BUILDING AN ENTERPRISE MOBILITY BUDGET FOR 2013 With tips from Ian Runyon 12/26/12 WIRELESS MANAGEMENT Budget Planning for 2013 With the New Year comes budget planning and if you’re in charge of the mobility budget at your company there are many unexplained and mysterious costs to consider. 1. Managed Mobility Service (MMS) Provider Fees Does the MMS solution provide lifecycle management for the entire wireless program or will you need more than one provider? 2. Carrier Costs Cost Types MRC (Monthly Recurring Costs) vs. device costs Real Spending Understanding actual spend with each carrier so comparisons can be made between them Carrier Service & Signal Offering only the proper carriers to your end users to ensure they have the coverage and service required for them to do their job effectively For example, if Carrier A gets poor signal in a certain area, users in that area should not be presented with the option to select Carrier A. Do they have resources available to be productive right away? 5. Help Desk Support Support Offerings Will you keep the help desk internal, or will you set up external support? Available Features 9. Workflow Efficiencies Available Plans What plans are available? Voice, Data, International, etc? Role Based Features Prevent waste by using roles to determine available features Compare Carriers Ensure that carriers offer necessary coverage and features Does the carrier you choose offer pooling options? Data? Roaming? Workflows Become Less Efficient Over Time Usually due to an old workflow or program trying to handle the complexities of a modern wireless program End User Ordering Systems How do users place orders/check eligibility, etc? Is it consistent and trackable? Are users only presented with the things they should be allowed to order based on their role? Procurement Workflows Approval processes, centralized portal, or are admins having to log into individual carrier portals to place and track device orders. How long does it take a device - after it is ordered - to get in the hands of the user? 7. Waste & Abuse Unused / Underused Lines Failure to manage unused/underused lines For example: MOBI has seen processes which take up to 30 days solely because of inefficient workflows. Could someone order a device and sell it without anyone at the company knowing? How are lost/broken/stolen devices managed? 8. Security Company data existing on devices the company is unaware of and failing to ensure wireless policy acceptance and enforcement (potentially resulting in lost or stolen data, or compromised security) Device Preparation & Kitting Workflows How long does prepping a device take? Is it a consistent experience for all users? Is the experience consistent no matter what carrier they have? Expense Management Workflows How are you managing expenses today? Manually in a spreadsheet? Do you have a TEM today? Does the TEM require manual maintenance by an internal resource to reconcile or load data? How much time does this take? Does this tie to procurement workflows and associated automatically to users? Support Workflows Who does a user call when they need support? Do they have different contacts based on their location? Do these users get a consistent experience? Do users ever have to contact a carrier directly? Are Tier 1, 2 and 3 support handled by a single resource or are users routed to multiple places over the course of a support request?
