T
he University of Toronto Mississauga offers
undergraduate students the chance to work on
cutting-edge research through the Research
Opportunity Program (ROP). Research takes place with
one of many highly qualified instructors from one of
many departments on campus. ROP courses are held
across all three disciplines: Sciences, Social Sciences and
Humanities!
There is a new online application process involved with
the ROP known as the ROPAPP. Students are not
permitted to register in ROP courses without having
submitted an application and having been selected to
participate in a leading faculty member’s research
project. The application period happens only once per
year for both the Summer and Fall/Winter course
offerings.
ROP projects take place during the Summer and
Fall/Winter sessions and successful applicants will earn
1.0 full credit by participating in and completing their
registered ROP project. ROP courses count toward your
GPA and provide you with practical skills and
knowledge that can be applied to careers after
graduation or toward future graduate studies.
University of Toronto Mississauga students use their
ROP experiences to build a strong relationship with
their instructor, learn about exciting new
developments in their research field and explore new
areas of interest. Most importantly, they become
involved in hands-on formal research. Where else can
you find practical research training in an
undergraduate setting!
Descriptions of the ROP projects are available through
the ROPAPP. Visit the ROP website for deadline dates
and valuable information concerning the Research
Opportunity Program.
ROP projects are offered at the 200, 300 & 400 levels.
Projects are listed according to their academic discipline and
year level. For example:

ROP Student Testimonials
“Working with Professor Green in SOC299Y5 allowed me to step
outside the classroom and get more hands on experience about how
research is conducted.”
Huda Saifullah
“As part of my ROP (ENG399Y5) work with Professor Gillespie, I
accompanied her to England in December, 2008 to assist with her
work at manuscript libraries there. I applied to the ROP program
with the expectation of working closely alongside a professor and
developing vital research skills, thereby becoming acquainted with
the standard of scholarly work conducted at higher levels of
academia…[the opportunity] surpassed my initial expectations of
the ROP experience…”
Devani Singh
“I was grateful for being given a chance to work one -on-one with
my professor. This ROP experience gives one a glimpse of the
research a faculty member goes through on a daily basis. It also
gives one a chance to engage in work that is far more hands on
than other offered courses.”
Saima Ramzan
Lynn Snowden Assistant Dean, University of Toronto
Mississauga
“At each of the ROP fairs, I talk with students about their projects
and their experience. For all of them, it was a tremendously
positive experience, some saying they would do the course over and
over again, they enjoyed it so much. I am proud to be associated
with such a unique and transformative program .”
