Although Bunny Roland, of Traverse City, Mich.,
did not have an ideal distribution for her bid, she
opened the bidding at one notrump. West could not
be blamed for thinking he was about to get a top
result. His partner had bid at the two level, and his
hand could produce four tricks on its own.
West led the ace of his partner’s suit and continued with his remaining spade. Bunny won the king
and found the trump position by cashing the king.
She crossed to the ace of clubs and finessed the
queen of diamonds. When the king fell under the
ace, life was beginning to look rosy. She cashed the
king of clubs and crossed to the Jack of diamonds
and ruffed the 10 of clubs. When West followed suit,
the contract was made.
Bunny led one of her good diamonds, and West,
who was down to nothing but four trump, was
forced to ruff high. Bunny did not make the mistake
of over-ruffing — she sluffed the dummy’s last spade.
When West continued with a trump honor, Bunny
allowed him to win the trick. West was now forced
to lead away from his 10-8 of trump into dummy’s
ace and nine. Bunny lost only two trump tricks and
the ace of spades.
I think holding the West hand, most of us would
double this contract.
