How to Talk
with Your Kids
about School
by Louise Ridout
The experts say that the best way to help your child succeed in school is to talk, talk, talk. And, I would add – listen,
listen, listen to them Many parents ask:
“How was school today?”
“Fine”
“What did you do at school today?”
“Nothing”
Big help that was! Try some questions that will require a
more detailed answer, like these ones instead:
“What are you looking forward to in school this year?”
“What kinds of activities did you do at school today?”
“What cool things did you discover today?”
“Who are your friends at school?” “What do you and your
friends do together?”
their life with you.
For over a century,
The City of Calgary Cemeteries
has supported Calgarians
with care and compassion.
If your child is excited, happy and enthusiastic, then notice it, comment on it and be happy with them! Even if all
they like about school is being with their friends, be happy
about that for them.
Queen’s Park Cemetery and Mausoleum
offers burial space, cremation interment,
and entombment options in peaceful,
natural, park-like surroundings.
If there are any hesitations in their answers to you, explore
what is going on for them. Perhaps they are being bullied.
Perhaps they do not understand their teacher and are feeling lost in their schoolwork. They might be afraid to tell
you their challenges or simply what they don’t like about
school. Be prepared to listen to what is going on and their
feelings about it in a nonjudgmental way. If things are not
going well at school, work with your child to find a means
to improve their school experience.

Honouring
It’s important that you are prepared to devote your attention to your child and engage with their responses. We
want the chance to engage, share and learn from each
other. Pay true attention to what they are saying, make eye
contact and show them your interest. We cannot do that
if our mind is on the millions of other things we have to do.
calgary.ca | contact 311
So listen, listen, listen to your child, and then you will be
able to talk with them. Your relationship will be enhanced
and they will have a happier and more successful school
year as well!

carnival, swim, skate and celebrities – and where everything is FREE? Come to Trico Centre, Saturday, September 7 from 12 to 4pm for our 30th Anniversary Event.
For 30 years, Trico Centre (formerly the Family Leisure

overcome the effects of poverty, conflict, and disease in
disadvantaged communities around the world. Erin will
speak at the 30th Anniversary Event’s opening ceremonies and will be available throughout the event to meet
members of the public.
Graffiti Vandalism Affects
Communities
A message from the Federation of Calgary
Communities
Building Safe Communities Program
Graffiti vandalism is figures, letters, drawings or stickers applied, scribbled, scratched, etched, sprayed or attached on or to
the surface of any premises, structure, or other property. It can
be done by a variety of methods including spray paint, markers, etching and pens to name a few. Graffiti done without the
owner’s permission is vandalism and is a crime carrying serious
consequences. Most graffiti vandalism IS not gang related, but
if graffiti vandalism is left unchecked, other criminal activities
may begin to start in the area as the perception of the community is that no one cares or is taking care of the area. Graffiti
vandalism needs to be reported to 311. If graffiti vandalism
is not removed quickly, this inaction may be interpreted as a
sign of low neighborhood pride, and graffiti vandalism will
spread to other buildings, streets and properties.
The celebration also features a children’s carnival with
two huge bouncy castles, free drop-in swim, free public
skate, and free fitness centre admission. David Spence
and Todd Gallant will be emceeing the event. A special feature will be Shave Your Lid for a Kid Community
Shave to raise money for Kids Cancer Care – to shave or
donate see www.kidscancercare.ab.ca.
What to do:
•Record the graffiti vandalism by taking a photograph (if
possible) of the damage
•Note the location
•Report the graffiti by calling 311
•Remove the graffiti if it is on your property or with permission of the property owner. The longer it is left for viewing
the more likely other graffiti will appear in the area.
Also at the event: Calgary Police Services, EMS, Calgary
Fire Department, and the Man Van (prostate cancer
testing).
Please visit www.graffitifreecalgary.ca for more information
on graffiti vandalism and how you can make a difference in
your community to address graffiti vandalism.
Entry is free but we encourage donations to the Food
Bank. We’d love to see you!
Special thanks to the Calgary Police Service Graffiti Coordinator
Constable Dave Ladic for this article.

Fish Creek Skills Park
In partnership with Alberta Parks and the Friends of
Fish Creek, the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance will be
developing the official Fish Creek Mountain Bike Skills
Park over the next few years. By providing a progressive
area designed for beginners to advance riders, we accomplish several important objectives:
1. Reducing the construction of unauthorized obstacles
in the park, especially in areas like Mallard Point.
2. Providing a new family-friendly recreational area
within Fish Creek Park.
3. Engaging local families and youth in the design,
building and ongoing maintenance of the area.
4. Increasing public safety in Fish Creek for cyclists, pedestrians and all other park users.
The 4 main areas that will be built:
1. Pump Track: An area of turns, bumps, rocks and other
challenges for children and beginners to practice basic
riding skills. This area is planned to be completed this
summer for a September opening.
2. Skills area (2014): This area will have larger rocks, logs
and obstacles to practice and perfect beginner / intermediate riding skills.
3. Intermediate: An area that will include progressive
jumps and tracks designer for more experience riders
4. Advanced (2015): This area will contain larger tracks
and progressive jumps to challenge advanced riders
This will be the first facility of its kind in Calgary and will
add to the infrastructure in

The Courtship
Dance
by Cheryl Bowman / Photo by Melanie Seneviratne
Last year, the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society received an orphaned Western Grebe chick into their care.
This adorable chick grew into a beautiful bird that is recognized by their striking red eyes and impressive courtship ritual.
The Western Grebe breeds on freshwater lakes and
marshes that are home to extensive open water. They
often nest in colonies with hundreds or even thousands
of individuals. Here they spend most of the time on the
water as they are very awkward on land. In the fall they
migrate south to saltwater and sheltered sea coasts.
The courtship ritual of the bird pair includes ‘rushing’.
This occurs when two birds turn to one side, lunge forward with their bodies completely out of the water racing side by side in synchrony across the lake.
The female will lay 3-4 eggs that are a pale blush color.
The chicks and eggs are most vulnerable to avian predation, accounting for 40% of nest loss. The main predators
are American Coots and California Gulls. The incubation
period of 24 days results in a hatchling that is alert and
covered with a blackish/silvery down. Once hatched,
they leave the nest to ride on the back of either parent.
There the parents feed and protect them. Interestingly,
the hatchlings never return to the nest.
These elegant black and white birds are the largest of
the Grebe family and have a lifespan of around 15 years.
Characteristics include a black back and face with a
white neck and underside. They have a long neck, a thin
bill and a most striking feature; their brilliant red eyes.
It is estimated that there are approximately 80,000 Western Grebes in North America. The species are not considered threatened, however there is concern for their
status on the edges of their range, including British Columbia, Canada. The species are sensitive to pesticides,
poor water quality, fishing line and gill nets. The parents
are also easily frightened by boating disturbances and
may not return to the nest for hours.
To help reduce the orphans often seen by The Calgary
Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre it is best to observe these
wonderful birds from a distance.

Is Tea
Healthier
Than Coffee?
There are numerous studies showing the health benefits of drinking tea. The list of diseases and conditions that tea is believed to assist or prevent seemingly grows longer by the minute. On the other hand,
coffee has been vilified for a number of years, in
particular the caffeine it contains. But recently, new
studies have shown that coffee is actually protective
against some diseases and may be good for you in
moderate amounts. So what is a person to think? If
you have to choose between tea and coffee, which is
the healthier choice?
Tea is rich in catechins, which are antioxidant polyphenols. These have been shown to reduce the action
of free radicals in the body that cause damage to our
cells. Tea is one of the highest sources of this type of
antioxidant in the Western diet. Both black and green
tea have been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, and green has the added benefit of reducing
cancers such as that of the breast and ovary. Green
tea has three times the catechins of black tea.
Coffee, on the other hand, reduces your likelihood of
contracting type 2 diabetes, which is one of the most
prevalent chronic diseases in the country. Studies
have shown that drinking at least three cups of coffee a day can reduce inflammation in the body, lower
glucose levels in the blood and improve the body’s
use of insulin. This is the case with either caffeinated
or decaffeinated coffee, so caffeine is not the active
ingredient that leads to these health benefits. It is the
antioxidant chlorogenic acid that is thought to be the
beneficial compound in coffee.
18
Both tea and coffee contain caffeine, with approximately 180 mg in an 8-ounce cup of coffee, 43 mg in the
same amount of black tea, and 30 mg in green tea. If you
are sensitive to caffeine, then you might want to stick to
tea (or limit yourself to one small cup of coffee per day).
High intake of caffeine can also deplete the calcium
from your bones, and should be avoided by pregnant
women due to an increased risk of miscarriage.
So if both tea and coffee are good for you, drinking a
little of each every day might seem like a good solution
if you want to achieve the greatest health benefits from
a warm beverage. Just try to skip the sugar, as the sugar
added to either coffee or tea can largely negate the benefits. Excess consumption of sugar is one of the leading
causes of diabetes, and scientific research has found it
to be a contributing factor to cancer and heart disease.
Whether you choose coffee or tea, by drinking each in
moderation remains the best approach to your overall
health.

Fostering safe
communities…
Responsible pet owners contribute to healthy and safe
communities by preventing their cat or dog from becoming a nuisance.
The first step to contributing to safer pets and communities
is to license your cat or dog.
•The licence tag lets people know that the cat or dog they
have found has an owner.
•Licensing helps to protect your pet by providing Animal
& Bylaw Services with the information required to reunite
you with your pet if he gets lost.
•With a licence, pets who get lost can be returned home
sooner, limiting the potential nuisance to community
members.
•Licensing fees pay for all of our Animal Services operations
which includes officers driving lost pets straight home.
•The fees also allow us to shelter, feed and protect other
lost cats and dogs in our facility, keeping both the animals
and citizens safe.
For information on more advantages of licensing, visit calgary.ca and search “Licensing a cat or dog.”

•Remember: children learn by observing. By teaching
them safe crossing habits as early as possible you can
reduce the chance your child may be involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision
Alberta Health Services EMS
Back to School Safety
Alberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and students about some basic road safety tips, as
streets become more congested, with the return of the
school year. Both, pedestrians and motorists have an
important role to play - road safety is a shared responsibility.
Motorists
•Avoid talking on cell phones, texting, or any other behavior that diverts your attention away from driving.
•Give right of way to pedestrians who have activated
overhead crossing lights or who are waiting to cross
from a street corner.
•Remember, it is illegal to pass vehicles - other than
those that are parked - in school zones or playground
zones, during posted hours.
Around school buses
•Flashing amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to
stop. Motorists should do likewise.
•No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP,
when approaching a school bus with activated flashing red lights - unless the bus is on the opposite side
of a divided highway from you.
•Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert
and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are
contributing to school bus safety.
Pedestrians
•Cross only at marked crosswalks or street corners that
have clear visibility from all directions.
•Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the
street.
•When activating overhead crossing lights, pause before stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both
directions have come to a complete stop.
•Stay within the crosswalk lines until fully clear of the
road way.
•Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the
street only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when
all cars have come to a complete stop.
•If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s
hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing.

Reliability and Power
Outages
Why do power outages occur?
There are two different types of power outages: planned
and unplanned. Customers are notified in advance of
planned power outages that allow us to schedule maintenance and repairs.
However, most of the power outages that occur in Calgary are unplanned and are often caused by severe
weather – lightning, high winds, freezing rain, extreme
heat, and snow. Other factors that may trigger an unplanned outage include equipment failure, vehicle accidents, animals, digging that damages underground
cables, and tree growth.
How can you prepare for a power outage?
There are a few ways you and your family can stay prepared in the event of an unplanned power outage.
One way is keeping a kit handy that includes a flashlight, batteries, a battery operated radio, matches, and
candles.
Some other things to keep in mind include having access to a mobile device, and plugging your electronics
into a surge protector to help protect against potential
damage caused by power surges.
What should you do in the event of a power outage?
•To report a power outage or other electrical trouble
in Calgary, call the ENMAX Power Trouble Line at 403514-6100.
•Call 9-1-1 for emergency or life threatening situations.
•Turn off appliances or electronic equipment (e.g.
stoves) to avoid hazards when the power comes back
on. •Keep one light switched on so you know when power
is restored.
•Keep warm with layered clothes and blankets.
•Listen to a battery-powered radio or check your mobile device for information.
•Keep your freezer and refrigerator doors closed so
food will stay cool for many hours.

Canadian Symbols that represent Canada officially,
and unofficially, include:
The Maple Leaf Tartan was made an official symbol of
Canada on March 9, 2011. The tartan was designed by
David Weiser in 1964, and the pattern incorporates the
colours of the maple leaf through the changing seasons:
green leaves of summer, gold colours in the fall, red
which appears with the first frost, and the brown tones
of fallen leaves.
Red and White are the official colours of Canada, as
a result of the proclamation of the arms of Canada by
King George V in 1921.
The National Flag of Canada was the culmination of
many years of discussions, thousands of designs, and
much debate in Parliament. On February 15, 1965, the
national flag of Canada was raised for the first time
over Parliament Hill.
The Great Seal of Canada is used on all documents
relating to state proclamations, and commissions of
cabinet ministers, as well as government officials. Made
of tempered steel, it weighs 3.75 kg and is 12.7 cm in
diameter.
The Canoe, now used mainly for recreation, was a major form of transportation for the fur traders and early
Canadian explorers.
The Moose is found across the country in forested areas, especially near lakes. The moose is the largest
member of the deer family; a mature bull stands as tall
as a horse, and weighs over 600 kg/1300 lbs.
The Canada Goose is a wild goose belonging to the
genus Branta, which is native to arctic and temperate
regions of North America. A black head and neck with
white “chinstrap” and a brownish-grey body are its distinguishing features.

A most
important part
of your pet’s
year
Often as clients stand on the opposite side of the table
from me and I examine their pets, they think we are just
shooting the breeze as I run my hands over their pet.
But for over 25 years I have tried to do a thorough examination of every pet every time from nose to tail and
the conversation we are having yields much of the pet’s
history I need. I am limited occasionally by crotchety or
frightened pets that refuse to be handled.
Most owners have heard the cliché “one year equals seven” in dog years. This is a simplification, but it is true that
in essence an annual examination for your pet is equal
to your going several years without a doctor’s examination. I routinely detect tumors, heart disease, kidney
disease, skin infections, bladder stones, ear infections,
dental disease, and external parasites. These are only
the common diseases.
During an examination I use my senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to detect disease. Sometimes I
am only alerted by an unexplained weight loss from
the previous year. The Canadian Veterinary Medical
Association and every other professional veterinary association recommends a minimum of one veterinary
examination per year for your pet. That is the healthy
pet. A pet with a chronic disease may require far more
frequent check-ups.
A complete examination includes a history of life style,
life stage, behaviour, and diet. What does your pet do?
Is it a working animal and at what life stage? Are there
other pets in the household? Where does the pet travel?
The physical examination includes a dental assessment,
pain assessment, and body and muscle condition scor-
ing. Chronic conditions are assessed. If the pet has soft
tissue masses being monitored they should be measured. I have taken photographs if I can’t adequately
describe something.
Following this, a plan for each pet will be outlined by
your veterinarian based on history and examination
results. This plan could include parasitic testing, radiographs, genetic screening, and blood and urine tests.
Parasite control is dependent on life style; where your
pet has been and is going. Immunizations or vaccinations according to existing guidelines will be administered, counseling given on spaying or neutering if
appropriate, and other preventative or protective recommendations may be made. Recommendations for
dental care, behaviour counseling, and diet may be
made.
The examination should conclude with a plan for follow-up. This may seem like a lot in the brief time you
are in the examination room but most veterinarians
start this process from the minute they lay eyes on your
pet as they enter the room. Never minimize the value of
this visit, I can’t tell you how many pets have had their
lives saved or prolonged by findings during that visit
prompted by “getting the pet’s shots” once a year.
At the end of all this I believe the education of the client
so the care of the pet is a partnership between the veterinarian and pet owner is critical. The “why” of the entire process above needs to be answered to each owner
so they understand what to look for the rest of the year
with their pet and seek help as needed.

Schools
Work continues on schools in our constituency. Earlier
this year, the following new schools were announced:
•Copperfield public K-4
•New Brighton public K-4
•Auburn Bay Catholic K-9
All three schools are anticipated to be completed in
2016.
Please note that we continue to listen to our constituents and local groups and will work towards building
more schools in Calgary-South East to meet the needs
of our fast growing communities.
High River
On June 5th, 2013, I was honoured to be sworn in as Associate Minister Responsible for Regional Recovery and
Reconstruction in High River. I have been working hard
to help the people of High River and will continue to

Communities get ready for Alberta Culture Days
Sixty-six community organizations across the province
will receive financial support from the Alberta government and serve as official 2013 Alberta Culture Days celebration sites from September 27-29.
For three wild and creative days, communities, businesses, non-profits and voluntary organizations, governments and individuals will come together to create
activities and events that celebrate Alberta’s vibrant arts
scene, heritage, community spirit and cultural diversity.
With $375,000 in Government of Alberta assistance,
these celebration sites will build community partnerships and increase access to cultural experiences for
Alberta families.
Organizations receiving support partner with others
in their community to present free, family-friendly
activities throughout the Alberta Culture Days weekend. From festivals and art shows to backstage tours
and culinary samplings, there is something for everyone during Alberta Culture Days. Funding is provided
to help plan and coordinate events at two levels: up
to $5,000 for 61 host celebration sites, which present
two days of programming; and up to $20,000 for five
feature celebration sites, which offer three days of programming and stage a main event.
Albertans are encouraged to share in the experience of
Alberta Culture Days by joining in, volunteering for, or
planning an event that showcases their community’s
unique talents, pride and passions.
AlbertaCultureDays.ca features a number of event planning resources and customizable promotional tools for
those communities that did not receive a grant this year
or are still developing their plans. In addition, the Alberta Culture Calendar is a free and easy way to find or
promote cultural events, activities and opportunities in
your community during Culture Days and throughout
the year.
Culture Days is a national, volunteer-driven, grassroots
movement led by partners in the culture sector in collaboration with public and private organizations. In 2012,
Alberta communities hosted more than 1,200 events. A
full listing of the 66 groups and communities receiving a
2013 Celebration Site Grant can be found at AlbertaCultureDays.ca.
In the Constituency
This summer I was able to attend the Mahogany Beach
and BBQ Blaster Party and a Chaparral Community
Block Party event where I had a great time meeting and
speaking to residents of all ages.
I continue visiting the Walden Heights Seniors Community once a month for Friday tea. I really enjoy getting
to know the residents and helping answer any of their
questions or concerns.
Meeting with and listening to constituents and community groups is one of the most important parts of my job
as your MLA. If you are holding an event and would like
me to attend, please contact my office. I look forward to
hearing from you!

Earlier this year, the City of Calgary embarked on a twoweek public consultation on how to spend the $52 million
in tax room vacated by the provincial government. People
were presented with five options—transit, neighbourhood
revitalization, pay down the debt, lower business taxes,
or refund the money. As an advocate of the Southeast
LRT and SETWAY, I was naturally in favour of using the tax
room for transit projects; however, citizen feedback overwhelmingly showed Calgarians preferred Council to ‘give it
back’. If done, this would have returned the $52 million of
absorbed tax room to Calgary homeowners in the form of
a property tax break of approximately $126 per year for a
home based on the median value in Calgary of $410,000.
In the weeks following the 2013 Alberta Flood, Mayor Nenshi made known his intentions to use the tax room collected in 2013 combined with another $52 million in 2014
toward flood rebuilding costs. We all have to be cognizant
of the devastation caused by the flood. My heart goes out
to all affected by the flooding across Calgary and Southern
Alberta, and I was very humbled at the willingness, selflessness, and efficacy in which Calgarians came together to
support one another.
However, Nenshi’s Notice of Motion would have committed $104 million without knowing what insurers and other
levels of governments intend to cover. In addition to this,
the City of Calgary maintains a $295 million reserve fund
to cover the costs of such disasters as the flood. I was concerned about the absence of an acceptable process and
procedure on how council wanted to use the $52 million
given myself and other Councillors were committed to the
results of the consultation process. For those reasons, on
July 28, 2013, I voted for the much-discussed ‘give it back’
option, but, the motion was defeated 9-5 in City Council.
I proposed an amendment to Mayor Nenshi’s Notice of Motion to limit Council to the tax room already collected for
2013, and until we know which piece of the pie the city is
responsible for, Council cannot ear-mark more provincial
tax room toward the flood recovery. This allows the future
fate of the 2014 tax room and beyond to remain open during the budget deliberations in November. It also gives City
Administration time to prepare a report on how much the
flood will cost the City.
