Interested applicants must attend all training sessions. “But I don’t know how to write a Cover Letter…” Your cover letter has three main purposes: (1) to introduce yourself to your potential employer, (2) to sell yourself as a desirable candidate for the position, and (3) to seek further action, typically an interview. While it is the résumé that displays your fundamental qualifications, it is your cover letter that allows you to showcase your specific talents. A few Cover Letter guidelines… ü Your cover letter should be the first page of your résumé/application packet. ü A half to a full page is an appropriate length. ü Address your letter to the Area Manager of the position you are applying for: o RecSports Official – Joe Sloan ü Proofread and use spell check! ü Be sure to sign your letter between your closing and typed name – unsigned materials will not be considered. Format: Ø Your first paragraph should include why you are writing. Why are you interested in this position? How did you hear about it? Ø Your second paragraph should describe what skills, experience, and attributes you possess that make you a suitable candidate for this position. Give emphasis to your qualifications based on the needs of Team Mizzou and the position. This is your opportunity to sell yourself! Ø Your third and final paragraph should allude to some sort of action. Indicate that you look forward to an interview. Thank your reader for considering your application. Need more help? Ronald McDonald, a former employee of Team Mizzou, is my manager at the Arnold Rec Center and has always told me how much he enjoyed his experience working with Team Mizzou. He, along with Ann Stoverink, a current Team Mizzou Deck Manager who I also know from the Arnold Rec Center, prompted me to apply for a position. When I heard of the Assistant to the Associate Directors position at the recruitment session, it sounded like the perfect job for me. As you will see from the enclosed resume, I have experience in an office position, where I often kept track of resident databases using multiple programs including Microsoft Access. In addition to this, I have also been a lifeguard at the Arnold Rec Center since last March, giving me great familiarity with a health facility setting. I have held many positions of leadership, including Yearbook Technical Editor, National Honor Society Secretary, and memberships in many other clubs at my high school. By participating in my high school’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, I won first place in the district competition in the category of Computer Applications, which tested skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. As you can see, my awards and accomplishments are the direct results of my strong work ethic and sense of responsibility, my dedication to personal and professional excellence, and my ability to balance a number of tasks and commitments. I look forward to scheduling an interview with you. It is a great opportunity and I feel that my background makes me a perfect candidate for this position. If you have any questions, or would like to schedule an interview, please contact me at (573) 882-2046. I look forward to meeting you and further discussing employment opportunities with Team Mizzou. Thank you very much for considering me for this opening. Sincerely, Sally Sunshine Sally Sunshine Enclosures “But I don’t know how to write a Résumé…” Your résumé is most important in your application packet. The purpose of your résumé is to obtain an interview. Your résumé should showcase your skills and accomplishments in a way that is both interesting and easy to read. It should stand on its own and tell a potential employer why you should be hired for the position. This is your chance to create a positive impression and make an employer want to discuss potential opportunities within their company. A few Résumé guidelines… ü Create a heading that includes your full name, address, phone number, and email address. You want it to be easy for your reader to contact you. ü Organize your qualifications. For college students, it is best to organize by subject (education, work experience, certifications, etc.), and then chronologically within each subject, starting with the most recent. ü Tweak your résumé to fit the specific position you are applying for. Each time you apply for a job you should update your résumé. ü PROOFREAD!!! ü The purpose of your résumé is not to list your prior jobs. Your objective is to describe what skills you have acquired as a result of previous jobs. Highlight your accomplishments. ü Make sure to list any and all job-related experiences. For example, if you are applying for an official position, list any sports and teams for which you played. Need more help?
