Tamar Views Bulletin of the Rotary Club of South Launceston No. 395 Nov 13 2014 Visit our website http://www.rotary-sthlaunceston.org.au/ PRESIDENT CRAIG’S NOTES Hello Rotarians, Unfortunately we never got our forum accomplished last week because we ran out of time. Everyone seemed to enjoy the buffet meal with seconds on offer but it does take up time. Next time I think it would be better on a free social night. We will arrange a forum in the future. Chris Westlake spoke to us about the possibility of our involvement with Youngtown and Kings Meadows clubs in the construction of a men’s shed near the Kings Meadows Bowls Club. We will have to discuss this project and make a decision soon. A good roll up at the sheep poo collection on Saturday. The commitment to the farmer to clean out the shed was done and the job completed by lunchtime. We still have outstanding orders so there will be another trip in the next two to three weeks. This time a barbeque will be provided to feed the team and add to the fellowship on the day. Dale, Merylin and myself attended the Rotary District AGM on Saturday. One of the more contentious issues we will have to face is the new police check about to take place. It will only cover children at the moment and will run in conjunction with the current ticket. It’s a bit more complicated than the current model and requires members and their families concerned to attend Service Tasmania at Henty House and have their photo taken the same as a driver’s licence. Unfortunately this is the way of the world and I am sure there will be some good healthy grumbling, but it’s unavoidable. There was also discussion around Rotary Day in three months’ time. With the international theme being Light Up Rotary it is hoped that a group of clubs in our district could combine to light up a building or buildings with possibly the Rotary emblem to increase public awareness of Rotary and its benefit to the community and world in general. Past President Bruce Burke has stepped forward to organise the Christmas party this year at Sharmans. I thank Bruce and urge members to offer him any assistance they can. Rotarian Dennis has updated our facebook with photos of sheep dung collection on Saturday. Our visiting Rotarian Robert from Melton Mowbray in England attended and enjoyed himself doing what he had never done before. The photo of his work boots is worth seeing. Dennis has contacted Robert’s club and invited their participation in our facebook page. Well done Dennis. There looks to be a good roll up to the barbeque on East Beach on Sunday and the fellowship afterwards at Steve and Leonie’s home. See you there Rotarians for this worthy cause. All the best, President Craig APOLOGIESTO TERRY CRAWFORD 6344 7033 OR 0417 366 531 by 10.30am THURSDAY please ITEMS FOR NEXT WEEK’S BULLETIN Please pass bulletin items to BRIAN BEARDWOOD 63273000 or [email protected] before 6.00pm WEDNESDAY please. More details with sheets to come Merilyn B – the club is involved with the “Doing Life Together” weekend of activities at George Town – November 15 & 16. The purpose is to build resilience in communities affected by suicide. Volunteers are needed to help run a barbecue on the Sunday – see Graeme LeF. “The George Town community will get together this month for fun events with a serious message. The George Town Rotary and Community Doing Life Together events, to be held November 15 and 16, will include a semiformal dinner and silent auction followed by a family fun day, both with a focus on mental health.” (The Examiner, Nov 3) Merilyn is now a counsellor for the district Youth Exchange programme. She will be working with both In and Out-bound students. Secretary Glenda will be putting all newsletters on the greeting table in future so have a look at them as you come in. - And she and Dale have received many emails from Di Butler in Tanzania. She asked to be remembered to all in the club and passed on that all is going well at Tarime. We ran out of time to even start our Club Forum so it has been deferred to later in the year RAFFLE - BRIAN HOWARD (NOT REALLY A) GUEST SPEAKER - CHRIS WESTLAKE Chris (RC Youngtown) spoke about a planned project to build a Men’s Shed in Nunamina Ave, Youngtown. The Viet Nam veterans have been running one at Peacehaven but it has severe restrictions there and they have been on the look-out for a new venue so they can increase their membership. The L’ton City Council has been very supportive and made available a block of land in Nunamina Ave. together with the RCs of Youngown and Kings Meadows they are planning to erect a 30 x 10m multi-purpose building for a total cost of $90000. All donations of machinery, materials and labour will be gratefully received. There is a possibility of some government support. Apart from the additional space, they also want to cater better for the needs of both members and the broader community, especially those with minor mental health issues. It will be called “The Rotary and Community Men’s Shed”. While it will be run by the Viet Nam veterans, it will be managed by a board made up of representatives of both Rotary clubs, the LCC and the veterans. THE SERGEANT’S SESSION - Sorry Sheryl, you can’t choose your relatives. Our friendly Secretary, Glenda just dropped in for a cuddle Pres Craig needs to find out who he’s speaking to on the phone before he actually starts talking. Max has been picking up after Monika Graham G – took his grand-child for a walk and fell asleep under a tree. Peter – “Mr Cool” – in his gym wear. And Bruce – another “Mr Cool” perhaps? – 2 men and about 40 women in his water-aerobics group Treasurer Steve F copped a hefty speeding fine but lost no points. The moral of the story – do it in Spain! MORE FROM ST JUDES From: St Jude's - Sponsor Correspondence <[email protected]> Subject: A few words from Humphrey Nkya! Date: 1 November 2014 12:12:08 am AEDT To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Dear All at the Rotary Club of South Launceston, Greetings from St Jude’s! We are very excited to introduce to you a new form of correspondence from our fantastic teachers here at St Jude’s who are eager to share their success with you! Humphrey has written a letter of introduction, touching on some of the interesting things happening in their classroom this year, as well as all the ways your sponsorship is making a difference. Please feel free to email or write to your sponsored teacher. You can send emails to [email protected] and the sponsorship team will be happy to pass on your letter to your sponsored teacher. Please be aware that our teachers may not always be able to reply to you due to their busy academic schedules. We hope you enjoy Humphrey’s letter below and we would love any feedback you may have. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for your continuing support of St Jude’s. **************** First of all I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Humphrey Nkya. I am a secondary teacher with teaching experience of 12 years. My teaching subjects from the college are chemistry and biology however I teach only biology at the School of St Jude. I joined the School of St Jude in 2009 when the secondary school had just started with form one. I was a homeroom teacher for five years till earlier this year when I was given other responsibilities as a head of department. I really enjoy teaching and it has been a pleasure to share my knowledge and experience with the students, staff and parents. I like teaching biology because it deals with life and health of living things. Also, most of my students in school love biology. In addition to that, I love teaching biology because there are lots of teaching and learning resources most of them from the environment, while others I make myself. Furthermore the parents follow up the progress of their children closely. They ensure that students do the holiday homeworks they are given. Parents play a big role of correcting student’s behaviour while at home. They teach them ethics and consequently the discipline of my students is very good. I believe that a good teacher doesn’t have one dimension, but two. They not only make students excel, but they make them want to go to school to change their lives. They care about the students’ insecurities and problems and most importantly they are there to support. ROTARIANS HIDING BEHIND THEIR BADGES FOR GUEST SPEAKER SPOTS. SEE KEVIN An old Cherokee Indian and his grandson were having a conversation. The old man is reported to have said” Inside everyone is a terrible fight going on between two wolves. One is evil, full of anger, greed arrogance, resentment and ego. The other is good, full of joy, peace, love, generosity and compassion. The same fight is going on inside you and inside all of us. The grandson thought about it for a long while, and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed” ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTH LAUNCESTON Club Chartered March 17 1962 with 23 members 53rd Year of Rotary Service Thursday Meeting 6pm for 6.30pm Hotel Grand Chancellor 29 Cameron St, Launceston Make-ups & Apologies Assist-Secretary Terry Crawford Before 10.30 am Thursday 6344 7033 (W) 0417 366 531 Correspondence PO Box 60 Kings Meadows 7249 District Governor District 9830 2014-2015 Ken Moore Rotary Club of Burnie Tel: Home:6433 3694 Mobile:0418 444 034 Email: [email protected] President Craig Mitchell Tel: Home: 6344 2710 Mob: 0407 305 129 Email: [email protected] Secretary Glenda Iles Tel: Home: 6344 9196 Mob: 0419 628 437 Email: [email protected] Editor Ian Fraser Tel: Mob: 0400 887 224 Email: [email protected] Items by 1.00pm Wednesdays please Rotary Grace For good food, good fellowship and the opportunity of service through Rotary, we give thanks.'
