Seatbelts Save Lives – after a tyre blow out The crash car is a real example of how seatbelts do save lives. This vehicle was travelling between Katherine and Darwin in September last year when a tyre blew, causing the vehicle to roll several times. Sadly there was one fatality, however three other occupants survived. TIO are very grateful to Tennille Foley and her family for allowing TIO to use the vehicle wreck to promote road safety. TIO asks Territorians to question WHY With the risk of being killed on Territory Roads three times greater than anywhere else in Australia, road safety in the NT must be urgently addressed. There is no quick solution however, TIO is bringing attention to this issue through our WHY Road Safety campaign. TIO began the campaign in October as part of our commitment to road safety as the manager of the Motor Accident Compensation Scheme. The powerful campaign concentrates on the impacts of road deaths on families, friends, workmates and other individuals. The theme for the campaign “WHY.” delivers a powerful message, mainly because in many cases there are no answers to the question for those left behind. A major component of the WHY campaign is the crash car (pictured). The aim of the crash car is to draw attention to the tragic consequences of road accidents and the life long impact of losing friends and family. The vehicle will be displayed at various locations throughout Darwin and Palmerston reminding people to buckle up, slow down and not to drink drive. We do not want another family to lose a father, mother, son or daughter. Richard Harding, CEO emphasises that Road Safety is everybody’s responsibility NT Road Safety Statistics • 71 people have died on Territory roads this year. This is 14 more deaths than this time last year. • One person dies and nine are seriously injured on Territory roads each week. • Territory drivers are three times more likely to be killed than drivers anywhere else in Australia. NT Emergency services at Sober Bob Launch Statistics sourced from www.roadsafety.nt.gov.au Road Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility TIO are grateful to all the people, businesses and community groups involved in helping us raise awareness to promote road safety messages. In particular, TIO would like to thank NT Clubs, NT Police, NT Emergency services, St John Ambulance, Dial-a-driver, Hot 100 and the NT Government for encouraging Territorians to stay safe on the roads. 1 TIO TODAY Issue 16, January 2009 National ATM Fee Reform is coming From March 2009, when you use another bank’s ATM, the other bank will be entitled to directly charge you at the time of the transaction. It is up to each bank to decide on how much they will charge for this service and you will be advised of the fee amount before you proceed with the transaction. If you proceed, the fee will be added to the amount of your transaction. If you cancel the transaction no charges will apply. ATM Direct Charging is an industry wide reform and is being introduced in consultation with the Reserve Bank to promote competition in ATM services, increasing choice to consumers and improving transparency. More information about ATM Direct Charging will be available in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please call TIO. New Premium Home Loan Package – premium savings!
