Voss is one of Norway’s most popular ski
destinations. It’s a spectacular winter sports
paradise where visitors can sample exhilarating
downhill, cross-country and snowboarding
activities, before heading for the lively après-ski
or to unwind in their high-quality chalet,
apartment or hotel.
The ski runs at Voss are widely considered to be
amongst the best in Norway. Most of the
prepared runs and cross-country trails are
located at or close to Voss Resort (just to the
north of the town centre) and Voss Fjellandsby,
Myrkdalen, a fast-growing resort 25 kilometres
away. Voss, a premier ski destination, hosts the
Norwegian Skiing Championships, FIS World Cup
events and other top winter sports gatherings.
All ages and abilities are catered for, from
beginners and children to expert skiers. A
network of cable cars and ski lifts carries
enjoyed. The highlands of Hordaland are
especially majestic draped in heavy snow and it
snows more here than it does almost anywhere
else in Norway (around 2.5 to 3.5 metres
annually). There are so many ski areas and open
spaces that congestion is not an issue. Even
better, every downhill run, cross-country trail
and ski lift is tended with trademark Norwegian
efficiency throughout the long winter season,
which lasts from early December until May.
There is a lot of winter in Voss!

Location & Transport
Standing on the main road and rail line from
Bergen to Oslo, Voss is located 116 kilometres
(72 miles) east of Bergen, the largest and most
cosmopolitan city on Norway’s Fjord Coast.
Bergen Airport, Flesland is the nearest airport
and has a broad selection of scheduled services
and charters. Bergen Railway Station is just a
20-minute transfer from the airport. There is a
frequent train service, which takes just over one
hour; a coach journey direct from the airport
should take no more than two hours.

One Destination, Two Resorts
Voss Resort
Voss Fjellandsby, Myrkdalen
Voss Resort is situated just to the north of
the town and offers excellent ski potential
for all, from easy slopes to challenging
terrain for expert skiers. The resort has 40
kilometres of prepared alpine runs and 20
kilometres of cross-country trails. There is
also a dedicated snowboard park, a ski
school and ski hire. Snow cannons
guarantee perfect conditions throughout
the season.
Voss Fjellandsby (Voss Mountain Village) in
Myrkdalen benefits from 2.5-3.5 metres of
snowfall each year. The 225-acre ski area
has a total drop of 615 metres (2,015 feet)
and offers beginners’ and intermediate
slopes, advanced runs and off-piste slopes.

utmost comfort and convenience. Most runs are
above the tree line and skiers can typically pick
their own tracks, whether on alpine, snowboard
or cross-country skis.
Easy to Reach
Getting to and from Voss could hardly be simpler. Guests can travel from Oslo, but
most choose to fly direct into Norway’s second biggest aviation gateway, Bergen
Airport. From here, the regular train service to Voss takes just over an hour. By car
or coach, the total ground transport time is under two hours.

The Voss resort infrastructure caters
for all ages and abilities, from small
children and families to expert skiers. This helps
to explain the region’s popularity with Norwegian
and international families.
Massive investments have been made
in state-of-the-art facilities, ski lifts
and additional infrastructure at Voss. Safety is a
key focus area. The slopes are groomed on a
regular basis. In the rare event of an accident,
emergency care at Voss is tried and tested.
Bergen Airport has a good scheduled
and charter network; there are good
road and rail connections from Bergen to Voss
(journey time: between 1 hour 15 minutes and
two hours depending on the mode of transport).
Snow is guaranteed throughout the
winter season in the Voss region, from
early December until early May. This region
benefits from some of the heaviest snowfall
anywhere in Norway.
Simply put, there isn’t any! While many
of the Alpine resorts suffer from the
frustration of queues, Voss is known for its space
and natural tranquillity; skiers can enjoy the runs
without having to battle through crowds.

Voss Ski Venture offers high quality accommodation next
to Lake Vangsvatnet. In total, there are 40 rooms (200

needs. There are no telephones or TVs in the rooms, but
there is a guest kitchen and TV-room in the hostel. There
is also a room for table tennis. In the winter, guests can
use the sauna after a day of skiing and relax by the
fireplace in the evening.
Health & Safety
A ski trip to Voss benefits from high levels of safety and
security. Large-scale invesments have been made in
recent years to install modern ski and resort
infrastructure at all locations; the ski areas are very well
maintained throughout the ski season. If an accident
should occur, Voss has a tried-and-tested emergency
procedure; there are health professionals on site and
helicopters can be summoned at short notice to take
injured parties straight to hospital.
Party Leader: A leader is appointed to be responsible
for the smooth running of each party, and is prepared to
handle any emergencies that may arise. Party leaders
and teachers give the Venture total supervision and help
maintain its high standards.

Voss is a municipality in
the County of Hordaland
(population: 470,000),
part of Norway’s famous
fjord region. The main
urban centre, Voss (also
known as Vossevangen;
population: 14,000), is

100 kilometres east of

road and rail line to Oslo.
Surrounded by snow-capped mountains,

natural ingredients to develop as a year-round

emerged on the map of extreme sports’ centres.
Often described as a ‘northern hemisphere New
Zealand’, Voss is now attracting significant
public and private sector investment. It’s also
the fastest growing ski resort in Norway, with firm
plans to develop as the country’s largest ski
destination in the next five years.
So close to Norway’s second city, Bergen, to
Flåm and the spectacular Sognefjord, Voss is
never short of domestic tourism visitors. The
area has traditionally been very popular in the
summer holiday period; now, more and more
people are taking advantage of the amenities
and experiences on offer in winter for an actionpacked holiday experience. Voss is set to
become the most popular ski area in Norway!
The alpine slopes at Voss lie between the
mountains of Hanguren and Bavallen. Visitors
have a choice of 14 ski lifts, including a gondola
lift from the village, to carry them safely up to
almost 1,000 metres above sea level. Voss also
has a snow park and a children’s area (snowmaking facilities guarantee perfect conditions
throughout the ski season). Voss Fjellandsby,
Myrkdalen, is 25 kilometres northeast of Voss
and has six ski lifts/T bars, which can safely
transport 7,000 skiers per hour.
Snow Conditions
Snowfall was consistently heavy at Voss during
the 2008/9 ski season. The season starts in
early December and extends until early May.
Higher up the slopes, at such locations as
Myrkdalen, temperatures can be much colder
than they are elsewhere in Norway, so the
chances of snow improve considerably.

Environment
Voss is a peaceful, tidy and well-kept town with
just one main road running through its centre.
Expect fresh air and sometimes bracing
conditions, which add to the appeal of this
mountainous extreme sports environment. High
quality public ground transport – rail and bus
services – connects Voss to the nearby urban
centres, with particularly frequent options
available to and from Bergen. Most hotels have
environmental and recycling programmes in
place to ensure that the environment retains its
unspoiled charm. The ski areas are set out to

The ski areas north of the town are accessible
via the Hangursbanen cable car. There is also
chairlift access from Bavallen, a short distance
northeast of Voss. The ski infrastructure at
Myrkdalen is just as comprehensive. The town
itself has more than 100 shops, cafés, pubs and
nightclubs, which support a vibrant après-ski
atmosphere, as well as diverse accommodation
for up to 2,500 visitors.

The table below reveals that France commands
the largest share of the UK outbound market for
winter ski tourism, followed by Austria. Both
markets witnessed an increase in market share
in 2007/8, whilst Italy and Andorra saw the
market contract slightly.
Historically, the Alpine resorts have dominated
the market. Bulgaria is a new entry, while high
fuel prices could impact on traffic to the USA
and Canada in coming years. Norway remains a
‘niche’ destination, but one with the potential to
attract a much higher market share as the
effects of climate change on some Alpine
destinations becomes more tangible.
It is important to note that Norway is not as
expensive as you might think.
Voss compares favourably to the prices on offer
at the traditional Alpine resorts. Just as
important is the ease of access for ski
customers via Bergen Airport, which is not as
congestion prone as airports serving the Alps
during the winter season. Voss also wins with
regard to the total ski package – in particular,
the cost of lift passes.
Benefits
One of the main reasons why French winter
sport resorts have done so well with the UK
market is the abundance of low-cost
accommodation. The high-speed rail access
from Britain to the Alps (a relatively stress-free
way to get to the resorts) is another key factor.
Travellers examining the cost of a ski vacation –

– will naturally investigate the price of ski lift
passes, which at some Alpine resorts can high
