Hoosac gets new classes
This year at Hoosac, there are
a few new classes that have been
added to the schedule, including:
garden design, dance, chemistry
2, power-point, and digital photography/computers. Funds from
the Proctor donation last June will
go toward the construction of an
observatory, as well as a meditation garden. The new garden design class, taught by Mr. Cochran,
will create and submit a design or
floor-plan for the land around the
observatory. The classes’ designs
could include a large open area
or a small enclosed one. The class
will not actually plant or build the
proposed space themselves, but
the designs that they come up
with will be used for the project.
The ground breaking began on
Thursday of this week.
In the digital photography/computers class, the students learn
how to take photos with a digital
camera using the ISO, f-stop, and
shutter speed settings. During

District Attorney Ken Kratz
apologized Friday for sending
personal texts to a domestic abuse
victim while prosecuting her former boyfriend, but said he won’t

Wisconsin Department of Justice officials said some of Kratz’s
texts “cross the line and can be
construed as sexual harassment.”
They cited a specific text that
refers to the woman as a “tall,
young, hot nymph,” and another
that says, “You are beautiful and
would make a great partner someday.”

FDA to decide on genetically engineered salmon
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will hold a hearing
Monday as it considers whether
to approve genetically engineered
salmon for human consumption.
If approved it would be the first
genetically modified animal permitted by the food safety agency.
A company, AquAdvantage Salmon, has injected growth hormones
into Atlantic salmon that enable
the fish to reach maturity in half
the normal growth time, 16 to 18
months, rather than 30 months.
The FDA in an analysis dated
Monday, wrote: “We therefore
conclude the food from AquAdvantage Salmon that is the subject
of this application is as safe as
food from conventional Atlantic
salmon and that there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from
the consumption of food from this
animal.”
But critics worry about the
possible health effects of eating fish containing the growth
hormone.”It’s impossible to talk
about the risks other than saying they haven’t been properly
assessed, other than process has
been rushed and we don’t know,”
said Wenonah Hauter, executive
director of Food and Water Watch.
She added that the FDA is a “very
stressed agency” with all the latest
recalls and outbreaks, that it “can’t
ensure the safety of the foods they
currently regulate.”
Hauter said that the FDA has
relied too heavily on information
provided by AquAdvantage and
that there should be a more extended time given to thoroughly
vet and discuss risks.
A final decision is expected in a
few weeks. As reported on CNN.

hoping to win it but not on the fist

Q: How do you like your new
dorm this year?
A: It’s pretty good. We got a
good group of guys in Dudley. It’s
been pretty fun so far.

Q: Did you go anywhere or do
anything interesting over the
summer?
A: No not really. We went down
to New Brannfells near Austin,
Texas and floated down the river
for a couple of days.
Q: How did you feel when you
found out you were student of
the week?
Q: What difficulties or advantages have you experienced now
that you are a prefect?
A: You’ve got to make sure
you’re a good example, so that
can be hard at times, but I do like
being a captain of a workjob. I
find that really nice.
Q: How are your new classes going?
A: They’re going pretty well. I’ve
got some hard ones so it’s going to
require a little more studying this
year than last.
A: I was actually very shocked.

Bed bugs are flat wingless
bloodsucking insects that infest
clothing stores, hotels, houses,
and of course, beds. Bed bugs
can go without eating for a year
and still survive. There have
been infestations in several major cities in 2010 that have made
stores and hotels close. The major
cities in order of their infection
severity are: New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cincinnati, Chicago, Denver, Columbus, Dayton,
Washington, D.C., Los Angeles,
Boston, Indianapolis, Louisville,
Cleveland, and Minneapolis.
If you were planning on visiting one of these places during the
long weekend or on a vacation,
you may want to change your
plans or take precautions. In New
York City, the popular retail stores
Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister,
and Victoria’s Secret were closed
down because of bed bugs. If you
do visit one of these places, you

could potentially bring the bed
bugs back home or to school with
you. If you think you have bedbugs talk to Nurse Klein about it.
“The bites look like flee or mosquito bites. They are usually in a
cluster of bites because bed bugs
like warmth and when you wake
up and move around, they will bite
and run away,” said Nurse Klein.
If you think you have bed bugs
at school, first examine your room
for signs. Then, if you find evidence supporting that you do, tell
the nurse or a faculty member so
they can address the infected area
and prevent spreading. Bed Bugs
spread the most during travel. To
prevent getting bed bugs, research
where you will be staying to see if
they have had an outbreak. If they
did or currently do have bed bugs,
definitely find another place.
Bed bugs tend to be in hidden
places. If you go to a place where
there’s an outbreak, they can
transfer into your computer or luggage, and when you bring them to
other areas, you will be transporting the bugs and spreading them.
You must eradicate all bed bugs
because they can reproduce once
a month. Also, keep your place
clean. Don’t have clothes all over
the floor because then the bugs
have a place to hide under and reproduce.
At most public schools, you
might find student council or
student government. The members of these groups are elected
by the school’s student body. The
Hoosac version of student government is the prefect. Every year,
Mr. Lomuscio, headmaster of the
Hoosac School, chooses those
from the student body who, in
his opinion, show good character
to become prefects. “A prefect is
a student leader who assists the
faculty in the management of the
school,” Mr. Lomuscio said.
Among the prefects, there is a head
prefect called the senior prefect
who could be compared to the
student class president at a public
high school. Ian Richter, the senior prefect last year, graduated.
Mr. Lomuscio then chose Da Han
Han to become the new senior
prefect. “It’s really cool to be the
senior prefect, but there are a lot
of responsibilities,” Da Han said.
“The senior prefect sets a tone
for the other prefects and is the
school’s student leader. Prefects
must be role models for all the
other students and cannot get on
detention or visibly get into trou-

ble. If a prefect does something
wrong he could lose his title as a
prefect,” said Mr. Lomuscio.

Don’t Loose Your Head
Two men in Vietnam found an old detonator from the Vietnam war. It
had been rusted and had aged significantly due to weathering. One of
the men insisted that it could no longer work due to it’s age. The other
man disagreed, saying it was potentially dangerous. The first man was
so sure that he was right, that he put it in his mouth, and asked his
friend to plug the dangling wires into a 220-volt electrical outlet. 220
volts alone could kill you, but it was also way more than enough to
make the detonator explode, killing the man instantly. As reported on

The First Pregnant Man
Back in 2008, a man claimed to be pregnant, and shockingly was correct. However the story isn’t completely as it appears. No man has the
organs necessary to achieve pregnancy. This man however was born
a woman, and had undergone a sex change, but not long after he had
unknowingly become pregnant only several months before. A normal
transsexual operation would remove organs like the uterus, but fortunately for the baby, the woman decided to only have the breast and
hormonal surgery. Now legally declared a man, he was technically the
first man to become pregnant. As reported on alldeaf.com
Boy Drowns In His Own Bed
A 10-year-old boy drowned in his own bed, a whole hour after swimming in a pool. The mother explained that the boy was swimming in
the pool at their apartment, and after getting out he explained that he
was tired, so they let him take a nap. An adult checked on him an hour
later, to find white foam coming out of his mouth, as well as his tongue
sticking out, and his lips being blue. They called 911, and he died later
in the hospital. Doctors explained that he died from “asphyxiation by
drowning,” and that he must have inhaled water while swimming, and
it was still in his lungs when he took a nap. The doctor also explained
that this isn’t completely uncommon, and that sometimes people can
drown up to 72 hours later with absolutely no warning signs. The
mother explained that if one child can be saved because people learn
from her son, then it makes his death less unbearable. As reported on
