While this in itself may sound unimportant, the resulting benefits over traditional sensor boards are numerous. EPC's Opto-ASIC chip shown actual size M12 (12 mm) Connector Now Available Mounting Bracket and Protective Cover Keeping an Explosive Situation Under Control With EPC's Opto-ASIC Technology: You'll get a clean, reliable signal with greater immunity to electrical noise than traditional analog sensors. Missed and extra counts are virtually eliminated! Speed, reliability, and signal quality are all greatly increased! The potential for quadrature drift from exposure to time and temperature is virtually eliminated! Your encoder will have superior resistance to particulate contamination-related signal distortion. If dust does get into your optics, it's not as likely to cause a problem! Power consumption is reduced! EPC's Opto-ASIC chip provides all of these benefits, while reducing costs and space requirements. The chip is just 3.5mm x 4mm and replaces all of the standard components of a traditional sensor board, leaving plenty of room for enhanced features. EPC's Opto-ASIC chip eliminates the need for many board level components, leaving room for more features while improving performance. EPC's Opto-ASIC equipped Model 260, perhaps the most reliable encoder in the world, has a reliability rate of 99.95% - that's just .05% (or 1 in every 2000 units) returned for warranty service. It is reliability track records such as this which have allowed EPC to extend it's standard product warranty from an impressive two years to an industry-leading three years. The M12 (12 mm) connector is the connector of choice for many other motion control components, such as proximity sensors, and photoelectric switches. Until now, the use of the M12 had not been available as an encoder option. Using this new connector may allow you to reduce stocking requirements for cordsets and other similar components, since the M12 cordset used for your Accu-CoderTM may also be used for many of your other motion control components. Every Accu-Coder™ brand encoder is manufactured to EPC's exacting standards, and backed by EPC's exclusive 3-year standard product warranty, to ensure years of trouble free use. Powered by IMN™ TELL A FRIEND Thursday, December 18, 2003 HOME Issue 3 Mounting Bracket and Protective Cover New Accessories CONTENTS Why You Need EPC's Opto-ASIC Technology M12 (12 mm) Connector Now Available Mounting Bracket and Protective Cover Keeping an Explosive Situation Under Control The Uni-Bracket allows for the tethering of the encoder (Models 260 & 702) to any 4.5" C-Face (5.875" BC mounting holes) and can be employed with or without the Uni-Cover. The non-conductive bushing provides an electrical isolation barrier, negating the potential for Electro Static Discharge and resultant encoder bearing damage. The bushing can also be slid in or out of the forked bracket to allow for mounting to comparably sized IEC C-faced or other non-NEMA dimensioned motors. Even though all EPC encoders are designed and built to robust specifications, and utilize all-metal parts, a protective cover is often considered a cheap insurance policy against physical abuse. The all-metal Uni-Cover provides this protection. Designed to allow for the fitting of most EPC thru or hollow bore encoders, the Uni-Cover matches up with the 5.875" bolt pattern found on the NEMA 4.5" AK C-face mounts. It is slotted to accommodate either the Uni-Bracket or the nonconductive flex of the Models 775 and 776, along with either cable gland or body mounted connector encoder styles. Adaptable encoders include; Model 260 Thru-Bore Requires Uni-Bracket for motor mounting. The most economical solution where the motor shaft is 0.625" (05 15mm) or less. For demanding performance Vector applications where high speed and frequency response is required (up to 8000rpm & 300Khz respectively). Model 702 Blind Hollow Bore Requires Uni-Bracket for motor mounting. Where a body-mounted connector is desired and motor shaft diameters do not exceed 0.625" (or 15mm). Model 775 Does NOT require Uni-Bracket. 775 "Style A" flex option allows for direct motor mounting where shaft diameters exceed 0.625" (up to 1.375" or 35mm). Model 776 Does NOT require Uni-Bracket. 776 "Style A" flex option allows for direct motor mounting where shaft diameters exceed 1.375" (up to 1.875" or 48mm). Today, many motor manufacturers provide a "Standard Mechanical Interface" on their Vector and Inverter Duty products, such as a 4.5" or 8.5" C-face, but not always. On occasion, the scope of your project requires that you attempt to retrofit an encoder to an older motor so as to interface with the new drive you have selected. Whatever the case, with EPC's complete family of "easy, anyone can mount" motor to encoder offerings, a technically and commercially viable solution can usually be selected and applied. Please also see EPC's Models 770 & 771 C-face encoders for additional motor-to-encoder solution alternatives. Powered by IMN™ TELL A FRIEND Thursday, December 18, 2003 HOME Issue 3 Keeping an Explosive Situation Under Control Application Success Story EPC’s one-millionth encoder, a 713-HD10, is being installed on a specialized truck that mixes and delivers explosives. The company that manufactures these trucks, Ground Force, delivers them to mining operations all over the world. They are the major supplier of this type of equipment for several of the world’s largest copper and gold mines, located in Indonesia and South America. CONTENTS Why You Need EPC's Opto-ASIC Technology M12 (12 mm) Connector Now Available Mounting Bracket and Protective Cover Keeping an Explosive Situation Under Control Ground Force uses EPC encoders to measure the rotation of pump shafts and of augers. The pumps deliver wet ingredients, while the augers deliver the dry ingredients. Ground Force uses a straightforward sprocket and ladder chain system to drive the encoders from these shafts and augers. The encoders are 200 pulse-per-revolution (ppr) incremental units and their output is fed to a scaling system that converts the pulses to the rate at which pounds or kilos of mixed product are being delivered by the truck. A typical truck will use up to four encoders, one for each type of component. The scaled outputs from each encoder are, in turn, fed to a processor that monitors the various outputs to make sure that the final mixture is, and remains, optimal. Ground Force ANFO/EMULSION Mix & Delivery Vehicle This same basic system has been used by Ground Force for more than fifteen years. It has proven to be so reliable that no alternative design has been found that satisfies their requirements. In fact, to quote Alex Ritter, Chief Engineer, “At this point in time, we are not even thinking about searching for an alternative system, or about changing the design.” This is strong testimony to the ruggedness and reliability of EPC’s encoders, especially given the environment in which they live in this application. Not only are they mounted on the outside of the trucks, where they have to withstand all types of weather conditions, (mud, dust, and rough treatment, typical in a mine) but they must be resistant to the caustic and corrosive elements that make up the explosive mixture. These components will rapidly find any weaknesses in an encoder. As further evidence of Ground Force’s loyalty, and of their satisfaction, consider the fact that they have purchased more than 1,000 encoders from EPC since 1985, and that EPC is their only encoder supplier. This application very dramatically illustrates the quality, durability, and longevity of EPC encoders. It also illustrates one of EPC’s most important guiding principals – we are not just interested in selling products, we are interested in forging long term business relationships.
