Course Description Large Muscle Exercise (LME) Program. The Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College, in coordination with the Ohio Juvenile Detention Services Association, is pleased to provide this free one and onehalf day course for front line staff in Ohio’s 39 juvenile detention centers. Each child must receive an hour of Large Muscle Exercise daily to meet Department of Youth Services standards. Youth often do not want to participate in these programs because they receive no school credit and the same routine dayafter-day becomes boring and stale. This session will showcase a dynamic program of movement and stretching, developed by the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center, that the youth not only enjoy but for which they also receive school gym credit. Sessions will focus on a variety of relevant topics critical for the professional officer. Session will include the following: Trauma Focused Services in Detention A high number of youth who come into contact with the Juvenile Justice system have long histories of traumatic experiences. This session will provide knowledge about evidence-informed skills and practice in using these skills for working with this population in a corrections setting. Verbal De-escalation Skills for the Juvenile Detention Officer Although conflict is inevitable in juvenile correctional facilities, it is critical to manage this conflict in a way that maintains professionalism, encourages non-violent resolution, and allows all those involved to increase the likelihood of positive outcomes in the future. This session is designed to help develop the skills necessary to resolve conflicts before they escalate into explosive situations. Understanding the Dynamics of Bullying and Youth Bullying is a part of life for most youth. Understanding the types of bullying and its impact will help officers to be able to respond better to youth either as victims or perpetrators of bullying. These skills will help to create and maintain safer environments in detention centers. 2010 Court Personnel Education & Training Committee Bruce Bishilany, Chief Official Court Reporter Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, Cleveland Ohio Juvenile Detention Staff Conference Sarah Brown-Clark, Clerk of Court Youngstown Municipal Court David Edelblute, Court Administrator For Juvenile Detention Officers Licking County Probate-Juvenile Court, Newark Shawn Davis, Bailiff Scioto County Common Pleas Court, Portsmouth Anne Gatti, Pretrial Diversion Director Oriana House/Summit County Courts, Akron LeTreese M.
