Juniors show seniors how to win big Travelling to Mt Torrens on Saturday created some big wins by our juniors but as the day got longer the winning margins got smaller and smaller. Scott Match Report: Fine conditions greeted the Barkeroos when they visited Mt Torrens to take on the local team. The Roos were off to a good start, peppering the scoreboard end, against the breeze. The first goal of the match came about when Mark Obushak's precise kick found Simon Nunan who goaled. Henry Johnson marked strongly to kick the second goal to give the visitors a handy lead. However the Loins hit back and kicked two goals to level the scores. Just before quarter time the Roos took the lead when Nunan kicked his second goal. The Roos stopped running and let their opponents gain first use of the ball. The Loins booted six goals whereas the Roos could only register two through Johno and Jared Chaplin. The Roos lost the battle around the midfield to more desperate opponents and when they did have use of the ball, they wasted opportunities with poor disposal. Coach Samuels' halftime instructions reaped benefits, as the Roos' endeavour and ball use improved. Tom Hughes, Phil Smith (playing his first A grade game in two years) , Michael Pope took control of the midfield and stopped the Lions running game. Luke Giles lifted his work rate against formidable opposition to give his onballers an even chance at the stoppages. Johno was unstoppable up forward and kicked three goals with good service from upfield. Caine Jinnette andLuke Az also booted majors to bring the Roos to within three points at the final change. Unfortunately, the Roos were restricted in the fourth Q as they lost Obushak, Jinnette and Luke Az to injury. Steve Samuels asked for an extra level of effort from his team against a tenacious rival. As he had proved all match Johno was the difference in the end, booting two majors to take his tally to seven for the match. The visitors had a late scare as Mt Torrens refused to go away, bagging two late goals to almost snatch victory. The match ended in confusion as the scoreboard did not reflect the true score. The teams and the spectators had to wait until the goal umpires conferred and awarded the match to the Barkeroos by a solitary behind. Congratulations to Ben Pomery who played his first A Grade on Saturday and acquitted himself quite well. Coach Samuels would have appreciated the hard won victory considering the injuries and the difficult opponent on their home ground. B Grade: Mt Barker 6.18 (54) def TV 5.7 (37) Goal Kickers: L. Mount Barker were winning clearances and dominating possession across the ground. Unfortunately the dominance was not shown on the scoreboard with Mount Barker holding a narrow 10 point lead at quarter time with an inaccurate 1 goal 5 behinds booted by the visitors. Daniel Orr was a real target up forward and was leading hard and marking everything that was in his area. Marko Kovac was also controlling the game as a key Mount Barker Football Club, Howard Lane, Mount Barker Postal Address: PO Box 31, Mount Barker SA 5251. Kovac’s ability to read the play and set up his team mates in better positions was very important. At half time Mount Barker had kicked away to a 38 point lead. Zac Beck was super impressive in the ruck and winning the majority of hit outs. Beck was playing with a level of poise and composure that you don’t expect from a first year Under 17 player. Beck’s class in booting several long goals from beyond 50 was a major reason why Mount Barker were able to kick 6 goals in the third quarter. Josh Teakle was hard at the ball all day and helped set up team mates with clever handball options from tight spots. Cooper Gluyas played a complete game and was clearly the most influential player on the ground over 4 quarters. Gluyas had more time than any other player on the ground with his great ability to read the play and continually turn 50/50 contests into wins for his team. Mount Barker eventually ran out comfortable 88 point winners and it was great to see a very even contribution from all the boys. Junior Colts: Mt Barker: 25.12 (162) def. TV 0.0 (0) Goal Kickers: R. On a cool morning where Torrens Valley only had 13 players and needed to borrow 3 from us each quarter, the young Barkeroos played some great footy In scenes repeated later in the day by Port Power the boys put on a great display of team footy with fast ball movement, quick hands and some good long kicking. There was a wide spread of goal kickers with Jesse Hill 4, Ben Kneebone 4, Amos Doyle 3, Hayden Massey 2, Johnathon Henderson 1, Zac Edwards 1 and Marshall Howe 1. Torrens Valley's only goal came from Mt Barkers Jarrod Hogben 1. Coach Bruce was very happy with all the players who played for the opposition without complaint With players being rotated between teams and positions each quarter, it is fair to say all the Boys played well Looking forward to the next game!
