Rising First Graders Why We Ask Our Students to Read

Rising First Graders
Why We Ask Our Students to Read
over the Summer
One of the goals of summer independent reading at NansemondSuffolk Academy is to create an opportunity for students to make
reading a rich, positive and lifelong enjoyable experience. To
achieve this goal, students must continue the routine of daily
reading. We believe students should be encouraged to follow their
interests and passions in materials they read.
For rising first through third graders, no formal assignments are
given. Suggested titles are provided but not specifically required.
We ask that the children read between twenty and thirty minutes
per day and keep a reading log to present to their teacher in
August.
Rising fourth and fifth graders students are assigned one book: No
Talking by Andrew Clements(ISBN 10: 1-4169-0983-4) Lower
School Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Carol Johnson will focus her first
few guidance lessons and related activities around the content of
this book.
In addition, these students are encouraged to self-select titles of
interest to read for pleasure reading daily. This may include
magazines, newspapers as well as books. Students are asked to
keep a reading log and present it to their teacher in August.
Parents are encouraged to read to their children as
much as possible over the summer. Shared reading
is one of the best preparations for independent
reading.
