meet the standards set in terms of facility, faculty qualifications,
financial stability and student records in the states where we are approved. KAA is dedicated to spreading
Ayurvedic knowledge and wisdom across the United States. The majority of our facilities include an Ayurvedic
clinic, Panchakarma center, library, herb room and classroom.
The Future for KAA Students
This is the era of complementary medicine. According to a report developed by the Institute for Alternative
Futures—Today, complementary and alternative approaches to health and medicine are among the fastest
growing aspects of health care. In 1990, one-third of the U.S. population used some form of alternative approach
to health care. By the year 2010, at least two-thirds will.
Health science has reached a point where it is no longer accurate to discuss psychology versus biology, the mind
versus the body or nature versus nurture. These processes are inextricably linked. Our beliefs, our emotions, our
behavior, our thoughts, our family and cultural systems, as well as the environmental context in which we live,
are all as relevant to our health as our genetic inheritance and our physiology.
Interestingly, complementary and alternative approaches such as Ayurveda, oriental medicine and homeopathy
already have extensive knowledge of the individual differences built into their diagnostic and therapeutic
systems. We must expect these complementary modes of analysis to become integrated into conventional care.
This is the perfect time for Ayurvedic graduates. They have a unique opportunity in this day and age to create
very successful careers. Licensed health care practitioners can utilize their Ayurvedic knowledge to enhance their
current practice. Massage therapists and body workers can open Panchakarma centers. Students interested in
health and beauty might start Ayurvedic spa and beauty centers, or wellness centers. Freelance writers may start
Ayurvedic publications. Research savvy students may get involved in Ayurvedic research projects—The Office of
Alternative Medicine funds many research projects in holistic health care. Business entrepreneurs might
develop Ayurvedic herbal products, food packages, or even Ayurvedic cosmetics. Students in academics may get
into teaching or may want to deepen their education so they might pursue in-depth studies. It is really up to the
graduating student to invent or discover new avenues. KAA offers advanced classes to further their education
and also offers programs at our Kerala Ayurveda Academic Facilities in Cochin and Bangalore, India.

Kerala Ayurveda Academy represents the integration of several national Ayurvedic Institutions, including the
Ayurveda Institute of America (AIA), the Aloha Ayurveda Academy (AAA) and the AYU Ayurvedic Academy. It is
the first institute in US to provide authentic Ayurvedic programs throughout the country. We currently offer
programs in San Francisco CA, Foster City CA, Los Angeles CA, San Diego CA and Seattle WA and are awaiting
approval for locations in both Austin TX and New York NY.
Ayurveda, the wisdom (Veda) of life (Ayu), is a part of the world's oldest Vedic spiritual system. According to
Ayurveda, harmony at the level of the Body, Mind and Spirit is true health. Ayurveda emphasizes a focus on the
individual rather than a disease. The concept of Body Constitution distinguishes Ayurveda from many other
healing sciences. Knowledge of Ayurvedic science in today’s world is essential. Conventional medicine has its
strength in dosha imbalance management and treatment. Ayurvedic science is aimed at the preservation of
health and prevention of disease by establishing balance and harmony through nutrition, herbs, meditation, and

To honor numerous requests received from prospective students, Kerala Ayurveda is now proud to offer
Distance Learning capabilities to interested students, who are unable to attend our on-campus classes. This will
allow a larger number of prospective students to learn about Ayurveda. With a high-speed (DSL, Cable or
Broadband) internet connection and a PC, students will be able to learn about Ayurveda from an expert faculty.
Both programs will be offered through distance learning.
Utilizing interactive presentations, two-way voice and text communications, and robust testing/grading tools we
have created a powerful online classroom. Through dynamic e-learning environment, Kerala Ayurveda will
present class material “live” so that students can participate and interact with faculty as well as other students on
a real-time basis. Every session will be recorded and will be made available online 24/7 so that students can

Each student receives a workbook outlining the description of the topic to be covered. This workbook is a
skeleton of the program. The teacher will follow the notes for the proper flow of understanding. After each class,
additional reading material will be suggested. The classes are taught in English in a seminar format. Overhead

The total duration of the program is approximately one year. The program will begin in the Spring and Fall.
Classes will be offered on one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each month. After completing this program,
graduates will receive a certificate of completion and will be able to help themselves and others focus on
prevention of disease and preservation of health. Ayurveda’s emphasis on diet and lifestyle has a profound
positive impact on our health. Graduates will be able to spread this wisdom around.

Course Description
KAA 101—Essence of Ayurveda (Tarka Sankhya and Sharir)
We will begin with an engaging introduction to the history and philosophy of Ayurveda. Learn the foundations
of the three Gunas, five elements and the three Doshas. Understand the concepts of Constitution (Prakruti),
Imbalance (Vikruti) and Dynamic Balance. Review the components of comprehensive and individualized
Ayurvedic Treatment Plans & Health Programs. Learn about Cosmology, Sankhya Philosophy and the Ayurvedic
view of the human body such as Doshas, Dhatus, Malas, Marmas, Asthis, Sandhis, Srotas, etc.
KAA 102—Ayurvedic Physiology (Dosha Dhatu Mala Vidnyan)
This session discusses in detail the fifteen Sub-Doshas, seven Dhatus, three Malas, sixteen Srotas, Marmas and
the role of these in health and disease. Explore the depth of the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) and how
they govern the mind and emotions. Other topics: The Definition of Life; Dosha characteristics, their primary
location and signs of balance & imbalance; Agni, its types, its function and its importance in health and disease;
Ojas, its function and signs of increase or decrease.
KAA 103—Ayurvedic Nutrition & Cooking (Ahara Vigyan)
Learn the principles and application of Chaturvidha Ahara, Shatrasas, Ahara Vidhi Vishesha and Guna Karma of
spices and Ayurvedic cooking. This practical workshop will focus on how to use the six tastes of food to
nutritionally balance Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Learn how to evaluate a client’s diet diary and how to use that
information to prescribe an individualized diet plan. Other topics: Definition of Health; Understanding digestion.
KAA 104—Ayurvedic Psychology (Manasa Shastra)
Principles of the mental Doshas, their function, location and origin; Aspects of the mind; Principles of the five
sheaths; Kundalini; The seven charkas and their importance; The three gunas and their characteristics; Mental
Constitutions.
KAA 105—Ayurvedic Prevention Science (Swastha Vritta)
Ayurvedic disease prevention science is wisely and practically incorporated in Dinacharya (Daily Routines) and
Ritucharya (Seasonal Routines). Learn how to use these techniques and procedures to maintain optimum health
and prevent common diseases resulting from seasonal changes. Other topics: Epidemic diseases; The immune
system.

KAA 106—Ayurvedic Herbology (Dravya Guna Shastra)
This practical workshop will focus on the application of Ayurvedic herbological energetics—Rasa, Virya, Vipaka
and Prabhava. The clinical application of important Ayurvedic herbs will be discussed. We will also explore the
science of the Synergetic combination of healing herbs. Spices have been largely misunderstood and misused in
today’s day and age. This informational session will explain the scientific purpose of using spices in cooking.
Learn how to wisely use popular spices to prevent imbalance, heal disease and promote health. We will also
study the various methods of herbal preparation.

KAA 107—Yoga Therapy (Yoga Vigyan)
This course will focus on the essence and application of Ashtanga and Therapeutic Yoga. It will delve into the
complimentary systems of Yoga and Ayurveda, look at Yoga asanas for various systems and explore the many
spiritual aspects of Yoga.
KAA 108—Introduction to Ayurvedic Bodywork
This practical workshop will explore such Ayurvedic Therapies as Snehana, Swedana, Shirodhara, Padabhayanga,
Shiroabhyanga, Kati basti, Lepas, Udvartana and Soundarya shringar.
KAA 109—Introduction to Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)
Gain an introduction to the Fundamentals of Jyotish, the Jyotish Chart (Vedic horoscope), how to read a Vedic
Jyotish Chart, the nature & qualities of the nine planets, the twelve Zodiac signs, 27 Constellations and their
significance. Students will gain information on different diseases and their correlation with the planets, as well as
an understanding of Mahadasha (Major periods), Antardasha (Minor periods), various gemstones and their
proper usage.
KAA 110—Management of Dosha Imbalances (Roga Nidan and Kaya Chikitsa)
Ayurvedic Diagnostics, client examination, Ayurvedic etiology, symptoms and signs of various respiratory and
digestive disorders, their diagnosis, prognosis, signs of aggravation of Doshas, Dhatus, and Malas, herbal
treatment and dietary management.
KAA 111—Review, Clinical Management, Final Comprehensive Examination
Review of course materials, Principles of Ayurvedic Practice, management of legal issues, hands-on clinical
workshop on patient evaluation and case management, questions and answers on the course. Students will be
able to participate in various herbal preparations and Ayurvedic cooking.
Course Project/Research Paper
Students will be required to complete a research paper on a topic to be agreed upon by their instructor. This
paper is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.

Level 2: Ayurvedic Wellness Practitioner (AWP)
Students will get involved in a deeper learning of advanced herbology, pharmacology, pathology, diagnostics
and therapeutics. They will study patient history taking, physical observation and examination. Students will
understand detailed evaluation of imbalance (Vikruti). They will learn how to design individualized Ayurvedic
treatment plans consisting of customized diet plans, herbs and Panchakarma. Students will also learn how to
prescribe Rasayana rejuvenation, daily and seasonal routines for disease prevention. The course includes
detailed theoretical and practical training in Panchakarma.

KAA 201—Dosha Dhatu Mala Vigyan, Agni, Srotas Vigyan
This class will revise Ayurvedic Physiology by discussing Doshas, Subdoshas, Dhatus, Malas, Agni, Dhatu agni
and srotas in depth.
KAA 202—Roga Samprapti (Ayurvedic Pathology)
Students will learn: Definition of Health and Disease according to Ayurveda; The five tools of Dosha Imbalance
Diagnosis—Nidan, Purvaroop, Rupa, Upashaya, Samprapti; The six stages of the disease process—Sanchaya,
Prakopa, Prasara, Sthanasamshraya, Vyakti, Bheda; Signs of Dhatu and Srota Dushti.
KAA 203—Rogi Pariksha (Client Examination)
Ayurveda has a unique method of client evaluation which relies on the thorough observation of a client to
recognize signs on the body that offer an in-depth understanding of dosha imbalance and its manifestation.
Students will learn threefold examination: Darshana, Sparshana, and Prashana in detail. They will also learn to
perform an eightfold clinical evaluation—Pulse, urine, feces, tongue, sound, touch, physical stature and vision.
KAA 204—Panchakarma and Marma Therapy (Ayurvedic Detoxification)
This will be more hands-on class. Along with a detailed theory of Panchakarma, students will learn to give and

Clinical Internship may be done at the Kerala Ayurveda Clinic. At Kerala Ayurveda, every student intern is under
the guidance of a clinical supervisor who supervises individual cases, monitors progress and assures completion
of all required hours and reporting. Student interns who live at a distance from any of the Kerala Ayurveda
locations may complete the Clinical Internship in their home community while being supervised by a clinical
supervisor. Supervisory case discussions may be scheduled in person or by phone at the student's expense. Any
student intern who does not complete the internship program in the allotted six month timeframe may register
for an internship extension with a fee of $300 per six-month extension.

Internship, Through the Eyes of a Student
Of all the multitudes of information I learned while studying at the Academy, I got the most out of my internship. While
the classes were fantastic and taught me many of the Ayurvedic basics, the internship allowed me to put this
information into action. By doing this, I got to see first hand, just how to read a client. It was also helpful to be with
other students. It's so easy to read about a client on a piece of paper and have all of the important information given
to you, so you can decide how to treat the client, but when you actually see them, you have to be able to gather the
useful information. The most exciting part of the internship was the follow-up consultation. It was very interesting to
hear the outcome of client’s hard work over the course of a month. Spending this time with many different clients
allowed me to expand my knowledge of diet, lifestyle, herbs and exercise and how they affect each individual
differently. I have to say, I felt very nervous the first time I went in, to have a consultation with a client, but as time
went on, even in my nervousness I was able to gain confidence. This knowledge will stick with me my whole life. Thank

Advanced Training at Ayurvedagram, Bangalore, India
Ayurvedagram in Bangalore is a 30-acre Ayurvedic herb plantation. Along with a
luxurious resort, there is an Ayurvedic clinic, Panchakarma center, Ayurvedic kitchen
and restaurant. On site, you will also find an herb manufacturing pharmacy, library
and training hall. For twenty days, students lead a completely Ayurvedic lifestyle.
Every morning, they participate in Yoga sessions. After an Ayurvedic breakfast, they
attend lectures and practical demonstrations from expert Ayurvedic professors. In
the afternoon, they undergo practical training in performing various treatments,
pulse diagnosis, evaluation of Ayurvedic body-type, diagnosing imbalance and putting together treatment plans.

Many of our faculty members are established Ayurvedic physicians who have received degrees from renowned

Teri Adolfo, MTCM, LAc, CAP
Teri Adolfo holds a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine (NIAOM), and is also a Licensed Acupuncturist and Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner. She has
worked in clinics specializing in women’s health, detoxification, drug rehabilitation, mental health, and chronic
fatigue/fibromyalgia. She is currently the Clinic Director at the Kerala Ayurveda Clinic, Seattle.
Dr. Vaijayanti (Jay) Apte, BAMS, MS
Dr. Apte is the Director of Kerala Ayurveda Academy. She holds an integrated BAMS degree in Ayurvedic and
Allopathic (conventional) medicine from the University of Poona, India (1973), and an MS degree in Biomedical
Sciences (Pharmacology) from the University of North Texas (1991). Dr. Apte has more than 30 years of
experience in Ayurvedic practices and teaching. In 1997, she founded the Ayurveda Institute of America to offer
the best quality education in the United States. Now, the Ayurveda Institute has merged into Kerala Ayurveda
Academy. She is a past president of the CAAM and is on the NAMA board of directors.
Dr. Rucha Kelkar, BAMS
Dr. Rucha Kelkar is the director of “Ayurbliss,TM”—Ayurveda Wellness for Mind, Body and Spiritual Health, based
in Orange County, CA. She is a dedicated and classically trained Ayurvedic practitioner, educator and
lecturer. She has taught many workshops on Ayurveda, conducted seminars and has been a speaker at the
NAMA Conference on multiple occasions. She has also written articles on Ayurveda for various magazines. Rucha
received her graduate degree in Ayurveda from the University of Pune, India.
Dr. Manisha Kshirsagar, BAMS, LMT, DYA
Dr. Manisha Kshirsagar graduated from Pune University, India with a Bachelors degree in Ayurvedic Medicine
and Surgery. She is also trained at the Indian College of Naturopathy and qualified as a Yoga Instructor from the
renowned Kaivalyadham University in India. Dr. Manisha has been teaching at Kauai Ayurveda academy and
other institutes for more than 10 years. She specializes in women and infant health, skin care and natural beauty
treatments. She offers regular workshops on Ayurvedic Cooking and nutrition.
Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar, BAMS, MD (Ayurveda)
Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar is the Executive Director of Kerala Ayurveda, Inc. as well as an accomplished Ayurvedic
doctor with varied background and experience. He was a research associate with the Indian Ayurvedic
pharmaceutical company Ayurveda Rasashala, a Chairperson of the Department of Medicine at the Maharshi
College of Vedic Medicine in Albuquerque from1999 to 2001, and a medical director and an assistant professor
of Maharshi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa from 2001 to 2002. He has published research articles
and offered lectures, Radio and TV talks in many countries. He has extensive clinical experience in Ayurvedic
therapies and Panchakarma all over the world and has helped thousands of people.
Mamta Landerman, CAS, PKS
Mamta Landerman is a Clinical Ayurveda and Panchakarma Specialist. She is the Founding President of CAAM
(The California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine) and served on the Board for five years. She produced three
Ayurveda International Symposii at U.C. Berkeley, bringing together—some for the first time—the various
lineages of Ayurveda in the U.S. to sow seeds for the future vision of the Ayurvedic profession in this country.
Many joint ventures in Ayurveda across the U.S. have sprouted as a result of these conferences. She also founded
Deva Center for Ayurveda and Panchakarma in California. A clairvoyant and mother of two grown sons, she is a
native of India and has been practicing and teaching transformational work for the last 26 years across the

US. She has also had her own Natural Foods Company, growing organic herbs and creating award winning
natural foods products.
Dr. Yashashree (Yash) Mannur, BAMS
Dr. Yash Mannur is an Ayurvedic Doctor graduating from Poona University in 1996. She also has a degree in
Sanskrit. Yash had topped the class in many Ayurvedic subjects. She is an expert in Panchakarma and had her
own private practice before coming to US. She was instrumental in the success of the former Ayurveda Institute
of America founded by Dr. Jay Apte. Dr. Mannur is very caring and popular among students. She is an expert in
Ayurvedic cooking and offers classes for students and lay people.
Dr. Anjali Paranjpe, BAMS, MD (Ayurveda)
Dr. Anjali Paranjpe a gold medal-winning Ayurvedic Doctor from Poona. She received her BAMS degree in 1984
and MD in Ayurveda in 1987. She also holds a diploma in Yoga. She was a Professor and Dean of the Ayurvedic
College near Poona. She has conducted many workshops in Ayurveda and Yoga in India and the US. She has
offered lectures on All India Radio and TV on Ayurveda and Yoga. Anjali specializes in Swasthavritta and was a
recognized teacher for post graduate students.
Yatrika Shah-Rais, MS, DAS
Dr. Yatrika Shah-Rais is a practitioner of the predictive art of Vedic astrology who has studied under the guidance
of Chakrapani Ullal, Ernst Wilhelm, Robert Koch, and lunar astrology expert Chandra Shankar. She has been a
student and practitioner of Hinduism for a number of years and follows the teachings of her Satguru, the late
Subramuniyaswami, one of the most important teachers of Vedic studies. She is a certified practitioner of
Ayurveda and is also involved in the field of music as a concert presenter and radio host.
Dr. Sunita Tarkunde, BAMS, MD (Ayurveda)
Dr. Sunita Tarkunde is an accomplished Ayurvedic Practitioner, Abhyanga masseuse and Yoga Instructor. She
received her Bachelor’s Degree in Ayurveda from the prestigious Pune University in India and practiced
Ayurveda at Krishna General Hospital and Bhawasar Ayurvedic Hospital in India before immigrating to the U.S. in
1999. She is currently working on her doctorate in Ayurveda and is a staff and faculty member at the former

Dr. Beena Vesikar, BAMS, MD (Ayurveda)
Dr. Beena Vesikar earned her Doctor of Internal Medicine degree, specializing in gastro-intestinal diseases, from
the University of Pune, India in 2000. She also received a BAMS degree from the University of Pune in 1994. In
2007, she completed a certificate course as a Clinical Nutritionist from the Blue Huron Academy in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. Dr. Vesikar has over 10 years of teaching and clinical experience. She specializes in Panchakarma
therapy with an emphasis on Shirodhara. Dr Vesikar has conducted workshops and published numerous articles

Mas Vidal is a director of the Dancing Shiva Yoga and Ayurveda institute in Los Angeles. He studied under the
tutelage of Ayurveda’s pioneer in the west, Dr. David Frawley at the American Institute of Vedic Studies. He was a
competitive athlete and achieved great merits in sports as Mr. Florida at the age of nineteen. Mas was attracted

How much do the programs cost?
The entire tuition for the AWC program is $5000.00 and for the AWP program is $8000.00. There are multiple
payment plans for easy payment that may alter this final total.

Is it legal to practice Ayurveda in all of the states?
A bill has been passed in five states (California, Minnesota, Okalahoma, Idaho, and Rhode Island) to allow the
practice of alternative medicine, which includes Ayurveda. Currently, Iowa and New Mexico are working on passing
the bill. The National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) is working on getting Ayurveda licensed in the United
States.

Does each state regulate the practice of Ayurvedic sciences?

Ayurvedic practitioners are not licensed in the United States, and its practice is not regulated by state or
federal agencies. Standards of competency are set by individual schools that have received state approval.
Ayurvedic practitioners in the United States are taught how to practice legally within a limited scope of
practice so they are not viewed as practicing medicine without a license. We might say that Ayurveda's current
status in the US is analogous to the Chinese medical profession during its early years in the 1970s. While each
state does not regulate the practice of Ayurvedic medicine itself, some aspects of Ayurvedic practice may fall
within the scope of professions that are regulated. Students and graduates of the academy should be careful
not to allow their practice to overlap one of those regulated professions unless they are licensed in that
particular profession. Please contact your local state representative for more information about regulations in
your area.

Can I practice Ayurveda outside of California?

Medical Doctors and other healthcare professionals are recognizing and utilizing the benefits of educational

While many Academy graduates use their Ayurvedic education to enhance preexisting professional careers,

We have a program set-up through Web-Ex which will allow you to take the exams.

We will set-up a separate 3-day weekend where you will be able to come to campus and get necessary hands-on
experience. We also recommend that you attend 3-4 classes on-campus.
10. How will I complete the internship through Distant Learning?
We will set up clinicals in several states for you to complete a week-long internship. You will be able to do the
follow-ups on-line.
11. I’m not a health care professional; Can I still earn a diploma and practice Ayurvedic medicine?
Sure you can. The primary prerequisite for the program is a passion for Ayurveda. KAA welcomes students with a
bachelor’s degree in any field. The minimum admission requirement is a high school diploma with college level

courses in English, Basic Anatomy and Physiology. If you have not taken Anatomy and Physiology before, you can
finish the requirement within six (6) months of your start date.
12. How many of your graduates practice Ayurvedic medicine?
There are different ways students utilize their Ayurvedic education. Many of the students incorporate Ayurvedic
knowledge in their current practice such as Doctors, nurses, massage therapists, etc. Few start a career
manufacturing and selling various Ayurvedic products, while others start a health counseling practice.
Studying Ayurveda is very different than studying mathematics, accounting, or computers. You will learn about life
studying Ayurveda. So your actual studying will happen during the day, when you are interacting with other people.
If you read the text material for an hour to hour and a half every morning (early morning – ideally) you will do well.
What you read in the morning, you will experience during the day. Observing other people and interacting with
them is the way you will learn true Ayurveda.
13. Are there monthly tests? I feel very anxious about taking tests.
You should not feel anxious about tests at all. They are for you (and us) to know what you have learned and what
you didn’t so we can keep you up to speed. We want to make sure our students understand all the Ayurvedic
concepts clearly. Ayurveda is about human health, so a clear understanding is vital.
14. I will be traveling from out of town to attend classes, is there housing assistance available?
There are a few hotels near the campuses where students can book a room for the weekend. In the past, some
students have made good friends with classmates and stayed with them on those weekends.
15. When can I visit the school? Do you have open houses or visitor’s events?
We arrange an open house in July and August of every year. We also allow our prospective students to sit in with
the current class, so that they get a feel of the classroom setting and the topic. With a prior appointment, students
come by and talk to the program coordinator about the details of the program. We are here to assist our students in
any way we can.
16. After I graduate is there career planning and placement? How much can I expect to earn?
KAA posts job openings as they become available on the student services bulletin board. KAA will do its best to
help graduates to get into practice or a related career. Salaries vary greatly.
17. Credentials Within the Field of Ayurveda

Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor (AWC): Level 1 course in Ayurveda, 500 hour course offered by the Kerala
Ayurveda Academy.
•
Ayurvedic Wellness Practitioner (AWP): Level 2 course in Ayurveda, 1000 hour course offered by the Kerala
Ayurveda Academy. Includes two weeks of Intensive Ayurvedic training in India and one week Intensive in the
USA.
•
NAMA Practitioner Membership: Students who complete the Academy’s Level 1 and Level 2 courses can apply
for the National Ayurvedic Medical Association’s Practitioner Membership. NAMA is the most well established
Ayurvedic organization in the US, setting standards for educational training of Ayurvedic Practitioners.

BAMS: Bachelors Degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Science: A 5 ½ year full-time degree program offered
primarily in India. Practitioners completing this program refer to themselves as doctors, though an MD in
Ayurveda is also available in India (below).

Kerala Ayurveda Academy does not recognize any holidays. In fact, we have found that
many of our students prefer to attend classes on holidays. As with any other session, a
student unable to attend a class held on a holiday may make up the missed session by
checking out the appropriate DVD from the Academy’s library.
21. Distance Learning
Students who take our AWC or AWP course via Distance Learning receive the same quality of instruction in a slightly
different format. They receive all course materials and are provided DVDs of the live weekend classes. Our Distance
Learning students complete Quizzes, Exams, a Course Project, and Clinical Internship Hours depending on their program
of enrollment. Students who live at a distance from any of our locations may complete the Clinical Internship that is part
of the AWP program in their home state with a local Ayurvedic Practitioner, or they may fly to the nearest Kerala clinic
location.
22. Quizzes and Exams
Quizzes will be given each weekend of class based upon material taught the previous month, a midterm will be held
after the 6th class, and a comprehensive final examination will be given at the end of the course.
23. Grading
Quizzes account for 25% of the final grade. Midterm and final exams account for 60% of the final grade. Attendance,
homework, Projects, case studies and class participation will account for 15% of the final grade. A passing grade for the
complete course is a “C,” or an overall score of 70%, plus a final examination score of not less than 70%.
24. Retaking Exams & Quizzes
Students may not retake quizzes. Any exam not passed may be retaken one time. The grades are averaged together, and
the average must be above 70%.
25. Clinical Internship—AWP Program Only
The clinical internship (150 hours) helps students make the transition from student to practitioner. This is a special and
important time in the development of the student. During this phase of education, students will be observing patients
under the supervision of a clinical supervisor.
On-Site Internship
Students are welcome to complete their internship near their location. Every student is under the guidance of a clinical
supervisor who supervises individual cases, monitors progress, and assures completion of all required hours and
reporting. Supervisory case discussions may be scheduled in person or by phone at the student’s expense.
Field Internship
Students may also apply to perform their internship by serving in

students who successfully complete the entire program in good academic standing. No student with outstanding
tuition or fees may graduate.

Admissions and Requirements
KAA accepts a limited number of students in each class for better learning (approximately 25 – 30 students).
Prerequisites for the Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor (AWC) Program
High School Diploma with a few college level courses in English, Basic Anatomy and Physiology recommended.
KAA welcomes students with BS degrees in any field or Certified/Licensed Practitioners in a health-related field
including Massage Therapy, Chiropractic, Nursing, Naturopathy and Allopathic Medicine, etc.
Please Note: Basic Anatomy and Physiology are a prerequisite for this program. If students have not already
taken these classes, they will have to do so somewhere else before they finish the first six (6) months of the

California Refund Policy
The registration fee is nonrefundable. 100% of the tuitions will be refunded if the student decides to cancel
his/her enrollment before the end of the first day of the class. There will be no refund if the student decides to
withdraw after 60% of the classes are over.
A written notice from the students, about the cancellation will be required. A telephone call about cancellation
or absenteeism for the classes will not be considered as true cancellation. In such cases, student will not receive
the refund for that period. The refund will be processed within 30 days from the day the Institute receives the
official written notice of cancellation from the student. The refund check will be mailed to the official address of
the student.
In case student decides to withdraw during the program, before the 60% of the classes are over, following will
be the refund calculation:

California Student Tuition Recovery Fund
The Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) was established by the Legislature to protect any California resident
who attends a Private postsecondary Institution from losing money if you prepaid tuition and suffered a financial
loss as a result of the school closing, failing to live up to its enrollment agreement or refusing to pay a court
judgment.
To be eligible for STRF, you must be a “California resident” and reside in California at "the time the enrollment
agreement is signed. Students who are temporan1y residing in California for the sole purpose of pursuing an
education, specifically those who hold student visas, are not considered a California resident.
To qualify for STRF reimbursement you must file a STRF application within one year of receiving notice from the
Council that the school is closed. If you do not receive notice from the Council, you have 4 years from the date of
closure to file a STRF application. If a judgment is obtained you must file a STRF application within two years of
the final judgment.
It is important that you keep copies of the enrollment agreement, financial papers, receipts or any other
information that documents the monies paid to the school.

Attendance Policy
Attendance: Students will be allowed to miss one weekend, and will be responsible for the material taught.
Tardiness: Students are expected to be on time for all class sessions. After second prolonged absenteeism,
student/s will receive a warning. In case of repeated absenteeism without prior notification, those students will
be suspended till the following year.
Conduct
At KAA, the program is directed toward professional training. The students shall obey the law, show respect to
others and observe correct standards of conduct.
Suspension and Dismissal Policy
There are disciplinary guidelines to provide an environment to learn and grow independently, which give
students rights and responsibilities.

At first incidence, warning will be given. At the second incidence the student will be suspended for the following

Leave of Absence
Students can take leave of absence for up to one (1) year with written permission from Dr. Jay Apte, the
Academy Director. She may be contacted at (650) 341-8400 or by mail at 561 Pilgrim Drive, Suite B, Foster City,
CA 94404. The student may resume classes the following year at the level where he/she took leave.
Unless prior arrangements are done with the school about the payment, student is obligated to pay the tuitions

Binding Agreement:
This Enrollment Agreement will be binding only when it has been fully completed, signed, and dated by the
student and an authorized representative of the Academy prior to the time instruction begins.
Changes in the Agreement:
Any changes to this Enrollment Agreement will not be binding on either the student or the Academy unless
such changes are acknowledged in writing by an authorized representative of the Academy and by the student’s
parent or guardian if he/she is a minor.
Discontinued Programs:
If the Academy discontinues instruction in any program after students enter training, including circumstances
where the school changes its location, the Academy must notify each student in writing of such events and must
provide to each student a pro-rata refund of all tuition and fees unless comparable training is arranged for by the
Academy and agreed upon, in writing, by the student. A written request for such a refund must be made within
ninety (90) days from the date the program was discontinued or relocated and the refund must be paid within
thirty (30) days after receipt of such a request.
Termination by the Academy:
A student who fails to maintain satisfactory progress, violates safety regulations, interferes with other students’
work, is disruptive, obscene, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or does not make timely tuition payments,
is subject to immediate termination by the Academy.
Cancellation of Classes:
The Academy reserves the right to cancel a starting class if the number of enrollees is insufficient. Such a
cancellation will be considered a rejection by the school and will entitle students to a full refund of all money
paid.
Effective Date of Acceptance:
I certify that I have read and understand the cancellation and refund policy and the complaint procedure; I have
received a copy of the Academy’s Course Catalog; and I am entitled to an exact copy of the Enrollment
Agreement, Course Catalog, and any other papers I sign. I hereby agree to abide by the conditions set forth
herein.
Notice to the Buyer:
Do not sign this Agreement before you read it or if it contains any blank spaces. This is a legal instrument. All
pages of the contract are binding. Read both sides of all pages before signing.
You are entitled to an exact copy of the Agreement, school catalog and any other papers you sign and are
required to sign a statement acknowledging receipt of those.

If you have not started training, you may cancel this contract by providing written notice of cancellation to the
school at its address shown on the contract. The notice must be postmarked not later than midnight of the fifth
business day (excluding Sundays and holidays) following your signing this contract or the written notice may be
personally or otherwise delivered to the school within that time. In event of dispute over timely notice, the
burden to prove service rests on the applicant.
It is an unfair business practice for the school to sell, discount, or otherwise transfer this contract or promissory
note without the signed written consent of the student or his/her financial sponsors and a written statement
notifying all parties that the cancellation and refund policy continues to apply.
THE TOTAL AMOUNT FOR ALL FEES, CHARGES, AND SERVICES, THE STUDENT IS OBLIGATED
TO PAY FOR THE COURSE IS $5118.00, DEPENDING ON THEIR PAYMENT AGREEMENT.

and that Institution’s cancellation and refund policies have been clearly explained to me.
I understand and agree that KAA does not guarantee employment or take responsibility for employment or a
career in the field of Ayurveda, or any other health related field, upon completion of the course. I also
