Mrs. Maria de la Cruz Mancias has been selling bicycles
and spare parts for over 10 years, also repairing them.
Throughout this time she has been doing very well, but
like all businesses sometimes there are difficulties, but
little by little her and her husband are coming out ahead.
They have a daughter who is studying at the university;
their business generates income enough to cover
household expenses and obligations. She needs a loan
to be able to move forward with her business.

St. Ratrick’s week 2005 included events such as a parade in
which beer was guzzled from the Shrine of the Unknown Catholic
Schoolgirl and a bonfire rolled down 18th Street; Rat Ride in which
C.H.V.N.K. 666 was treated to the sight of the Rat Patrol guzzling
syrup from the trash; Build Day in which two lovely ladies caught
fire and several pixies were readied for execution; Death Derby in
which a dragon, a cyborg, and a superhero entered a fountain from
which only one returned; and TV Smash in which several televisions
were made to pay for their crimes.

St. Ratrick was a legendary saint who drove all the snakes from
Ireland, leaving the country safe for rats. Every year, a huge parade
is held in Chicago to honor the many Irish immigrants who settled
here. But how can we forget that other immigrant to North America:
the Norway Rat? We celebrate the memory of St. Ratrick with a
parade of rat bikes.

enthusiasts. Our Sunday rides primarily are leisurely, social rides that range
from 15-35 miles with interesting and unusual themes and destinations. Our
Saturday midrange tours are longer (35-50 miles) and more challenging,
while our “roadies” rides satisfy the stronger riders with distances up to our
monthly 100-miler. Join us on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Wednesday evening of
the month for a 20-mile training ride, and on the 4th Wednesday evening
Get Acquainted ride. Off road trips, family rides, and overnight camping
tours complete the picture.
CCC offers rides every Saturday and Sunday from April through October,
as well as evening and weekday rides. Our rides vary in length from 15

All of its operations are funded through
the sale of bicycles at its storefront.
Working Bikes uses that money to
provide bicycles to charity organizations

In the countries to which Working
Bikes ships, a bicycle can often mean
the difference between work and
unemployment. The bicycle is the primary
means of vehicular transportation for the
majority of the population and is used
both for personal transportation and for
carrying cargo. Due to wage differences,
a bicycle worth $20 in Chicago can be
worth the equivalent of $1,000 in Africa.
Each year Working Bikes gives away over
5,000 bicycles locally and internationally.
It distributes about 500 bicycles and
wheelchairs in the Chicago area alone
to City programs, refugees, and day
camps.
Working Bikes desperately needs
volunteers to repair bicycles, prepare
and pack bikes for shipping overseas,
organize and help customers in the
Working Bikes Store, pick up donations,
network with other organizations, and
help spread the word. By volunteering
your time at Working Bikes you aid an
organization that is doing good work both
locally and internationally.
Working Bikes is now located at 2434
S. Western Ave. in Chicago. (Big red
brick two story building at the SW corner
of 24th Pl. and Western Ave.) Bicycle
sale hours are Wed. and Sat. 12-5 p.m.
Volunteer hours are Mon. and Tues. 5-9
