CNAQ programme gets Canadian accreditation TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA THE pharmacy technician programme of College of the North Atlantic-Qatar’s (CNAQ) School of Health Sciences has received international accreditation from the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP). Addressing a function to mark the achievement on Wednesday, Christine Bolan, dean of health sciences, said: “We are thrilled with this honour. We have achieved this recognition due to hard work and commitment. I am happy that our request to the CCAPP to grant international accreditation has been accepted.” The accreditation process included a self-study report which outlined the programme, the facilities, faculty and industry support and was followed by an on-site visit by a team from CCAPP. Thereafter, the team submitted a favourable report. “We were told that our pharmacy technician course can be rated among the best programmes in Canada. We are still relatively young in Qatar and that feedback was great to hear. It speaks to the overall quality of our initiative,” Bolan said. The three-year provisional accreditation, which is the highest level granted, means that graduates will be able to write the Canadian national registration examinations which will recognise them professionally in their field. The accreditation will also make it easier for graduates who wish to continue their studies at a university level. QNA DOHA Judges of the Qatar Financial Centre civil and commercial court at a hearing, in Doha, recently. QFC court hears its first appeal cases TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA THE Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) civil and commercial court appellate circuit heard its first permission to appeal cases recently. The cases were heard in front of Lord Woolf, the court’s president and former Chief Justice of England and Wales and two other senior Judges, Lord Scott and David Keene. Two permissions to appeal applications were brought to the court against Al Mal Bank, which has been in liquidation since June 2010. They were filed by the former chief executive officer of the bank, Nazim Omara and former head of human resources at the bank, Taha Babiker. Omara sought permission to appeal the court at First Instance’s order in October 2010 to dismiss his claim for It also dismissed an application by Babiker for permission to appeal against a judgment of the Court at First Instance in December 2010. It said that it was impossible for Babiker to succeed in his case of wrongful dismissal. unfair dismissal. Omara and his advocates did not attend the hearing. The liquidators for the bank argued that Omara had fraudulently created, after the date of his dismissal from the bank, the contracts on which he and Babiker relied in the proceedings. The court dismissed Omara’s permission application for lack of merit, saying it could not succeed on appeal. It also dismissed an application by Babiker for permission to appeal against a judgment of the Court at First Instance in December 2010. It said that it was impossible for Babiker to succeed in his case of wrongful dismissal. While the Court at First Instance concluded that Babiker’s contract was terminated in November 2009, his evidence did not assist him because the court found that the contract was invalid having been executed by Omara without authority. Lawyers of Babiker questioned the lawfulness of the requirement for litigants to apply to the court for permis- sion to appeal as opposed to having an automatic right of appeal, according to the court’s rules and regulations which were issued and binding from December 15, 2010. The court said that the requirement falls within the language and spirit of Law No 7 of 2005 (as amended by Law No 2 of 2009), and is justified in contemporary litigation as contributing to the efficient economic and resolution of litigation, limiting any additional expense where an appeal is without merit and has no real prospect of succeeding. This was the first time the new court facilities had been used in QFC Court proceedings. The cases were presented in Arabic and English with assistance from a simultaneous translation facility. THE Supreme Council of Health (SCH) will take part in the World Vaccination Week from April 24 to 30 under the slogan ‘Partnership for vaccination’. The SCH will celebrate the event in cooperation with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Healthcare, the Supreme Council of Education (SEC) and Qatar Petroleum (QP). The event seeks to raise awareness among the public about the importance of vaccination. The WHO has requested all member countries, including Qatar, to keep track of their immunisation process. The programme will feature workshops and lectures on the importance of vaccination. Some booths will be set up at commercial centres to raise awareness among the public about vaccination. The vaccination week aims at improving the dissemination of information about the importance of immunisation and enhancing community demand for it. It also aims at renewing the commitment of policymakers to support the vaccination services by all available health systems, besides encouraging all categories of the community to immunise their children. Immunisation is one of the most successful and effective interventions which have contributed to reducing the rates of diseases. It also represents an adequate protection against serious diseases for all ages. As for adults, immunisation is an effective protection against life threatening diseases like influenza, meningitis and cervical cancer. More than 100 countries will participate in the event with a view to contribute to the reduction of morbidity and mortality rates through vaccination and avoid diseases threatening human life. Some of the environmental problems that we are facing today would have been solved a long time ago. It’s nice to get together so that we can share ideas and come up with solutions to some of the pressing environment issues.” Ben Brea, a student at Dover-Sherborn High School said, “The international environment seminar is an eyeopener for me. We were informed on issues related to global warming.” Ronald Geronimo of Charlestown High School said, “We all belong to planet earth and it is our responsibility to protect it. Meanwhile, all the 550 Middle School students of the American School of Doha participated in weeklong activities to mark the Earth Day. The main event was organised by the MS Conservation Club in which the students planted 30 trees in the school. The programme provided the students an opportunity to plant and get first-hand experience of using a shovel. In an effort to ‘green’ the school campus, groups of 15 students planted trees using fertiliser, peat moss and water. They adopted their tree by naming it and making a plaque to place it in front of their plantation. The group selected droughtresistant trees because they don’t use much water and they are native species to the Middle East. Albizia and Neem were chosen because of their beauty and medicinal uses. The 30 trees were donated by the Ministry of Urban Development and Agriculture. Students of American School of Doha at a tree plantation event, in Doha, on Wednesday. The duo, Chanka Buddika and Richard Zeber, from Qatar narrowly missed the first spot to The Address Downtown Dubai which won the regional competition. “We are disappointed that we were so close to winning, but we are satisfied. We worked as hard as we could and put out some great pastries that impressed the judges,” Buddika said. His team mate Zeber agreed. “Of course we would have liked to win. But being awarded third place in such a tough regional competition with so many talented chefs is a real achievement,” Zeber said. The judges said that the winning team, Dedy Supriady and Farid’s natural flair for pastry and innovative flavour set them apart from the rest of the contestants in the competition, which was hosted by Fonterra between April 6 and 14. The talented pair was competing against 13 teams comprising best culinary talent in the region, and both chefs were overwhelmed with their achievement. Dedy, who won the Anchor MasterChef Challenge back in February with his colleague Daniel Edward, was particularly delighted with the team’s victory. “We have both been putting in extra hours back at the hotel’s kitchen to perfect our recipes but as I found out last time, it was so stressful to create them together in the final moments of the competition. Chefs are by nature competitive and I think the standard of dishes produced by the other teams spurred Farid and myself on and gave us an added motivation,” Supriady said. Farid said, “Although competing with the best in the industry is tough. I believe such events help us to keep us on our toes so that we keep pushing the boundaries. It’s great to have the opportunity to participate in an event where the other competitors regard it with the same respect and importance.” The dishes were judged by a panel of independent and accredited chefs, adhering to the World Association of Chefs Societies’ (WACS) recommended standards. The Address Downtown Dubai team got an impressive score of 92 out of 100. The competition took place in Fonterra’s Culinarium in Dubai, the UAE.
