“How to Plan for Long Term Care”
President Brian called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m. and
the flag salute was led by guest Rotarian Steve Larimore of the
Alamo Club.
Andy Krake led the singing of God Bless America.
Joel Thornley provided the thought for the day, and repeated
it a few minutes later for the benefit of late arriving Hayward
red-badger Rep. Eric Swalwell: “Suppose you were an idiot.
And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat
myself.” – Mark Twain
Guests included the aforementioned Steve Larimore, a retired
physician from the Alamo Rotary Club; and erstwhile visitor
and electrical contractor Bob Tucknott from the Dublin Rotary.
Conway Pendleton brought the bride he married 64 years
ago, Dorothy. They all got the “Hello” song treatment, led
by Andy Krake.

the successful Felson Builders Construction Co. Rick, Sherry and Joe Felson were
on hand to receive the AIPAC Parners for Tomorrow Award in front of 13,000
delegates to the AIPAC conference. The Felsons are active in AIPAC’s Northern

the club would be lunching as usual on President’s Day.

Speaker - Vernae Graham
“WE’VE BEEN WORKING ON YOUR RAILROAD”
California passenger trains are among the busiest in the
nation, and with new joint powers agreements coming
together at the state level, ridership and service will
continue to grow, Hayward Rotarians were told by
Vernae Graham, media relations manager for Amtrak’s
Government and Corporate Communications Department.
Graham, whose responsibility covers nine western states,
is a Hayward resident based in Oakland and is one of five
primary spokespersons for Amtrak nationwide.
The Northeast Corridor between Washington and Boston
is Amtrak’s most heavily traveled rail line, but it is closely
followed by the Surfliner route between Los Angeles and
San Diego, that had 26 million riders last year and
generated $58.6 million in revenue.
President Brian Schott & Vernae Graham
The third-heaviest travelled Amtrak route is the Capital
Corridor, with 15 round trips a day from Auburn to
San Jose, 1.75 million passengers a year and $27.9 million in revenue.
Both those routes receive some of the $90 million a year in state support along with the third route: The
San Joaquin, that links Oakland, Sacramento and Bakersfield. Talks are underway to develop the newest
“emerging corridor” that would permit rail trips from San Francisco to Los Angeles via the “Coast Daylight.”
“California has 20 percent of all Amtrak passenger service nationwide,” Graham said. “We run 70 trains daily on
seven routes and also have a large network of bus services bridging routes, when necessary. And with the number
of residents in urban areas expected to double by 2050, the need for rail transportation is only going to grow.
That’s one of the reasons I love my job.”
