How to combat stress in the workplace
TREND: If stress is affecting your work negatively, it’s time to make some changes
JEANNE HUGO
THE clock is ticking. Your
work is piling up. Just when
you think that your day could
not get any worse, your boss
assigns you new tasks. You
have trouble breathing, your
heart is racing and the only
coherent thought in your
head is: “I’ll never be able to
finish everything in time.”
Sound familiar? Most people will experience stress in
one form or another during
their careers. We live in an
extremely fast-paced economy and stress is part of our
daily lives. However, should

you notice that it is starting to
affect negatively your work
and personal life, it’s time to
make some changes.
Here are some quick tips
for immediate stress relief
during the workday, for those
moments when you feel that
you will explode at the smallest provocation:
• Take a minute to do some
breathing exercises. This will
give your overworked brain a
break, and the fresh supply of
oxygen will go a long way to
clear your head and to give
you new energy. It will also
help you relax.
• Take a break. Don’t auto-
matically head for the coffee
machine — at this point, cof-

fee and sugary drinks will
only worsen your already
fragile state. Instead, get
yourself a drink of water or
head outside for a walk.
• Talk to someone, be it a
friend, family member or
colleague. Voicing your frustrations or fears give you a
chance to put them in perspective.
• Take care to be aware of
what you are thinking. Put a
stop to negative thoughts
such as: “I will be here all
night” or “we will never
make the deadline”. These
become self-fulfilling prophesies which hinder your pro-
ductivity. Instead, focus your
mind on a positive mantra to
keep you going and motivated. It may also help to
focus on something positive
which you are looking forward to.
• When you feel overwhelmed, try to step back
and assess the situation rationally. Take a look at all your
tasks and list them in order
of priority. Assign each task
an expected, realistic time of
completion. Now get cracking
with the most important job
and take it one step at a
time.
• Granted, such an assess-
ment may reveal that you
are, indeed, out of your depth
with regards to your workload. If that is the case, don’t
be afraid to ask for help.
Whether you ask a colleague
or inform your boss that your
workload is getting the better
of you, the key is to know that
it is better to ask for help
than to suffer in silence.
• Give yourself space within
which to work. Shut down
your e-mail, unplug your
phone and try to clear your
desk. Create a productive
workspace and eliminate any
distractions.
