Childbirth Preparation Classes.
Preparation for Childbirth
Why prepare for
childbirth with a class?
You may be thinking, “Why should I bother
with a class for birth? I can get tons of
information on the internet or from friends.”
A Childbirth Preparation class is the perfect
way to get ready for your baby for these
important reasons:
•O
ur nationally-certified instructors can
help you sort through what you have heard
about birth and separate reality from hype.
They teach evidence-based information
and realistic techniques for coping with
labor. They will share with you the growing
body of research about the ways that birth
can be helped or hindered.
• If you are planning to use medication for
labor, “Childbirth Preparation” classes are
perfect to help you understand epidurals
(and other medications) and their risks
and benefits.
Wondering how well you will manage labor? .
Confidence begins here! Our childbirth preparation
courses will provide you with accurate information .
as you prepare for labor and birth. Let our nationally .
certified childbirth instructors teach you about the .
labor process, coping and breathing techniques and the
latest about epidurals, medication and interventions. .
You will also learn about strategies for partners, .
cesarean birth and hospital procedures. Learn how to
manage the pain of labor and become empowered with
knowledge and skills for birth. We suggest pairing this
class with a Labor Lab session (see page 8).
Cost: $75 per couple
When to take this class: Complete by four weeks before
your due date.
Offered: O

Private Childbirth Preparation
This method of preparing for childbirth might be .
a good fit if you prefer to learn at your own pace, .
have been placed on bed rest, or if your work/travel .
schedules prevent you from committing to a traditional
class. This self-paced course is a mix of self-study .
using web-based readings and video, with an optional
Labor Lab session. If you are unable to attend a childbirth class, a certified
childbirth instructor can meet with you by appointment
for a 21⁄2-hour session. Call The Center for Childbirth at
303-689-4701 to schedule a private class arranged to
meet your needs.
Here’s how Lessons Online works:
1. Register for the course. You will receive your .
personal access code to Lessons Online. This .
website provides easy-to-understand explanations
with graphics and videos to teach you about the .
process of birth.
2. View the website at your own pace. The helpful
graphics and short video clips scattered throughout
the course, as well as the assessments, will help .
you feel confident about birth.
3. Attend a Labor Lab session (this is optional and can
be arranged when you register for Lessons Online or
after you have completed the course). Labor Lab is
an opportunity to practice the skills learned online in
an actual labor setting.
Cost: $150 (due at time of registration)
When to take this class: Complete by three weeks
before your due date.
On Bed Rest?
If you have been placed on bed rest, we can help you
prepare for your birth with books, supplies and online
or private classes for:
• Childbirth preparation
• Breastfeeding
• Registering for your hospital stay and a virtual tour
Call Family Education and Support at 303-689-4701,
and we will help design an educational program that

Why Should I Choose to
Breastfeed?
While you are pregnant, you comfort,
protect and nourish your baby. Breastfeeding
is a wonderful way to continue this care
after your baby is born.
Making the choice to breast or formula feed
is not just a matter of personal p
 reference.
There are important differences between
breast milk and formula that you should be
aware of.
Breast milk provides the best possible food
for your baby because it is more easily
digested and protects against allergies and
illnesses, like painful ear infections, and
pneumonia.
Breastfed babies have lower risks for
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome/
Crib Death), obesity, diabetes and cancer.
Breastfed babies get milk that’s perfect
for them — fewer tummy aches and less
diarrhea or constipation. They get so much
holding and cuddling, it is no wonder moms
and babies love it! The American Academy
of Pediatrics r ecommends breastfeeding for
at least one year and exclusive breastfeeding
until infants are six months old.
You may also be surprised to know that
women who breastfeed usually lose their
pregnancy weight more quickly and that
they have a lower incidence of breast and
ovarian cancers.
Breastfeeding has another advantage —
it is inexpensive. The cost to breastfeed
your baby is less than half the cost of
formula feeding.

to tell them I am having a baby?
Do I need to pay before I am discharged
from the hospital?
It is a good idea to call your insurance carrier to .
determine the following:
• Similar to a doctor’s visit, payment is due prior to or
at the time of service.
• If maternity benefits are a part of your policy, and .
if prior authorization is needed.
• Our Registration Team would like to collect your portion .
of your bill when you pre-register. This makes your
delivery experience free of the business paperwork.
• The amount of inpatient hospital co-pay, deductible
and/or co-insurance that will be due when you deliver.
• How you should add your newborn to your insurance
policy. You generally have 30 days from the date of
birth to add your newborn to your policy. This may
change the premium that your employer charges .
you for the insurance coverage; contact your Human
Resources Department to determine this.
The hospital will notify your insurance carrier for .
the following:
• If necessary, our Financial Counselor can assist you in
developing a payment plan that meets your financial
needs.
Am I responsible for billing my insurance
carrier?
• The hospital will bill the insurance company you .
designate at the time of registration.
• An inpatient authorization and your eligibility .
and benefits.
• You (or the responsible party identified for services)
are ultimately responsible for all charges denied or
not covered by your insurance.
• If your baby needs to stay in the hospital after mother
has been discharged.
When will I receive a bill from Exempla
Healthcare?
Do I need to pre-register before delivery?
• You will receive a statement from Exempla once we
have received and applied the payment from your
insurance company. Your final financial responsibility
will be determined at that time. If you pre-paid your
co-pay or deductible, you will not receive a statement
from the hospital, but you will get an Explanation of
Benefits from your insurance carrier.
Yes. You should pre-register so that your hospitalization
and billing details are taken care of before you .
arrive. Our goal is to make your time in the hospital .
a pleasant experience, hassle free of business details. Pre-registration is accomplished during Baby Business
(see page 9) where you will learn about your stay, .
tour the Center for Childbirth and submit several .
required forms. When our registration team enters .
information from the Pre-Registration Form into .
our system, they may call you with questions and .
to pre-collect your patient liability. You may also .
contact the hospital’s Registration Department at .
303-689-6300 to pre-register.
What do I do if I am uninsured?
• Contact our Financial Counselor at 303-689-6323; .
or the Pricing Coordinator in the Billing Office at .
303-272-0470 to see if you qualify for federal aid or
charity care. We can also give you information about
our discounted Uninsured Maternity Program.
• We may request your assistance while we are .
pursuing payment from your insurance provider.
Who else might send me a bill?
You may receive separate bills from the following:
• Your baby’s physician
• Anesthesiologist
• Pathologist
• Radiologists
• Emergency physician
• Other hospital-related services, such as, ambulance .
or air-life services that you may have utilized..
For additional questions, please contact
our Registration Team at 303-689-6300 or
our Billing Center at 303-813-5300.

A Final Word
We are delighted that you let us share the privilege of welcoming your new baby to the

your baby, enjoy watching him or her grow and develop. Read and listen to the advice of
others, then do what you think is best for you and your baby. Being a good parent requires
patience, common sense and openness between you, your partner and your child — and
lots and lots of love. Congratulations!

pumps in Denver.
The Nursing Nook is a specialty shop located in the
Center for Childbirth at Exempla Good Samaritan .
Medical Center. We provide one-stop shopping to meet
the needs of expectant and new mothers. Different from
a department store clerk, our certified staff can provide
you with the information necessary to help you select
the right bra, pump or other nursing product. Choosing a Nursing Bra
Our boutique offers knowledgeable staff and
some of the lowest prices in the metro area on:
You should select a nursing bra during the final .
weeks of pregnancy or right after your baby is born. Because of the many breast changes, fitting too early .
in pregnancy may result in a poor postpartum fit and .
can lead to breastfeeding problems. We recommend
having at least three nursing bras. • Products to ease early pregnancy discomforts, such as
nausea, breast tenderness and backache
• Nursing bras with styles that fit sizes 32A to 52K
• Breast pump rental, sales, and replacement parts
• Nursing tanks and nightwear
• Nursing pillows and other nursing supplies
• Preemie clothes and supplies
• Essential newborn clothing and accessories
If you ask most women, they will tell you that their .
least favorite item to shop for is a bra. The Nursing
Nook is here to help you. Different from a department
store clerk, our staff has the knowledge to assist you .
in finding the right nursing bra. The right bra will make
breastfeeding easier and more discreet. Features to look for are breathable fabrics and straps
that don’t dig into your shoulder. It’s also important that
you are able to manipulate the cup openings with one
hand (your other one will be holding your baby!).
