Friday Enrichment Offerings Skinner Middle School Spring 2013 Title Number Title / Description 1 Instructor Learn how to Geocache: Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunt played all across the world. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS device. This enrichment will introduce you to the world of geocaching. We will look for caches hidden on or near Skinner Middle School by learning how to use a GPS device and a little bit of detective work. 2 LET’S GROW TOGETHER! Explore positive and healthy decision making! This class will help you to understand how to develop an emotional, physical and spiritual Well-Being! Mrs. Ahern 119 (15) PDC Ms. Stone & Ms. Montoya (10) GIRLS ONLY!! 3 Board Games A little competition and a lot of fun!! Come and play board games! Apples to Apples, Uno, chess, Monopoly and Life! Bring it on. Kitchen Rm 7 (20) 4 Origami Discover the ancient Japanese art of folding paper. Transform ordinary sheets of paper into distinctive shapes. Learn to create animals, geometric shapes, puppets and toys. Learn to make unique and decorative objects. Come and join the fun! Mrs. Koyama/ Ms. Chavira 118 (15) 5 ZUMBA/YOGA Come and get your heart rate up as we move to Latin music in our Zumba portion of the enrichment. The last 15 minutes will be an opportunity to stretch the muscles used and relax into some yoga poses. If you are signing up for this enrichment, you will be expected to participate, there is no standing and watching. It is okay to do it wrong, it is about having fun and getting our bodies moving. 6 Ms. Anderson Cafeteria (20) Skateboard Club Learn and practice new techniques, meet new people and learn the history of skateboarding. Students should only register if they are able to provide their own equipment. Safety Mr. Martin Room 10 (20) equipment is encouraged but not required. 7 Indoor Floor Hockey Come play floor hockey in the East Gym! You can learn the basics of the sport through scrimmage play, and work towards improving your skills each week. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even try your stick at goalie. Who knows, you may discover that floor hockey is your new favorite sport! Ms. Kendall W. Gym (14) 8 Makeovers Minus the Makeup Wanna be a Cover Girl without relying on expensive makeup and hair supplies? In this class, we will look at fun ways to create new styles at home. We will: - make masks for our hair and skin using avocado, honey and olive oil -create nail art with stickers and French manicures with tape -learn to roll our hair with cut up socks We will even have guest speakers who have been professionally trained who will help us rediscover our confidence and put our best face forward! Ms. Hale 120 (15) 9 iPad Moviemaking Do you have Hollywood dreams, but you prefer to be behind the camera? In this course, you will use iMovie to experience the process of filmmaking, including: pitching ideas, writing a script, storyboarding, filming, editing, and screening. This course is perfect for any student who has a creative mind, a passion for storytelling, and a willingness to work. By the end, you will produce a short film worthy of two thumbs up. 10 Woodworker for Life! Let's crank up the wood working shop. Students will learn about basic wood working concepts and build a hand sanding block for their first project and culminate with a major final project 11 Geek Squad is calling YOU! This class is geared for all you techie minded scholars. We will explore computer gaming in class while learning how games are similar to each other and skills needed to master them. Being competitive and math savvy are required, but having a pocket protector and slide ruler are not. Learn to build your own app! Smart phone or tablet is *not* required." Mr. Ahern C-2 (17) 13 SCORPIAN PRIDE LEADERSHIP Would you like to be a leader? This is your big opportunity to have a say in activities that build school spirit. Pull out your creative self as this group will be actively developing and organizing our Monthly Celebrations, Spirit Week, school dances and end of the year celebrations. In addition to meeting on Fridays there may be times when this group meets after school to complete projects. Some of our class time will be spent on discussing the characteristics and qualities of positive leadership. 14 Mr. Waldon (20) Room 119 Co-Ed Volleyball Come out to play some volleyball! We will be doing a mix of skill building, tournaments, King/Queen of the court, and other fun volleyball activities! Whether you are a beginner or an expert, if you just want to have some fun, improve your skills, and play volleyball, this enrichment is for you. E. Gym (18) Ms. Stickl 15 Magic Tricks This class is for those who are interested in learning the art of magic. Come learn and share different techniques that can be used for slight-of-hand and stage magic. Open to any interested 6th, 7th, or 8th graders. Mr. Dywer 224 (20) 16 Cooking, Cooking, Cooking! Enjoy creating delicious treats and goodies. In this class you will learn to explore a variety of foods. Learn how to prepare foods and become the ultimate chef! Neighborhood Center ( 15) Ms. Torres 17 True Beauty and Fitness Girls only-- Do you want to more confidence about your personality and body? You will learn simple things you can do to “get in shape” mentally and physically. Come have fun doing hair, make up and nails. Get cute new ways to dress for your style and body type.
