HOW TO USE SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY
(An extract from EIAJ articles)
Switching power supply has excellent performance characteristics, featuring compact-size, lightweight and high efficiency.
Please use the switching power supply unit correctly in order to improve the reliability of your electric equipment.
Switching power supplies being used worldwide have been and
are produced in various kinds and types for both AC and D.C.
operation. Before using the switching power supply, please
confirm local voltage, AC or DC, the allowable voltage range, the
input-selection method, etc. RUBYCON resonant power supply
permits 85 to 264VAC as the input voltage range and 47 to 63Hz
as frequency. Input power other than the specified power may
damage the power supply.
The power supply sometimes may not work normally due to the
distortion of input voltage even though the input voltage is within
the specified range.
INPUT CURRENT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Switching power supplies with few exceptions directly rectifies AC
input. In this case, the most rectifying method is the capacitorinput method, and reactive current runs through a smoothing
capacitor. Therefore, input current is decided by output power,
input voltage, power factor, and efficiency.
In the switching power supply, power factor is generally about 0.4
to 0.6. However, Rubycon resonant power supply has PFC (Power
Factor Collection circuit) so the power factor is about 1,
consequently the large input current is reduced in comparison to
Rubycon Resonant Power Supply - with PFC,
The Other Switching Power Supply - without PFC
Input Rectifying Smoothing Circuit
many other switching power supplies.
INRUSH CURRENT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In the switching power supply, when turned on it, peak current
flows
through to charge the input smoothing capacitor. This current is
called "inrush current". Though the value of inrush current varies
depending on the timing of input and the inrush current prevention
circuit, etc., it reaches up the equivalent of 10 - 20 times as much as
the input current in normal state. When some sets of the switching
power supplies are used together, inrush current is increased.
It suggests careful consideration must be given to select line, fuse,
switch, etc.
INPUT FUSE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If the input fuse is open, the switching power supply may have
been damaged. Do not replace the fuse, Please return the power
supply unit to your local RUBYCON sales office or distributor.
Even the high efficiency switching power supply can not function well if the mounting, wiring and connection are not done in the
method direct. Please use it observing directions as follows:
MOUNTING METHOD -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(1) Radiation
(2) Output Derating
a. To take account of ventilation.
Output power depends on the operating temperature.
b. To observe the mounting direction.
The following derating curve is for reference.
c. To take account of heat conduction.
d. To keep required space (ℓ≥60mm) between power supply
units when using some power supply units close together.
e. It is desirable to have the forced air-cooling.
(3) Mounting Screw
When mounting the power supply to the set, be sure to check
the length of a screw (≤50mm) and the clamping torque
(16 kgf•cm [1.56 N•m]) taking into consideration
insulation and clamping strength.
MOUNTING METHOD -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(1) Wiring to Input and Output
a. Please ensure input wiring and the output wiring
(2) Grounding Connection
For safety and noise prevention, connection between

connection.
b. It is suggested that the output wiring is "HEAVY & SHORT"
in consideration of the output current.
(3) Wiring for Remote ON/OFF Control and Remote Sensing
(4) Correct Terminal Connection
When wiring to the switching power supply, it is
suggested to select the terminal screw of suitable
diameter, compressed terminal, lead and tools.
In general, the switching power supply is the DC regulated power supply of special structure for installing in host equipment.
Please use it only for this purpose.
INPUT VOLTAGE RANGE ------------------------------The permitted input voltage range of Rubycon power supply is 85
to 264VAC at 47 to 63Hz frequency. To avoid power supply
damage, do not use on supplies outside these ranges.
Please do not exceed input voltage of 264VAC as this will
damage the power supply and host equipment. Please do not use
on input voltage below 85VAC as this may damage the power
supply and may affect the operation of the host equipment.
LEAKAGE CURRENT --------------------------------------The internal noise filter of the switching power supply keeps
leakage current within the range required by the safety standards
of each country. When using multiple units, The current is
increased. Therefore, please take great care to prevent electric
shock hazard by means of grounding, etc.
WIRING MATERIAL -----------------------------------------To prevent overheating and burning of the leads at abnormal load,
use appropriately sized leads good for the output current capacity
of the switching power supply. This is particulary important, in the
case of distributing of current to multiple loads, special caution is
required. When using a thin wire as the branch line, the
overcurrent protection (OCP) of the power supply may not work
sometimes even in short-circuit. Accordingly, it is necessary to
take measures against such a trouble by inserting a fuse into the
wiring. Also bear in mind the rated voltage of the electric wire is to
be used.
REQUEST:
For the built-in type switching power supply, the safety standards of each country are set up according to the end use
product.
Before using the power supply, please confirm the safety standards referring to the data of Rubycon.
Rubycon switching power supplies are designed to meet EMI requirements. However, sometimes it may not function correctly
depending on the wiring to the AC power source and the load, grounding, etc.
When using the switching power supply, refer to following.
