Lakehoma Ledger SuperheroHeadquarters:

October 2014
Lakehoma Ledger
SuperheroHeadquarters:
We are gearing up for a month full of fun activities! A few reminders from the office: our tardy bell rings at 7:40am. Honor
Choir starts this month. Look for the following fun activities at the end of the month: PTA’s Rock the Block and Red Ribbon
Week. Oct. 2nd is Custodian Appreciation Day! Please bring a treat or a thank you note to show them how much we
appreciate them!
Kindergarten:
We’re working on identifying letters of the alphabet, letter
sounds and sight words. We’re practicing counting 20 objects,
and identifying numbers 0-20. We just finished our fall
testing! Meeting benchmark is a “Big Deal”, so be sure to
practice naming the letters and letters sounds, and work on
recognizing and naming numbers 0-20! We are going to the TG
Farms Pumpkin Patch on October 15th! Permission slips
need to be returned ASAP! If you can go, please tell
your child’s teacher! Thank you for attending your
Parent/Teacher Conference! Keep the Progress Report
you received for future reference. Please give your child plenty
of opportunity to do writing activities…tracing and writing
letters and numbers as you say them. Practice writing
names…first letter only upper case. These are report card
skills. The Snack Box is working great! Thank you so much for
providing those snacks! We appreciate our parents!!!
First:
In October we will be learning about pumpkins,
bats, skeletons, and bones. Our first graders are
learning lots of short vowel words and sight words. Thanks to
our students’ parents for continuing to read daily with our
students for at least 20 minutes, practicing sight words and
addition facts (sums to 10), and returning homework pages
promptly. Parents please check the daily weather forecast to see
if your child needs to bring a jacket (marked with his/her
name). Thanks, parents, for your help and support!
Second:
Second Grade students are excited to be working on a music
program with Mrs. McDonald which will be presented on
Thursday, October 23. Math homework has been going home for
a few weeks now, so be sure to help your child with that each
evening, as well as reading with your child and helping
your child practice math facts. A school wide theme
this year is for students to be “Ready, Responsible,
and Respectful” – chances are: you are seeing this
behavior at home!
Third:
The third grade teachers would like to thank all the parents who
attended parent/teacher conferences. Please remember to have
your child read 20 minutes every night and practice math facts
for ten minutes. Also, don’t forget to have them record it on
their monthly log.
Fourth:
Fourth grade teachers would like to thank parents for attending
conferences last week. A few reminders to help your
child: Study math facts each night. Math fact recall is critical
to success as we start to add, subtract and multiply larger
numbers. Please set aside at least 20 minutes each night for
reading. Also students should have their reading log signed each
night. The Lakehoma Science Fair is November 13th. We will
send home information soon.
Specials:
We are finishing up soccer and moving on to the
archery. Third and fourth graders will learn archery
safety, parts of the bow and the arrow, and how to
shoot at a target. Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd will be playing
different games that involve hitting a target with balls, bean
bags, noodles, etc. Proper footwear reminder: please make sure
that your child has tennis shoes for the days they come to
P.E. If they don’t wear tennis shoes to school, please send a pair
in their backpack. If you or your child is unsure if they have it
that day, send a pair of tennis shoes in their bag just in
case. Lakehoma 2nd graders will be performing, “Prime Time
Nursery Rhymes”, on Thursday, October 23, at 9:00 a.m. and
1:00 p.m. It’s a good time to read up on your nursery rhymes, so
you will recognize them. Our 3rd graders will be performing
“Toys” on December 4. Fourth graders are working hard on their
recorders and are trying for the black belt in Recorder
Karate. Most have a white belt, and a few have yellow belts. Our
next belt is Orange, and we have a few who have that
belt. Practice, Practice, Practice!!!
Library:
Our September Book Fair was a great success. Thank you to all
of the parent volunteers who worked at the book fair. We
appreciate all that our parents do for Lakehoma. Also, we
extend a big thank you to all of the students, parents, and school
personnel who purchased from the book fair. Your generosity is
appreciated. The proceeds for this book fair will go toward new
technology for our school and new books. Remember, you can be a
hero – read to your child. Happy Reading!
Nurse’s Station:
Enterovirus D68: Symptoms are fever, runny nose, sneezing,
cough, body & muscle aches. Difficulty breathing & wheezing are
more common in kids with asthma or history of wheezing. The
virus is spread via respiratory such as when an infected
person coughs, sneezes, or touches contaminated
surfaces. Hand washing is so very important for
prevention (especially after using the restroom & before
touching your eyes, nose, or mouth & before eating/drinking)!!!
Student Services:
Reading and Writing – Looking for a way to help your child
improve reading and writing skills? Do you have a family member
with email? Have your child start sending email to your
family. Your child will improve reading skills, writing skills and
typing skills. PLUS your child will feel closer to that family
member. If your family does not have access to a computer, try
leaving handwritten notes for your child to read.
