The Role of the Intensive Support Service within the Complex Health Needs Service
The main role of the Intensive Support Service is to provide intensive, short term support to carers who support people who have severe challenging behaviour, mental health
difficulties or forensic issues.
The following illustrates the variety of interventions undertaken:












Carrying out behavioural assessments by completing a functional analysis of the person’s behaviour.
Direct observations of someone’s behaviour which may be in their home or community setting.
Analysing data collected by carers and using that information to develop appropriate strategies.
Developing, implementing and reviewing positive behaviour plans.
Providing support and advice to staff teams to enable them to develop and review their risk assessments.
Ensuing crisis plans are in place and responding when able.
When a MHA (Mental Health Assessment) is required, to support the Learning Difficulties (LD) Psychiatrist and AMP (Approved Mental Health Practitioner) in
the process by providing information on past history and behaviours leading up to the assessment.
Supporting admissions to Assessment and Treatment Units.
Monitoring medication and new changes for effectiveness and any possible side effects.
Providing Social Workers and Support Service Coordinators in the Locality Teams with support and advice around behaviour issues in relation to individual
care packages and the suitability of placements.
Advice and support for those clients with complex and challenging behaviours who need to attend specialist health appointments.
Providing PBM (Positive Behaviour Management) BILD accredited training to staff from health and social services who work in LD services in Bath and North
East Somerset.
Providing bespoke challenging behaviour and autism training to staff teams as needed.
