Being an NQT
• How are you going to develop your
strengths?
• How are you going to work on your areas
for development?
• What do you want to be thinking, doing,
seeing by the end of my NQT year?
Think with the end in mind….
Where do you want to be in a year?
( Start with final column- as it is not a
deficit model)
Where am I now?

The best job in the world
The NQT year is about developing
your reflective skills and moving
yourself on…..
Reflective learning cycle
This is your experience
of teaching
Concrete experience
Using the answers
arrived at you plan
alternative strategies
to gain progress
Plan active
experimentation
Here you ask questions
about your evaluation.
You seek reasons for
success and failure
Reflect on experience
Abstract
conceptualisation
Here you evaluate
your experience to
identify what was
effective and what
ineffective

The KOLB reflection cycle
Try to think about an event / issue in the first
two weeks of term
Use the KOLB CYCLE to analyse and reflect
on the event
Discuss with a partner
How the NQT programme will help you…
The NQT programme is designed to develop
your reflective skills and enable you to put
into action your learning.
Each theme is made up of several parts.
7
26/09/2013
The first session for a theme you learn
about the theme
You plan how you are going to put this
Into action back in school- observation,
discussion, practice……
You then reflect before returning to session 2
Session 2 everyone shares their learning in
Triads
Reflect and record learning from the NQT group
Research shows that there is no personality
type that makes a good teacher.
Whether you are a shy introvert or an
enthusiastic extrovert you can teach
effectively......
......but only if you know how
to learn from your mistakes
and successes.

NQTs working with the standards
Statutory induction is the bridge between
initial teacher training and a career in
teaching. It combines
• a personalised programme of development,
support and professional dialogues
• with monitoring and an assessment of
performance against the relevant
standards.
NQTs working with the standards
The STANDARDS
The Teacher’s Standards will be used to assess
an NQT’s performance at the END of their
induction period.
The decision about whether an NQT ’ s
performance against the relevant standards is
satisfactory upon completion of induction
should take into account;
10
26/09/2013
NQTs
• The NQTs work context
• Made on the basis of what can be
reasonably expected of an NQT by the
end of induction.
NQTs: Statutory
Judgements should reflect the expectation
that NQTS
• Have effectively consolidated their ITT
• Demonstrated their ability to meet the
relevant standards consistently over a
sustained period
