parenting publication SEPTEMBER 2014 VOL 9 NO. 9 FREE i’m lovin’ it ® Introduce your child to the world of sports Family fun card games • The science of dads Children in sports and competitive parents ADVERTORIAL 1. Have a plan Children look forward to their big day all year. Yet as a busy parent, you don’t usually start thinking about it until perhaps a week or two before. I always put a reminder in my diary two months out from the party and spend a few hours on that day planning things. Making a to-do list, work out who you’re inviting and most importantly, the theme. It never ceases to amaze me how hectic a 3-year old’s social schedule can be! My top tips for your next kids’ party Birthdays can be great fun for kids, but a great deal of work for the parents. As a former teacher and mum of three, I’ve arranged more than my fair share of parties for little ones. And I’ve learnt a few tips and tricks that will save you time, money and help you enjoy the party as much as your kids. Chances are that within your group of friends, mother’s group, daycare or school groups, someone will have a birthday on or around the same day as your little one. The earlier you can get your invitations or save the date cards out, the sooner you’ll know how many you’re catering for, and the less likely you are to find people are pre-booked. You can either customise one of the templates on Avery’s free Design and Print software or make your own design from scratch. Better still, you can design and print them all from your own computer – so it needn’t break the piggy bank either. 4. Always have spares 2. I don’t think I’ve ever had a party where at least one person didn’t turn up unexpectedly. One of the great things about making your own personalised decorations is that it’s easy to print off a few more so that no-one feels left out on the day. Sneaking a few extra gift bags into the pile while everyone’s back was turned has saved me from embarrassment more times than I care to remember. 5. Start the party early Just because the party doesn’t start ‘til 3pm, for example, doesn’t mean you can’t start the set-up earlier. Invitations and Save The Date Cards 3. Get creative Designing and printing the decorations is now quicker and easier than you’d imagine. You’re obviously going to want to spend as much time with your birthday boy or girl on their special day as possible. It helps to split the jobs up and do a couple a day in the lead up, so the day itself is manageable. (For instance, you’ll obviously need to leave the food preparation until the last minute, but you can prepare the Avery placecards you’ll be using to label the food anytime.) And don’t forget to get the rest of the family involved. They’ll enjoy getting involved … and it takes the pressure off you. You’ll find a few more tips and hints on my online video – averyproducts.com.au/kidsparties You can also see how easy the Avery Celebrations and Events range made my last party. Who knows, it may also inspire thoughts for your next kid’s party. Believe me, it’s worth the effort just to see the look on your child’s face when the party they’ve been dreaming of becomes a reality. Looking for a fun activity for your family to enjoy together? they simply wouldn’t in front of a TV or computer. Forget about paying for expensive movie tickets or video games – the perfect thing may already be lying around your house in a small cardboard box. And if it’s not, you can buy it for less than popcorn at the movie theatre. And if you’re worried about your kids being too consumed with today’s digital-centric world, a good-oldfashioned card game is a fantastic activity for them to enjoy gathered around the dinner table, minus screens and social media of all kind. You can use the humble deck of cards to play dozens of different card games suitable for the entire family. A family card game is filled with fun and lighthearted competition that will help your kids create long-lasting family memories that Crazy Eights Ages 5+ • Players 2 to 4 Of course, you don’t have to play just at the table. Indoors, outdoors, or in the car broke down during a camping trip, card games are so portable they can be played just about anywhere. Also, on stormy nights when electricity goes out, playing an old fashioned card game by candlelight is a great way to pass the time long after gadget batteries go dead. games that offer strategic challenge for teens and adults. Most importantly, card games are great fun for kids. Younger players enjoy learning the unique rules and personality of each game, as well as the excitement of competing with grownups. Along the way, card games help kids learn counting, strategy, logic skills, and good sportsmanship. So, here’s the run-down on four classic card games for your next family game night. Keep in mind, these game rules are just a starting point: feel free to mix things up by changing rules to make your own game variants. Meanwhile, there are plenty of card Go Fish Ages 6+ • Players 2+ Ages 7+ • Players: 2 to 7 The dealer gives each player a hand of cards; seven cards for games with two or three players, and five cards in games with four or more people. Lay the rest of the deck face down in a stack, then flip over the top card and lay to the side to make the “discard pile.” Separate the remaining cards into a pile facedown, this becomes the “pool.” The player to the left of the dealer becomes the “requester.” The requester asks the person on their left for cards that match their hand. First, deal a hand to each player. With 2 players, each player gets ten cards, 3-4 players seven cards, and with 4-6 players six cards. Remaining cards are placed in a stack to form the “stock pile.” Take the top card of the stock pile and lay it to the side; this is the “discard pile.” When the player gets a suitable card, they place it in the discard pile, and the next player must play a card of the same suit or number as the new top card in the pile. Eights are “wild”, so they can be used to match any suit or number. If a player uses an eight, the next player has to match the card underneath the eight just used. Alternatively, when a player uses an eight, they pick what suit and number must now be matched. The game continues until a player uses up all of the cards in their hand and becomes the winner. If the draw pile is depleted, the discard pile can be used instead. Have fun and make it interesting for everyone! by CJ Myers Rummy The dealer gives each player a set of cards: seven for a two-player game and five in a game with 3 or more players. The first player has to play a card of the same suit or number as the card in the discard pile. If the player doesn’t have a suitable card, they have to drawcards until they get one. From the youngest members of your family to the oldest, there’s sure to be a card game that appeals to everyone. For instance, a requester who had a ten of diamonds might ask for a ten of spades, or a requester with two queens might ask for another queen. If the other player has the cards the requester asked for, they must hand them over. The requester can then continue to request additional cards. This continues until the other player doesn’t have the cards the requester wants. When this happens, the other player tells to the requester “go fish.” The requester then has to draw a card from the pool. When a player gets all four cards of a set (such as four fives or four kings), they lay the set face up on the table. The winner is the first person who has no cards left and only has completed sets. Next, players organise the matching cards and runs in their hand, making sure their cards stay hidden. A run is a series of three or more consecutive cards in a suit, such as a 5, 6 and 7 of spades. Going left of the dealer, players take a card from either the stock pile or discard pile. If they have a meld, which is either a run or set of three or four of a kind, they lay it on the table face up. The player then must take a card out of their hand and place it face up in the discard pile. In addition, the player can also take a card in their hand, or a card they draw, and place it on one of their existing melds if the card matches. To do this, the card must be in the same set, for example putting a fourth king card in meld with three kings, or fit the consecutive order of a run, such as putting a four of spades into meld with five, six, and seven of spades. The winner is the first player to run out of cards. When this happens, the round ends: there are five rounds in a typical game. Old Maid Ages 6+ • Players: 3+ To start, remove one queen, leaving two queens of one colour and one queen of the other colour. The odd card is the “old maid.” Then, everyone is dealt a hand of cards (it’s okay if one player has more than others). Keeping their deck hidden, each player goes through and picks out any pairs, and lays the matching pair face up on the table. If there are three cards of same suit or number, players keep the spare card in their hand, but if there are two pairs, both pairs are put down. Going left from the dealer, each player presents their hand to the player to their left, who selects a random card. If that new card creates a pair, the player puts down the pair. If the card doesn’t create a match, the player keeps the card. This continues until all cards have been put down, except the old maid. The player with the old maid at the end of the game loses the match. The Science of Dads Why Fatherhood matters now more than ever before For decades, it was assumed that the single most important bonding experience in a child’s life was that between them and their mother. And while nobody is arguing the absolute importance of the mother-child bond, recent research is pointing towards another, equally vital, relationship: the one between a child and their father. According to sources like Washington, D.C’s Pew Research Center and the University of Connecticut’s Center for the Study of Interpersonal Acceptance and Rejection, not only does a father’s role in their child’s life have a direct effect on the child’s development and self confidence, but often that effect is just as great as their mother’s influence. In fact, kids that feel rejected or unloved by their father figures have just as much (and sometimes even more) likelihood of developing lower self-esteem, negative outlooks, feelings of inadequacy, depression, behavioural problems, depression and substance abuse. Of course then, the reverse also holds equally true. Kids who know that they are loved and accepted by their father face their future with a better overall world view and higher self esteem. What’s more, this positive effect has very little to do with biology. In fact, regular interaction with step fathers, father figures, and other male role models all have the same positive effects on a young person’s development and identity. So what’s the reason why now, more than ever before, a father’s influence matters so much in the life of a child? Auth horrita atiive e Parren ntin ng A big part of the reason why fathers have such a huge impact on the lives of their kids might be traced back to something called authoritative parenting. In short, mothers tend to be generally more focused on nurturing and comforting, leaving the perfect opening for a father to step in and create rules, boundaries, and expectations. Because children are so observant, they will pick up on these differences in parenting styles. Bein ng a Pre ese ent, Auth horittattivve Fatthe er Luckily for dads, we now know that biology is willing to lend a helping hand when it comes to becoming a good father. Oxytocin, often referred to as the love hormone, is released when a man holds their child. Oxytocin increases feelings of love and affection, and is the same hormone released in new mothers as they breast feed. This flood of oxytocin boosts the bonding experience between parent and child, and leads to a natural inclination to protect and lead. the simple act of playing or laughing with your children will boost oxytocin levels, as well as lowering the levels of testosterone in the male body. For this reason alone, spending quality time with your young ones is a step in the right direction. It doesn’t matter what you’re actually doing – simple time together playing a board game is equally as effective as an afternoon spent at an expensive amusement park. In the end, simply being available when your child needs or wants you is enough to help increase their chances at a successful future and positive self-image. Even when your child is no longer an infant, The authoritative parenting style favoured by most fathers is typically characterised by a balance of love, affection, and warmth with accountability and adherence to rules, combined with age-appropriate autonomy. What’s more, dads who display this authoritative parenting technique seem to instill a greater tendency for persistence and perseverance in their children. In fact, a 2014 study published at BYU shows that teens whose fathers held an active role in their lives were much more persistent than those raised with no father figure in their lives. A perseverant personality has, in turn, been directly correlated with a higher likelihood of finishing high school and further education. In the BehaviouralReading program developed in our clinic we are having great success by focussing on a slightly different approach than is mainstream and we would like to share a few ideas that you can try at home. Spell out loud the first two or three letters then pause again. The extra letters spoken will have activated more of the brain ‘compartments’ and the extra pause will allow the brain to assemble its thoughts without any stress or rush. Spelling and Memory Spelling and memory are quite difficult for some children, but if we consider how our brains function, then there are a few tricks that will make learning that much easier. This pause allows the brain to search for an answer in a low stress manner. Low stress for our thinking brain is very important. Trick #3 Trick #4 Keep spelling the word, but try and do it in chunks or groups of letters that you may know or be able to hear. Our brain naturally assembles information into related groups, so by spelling big words like ‘pathology’ our brain finds it easier to work with two chunks of ‘path’ and ‘ology’. When asked to spell a word, repeat the word out loud before attempting to spell it. We do this because our brain has many ‘compartments’ and the more that we can switch on for the spelling task the easier it is to spell. Boppin’ Babies AK-0913RG [email protected] www.boppinbabies.com.au ◆ Here are three suggestions: 1. Assist children to become people of resilience, with the ability to risk take, get up when they fall and to not fear failure. Failure is simply a signpost pointing in another direction. 2. Provide exposure to positive role models. Children who have heroes with positive values can be influenced for a lifetime. 3. Children need to experience success, something that they have worked for, in order to build a strong, sustainable self-esteem. This alone goes a long way to prevent destructive behaviours in later life. When parents are asked as to what they desire for their children, a common response is – “To grow into happy, fulfilled individuals.” It seems simple, but there are many obstacles along the way that can cause derailing of parent’s best intentions. We’re a country surrounded by over 35,000 kilometres of natural coastline and boast the world’s highest pool ownership per capita, at 1.2 million of them … it’s no wonder, Aussie kids are born water babies! However, while swimming may be in our DNA, possessing strong, water safety skills, is not an immediate ability; it requires on-going education and practice, from a young age. Accidental childhood drowning claims the greatest number of young lives than any other trauma. One quarter of children 2. Be Secure: Keep fences and gates locked up tight. Pool fences and gates need to be regularly inspected, maintained and meet government requirements. Objects and potential climbing aids like pot plants and chairs, need to be removed. 3. Be Confident: Learn to swim, and how to get to safety. Practicing water safety skills provides another layer of protection, but should never be substituted for proper supervision and barriers. 4. Be Prepared: Always have a plan in case of emergency. Check the pool and other waterways first if a child is missing, then inspect bedrooms, cupboards etc. Ensure your resuscitation skills are up to date, and permanently display at least one resuscitation, or CPR Chart in the pool area. admitted to hospital following a non-fatal drowning, will be left with a brain injury resulting in lifelong disabilities. In 2012/2013, 40 children between the ages of zero and 14, drowned in Australian waterways. But industry experts, Swim Australia, insist drowning can be prevented. Swim Australia are the leaders in learn-toswim and water safety – they’re the parent body to over 600 registered swim schools across the country. By applying Swim Australia’s ‘Layers of Protection’ philosophy, they claim drowning incidents can be avoided, simply by following four easy steps: 1. Be Aware: Don’t let the kids out of your sight. This is fundamental, and should be performed by a responsible adult. All non-swimmers and children under five, must be supervised within arm’s reach. By applying the four layers together, the philosophy works that if one layer fails, the remaining active layers will kick in, and potentially save that child’s life. For example, if supervision lapses, then the barriers will prevent pool access; if the barriers are down, then water skills should help that child, should they fall in etc. “These simple Layers should be religiously applied throughout the year, and around any water hazard – oceans, streams, pools, dams, bath tubs, bird baths – because drowning can happen any time, any where, and in any season,” Swim Australia CEO, Ross Gage said. “Learning, and knowing how to swim, is the most wonderful gift any parent can offer their child. “As children progress through each swimming level, skills learned can strengthen the bond between parent and child, and potentially enhance a child’s concentration, behaviour, confidence and physical coordination as they develop new abilities,” Mr Gage added. “For a long time, we’ve understood the benefits of swimming – physically, emotionally, socially – but we are very excited to finally see the facts in black and white … swimming kids, are smarter kids,” confirmed Swim Australia’s, Ross Gage. But teaching your kids to swim, isn’t just a smart decision … now, world first research has proven, regular and ongoing pool practice from a young age, can actually make kids ‘smarter’. The four-year study, was performed by Griffith Institute for Educational Research, and partly funded by Swim Australia. The study surveyed the parents of 7000 children aged five years and under, from Australia, New Zealand and the US. Griffith lead researcher, Professor Robyn Jorgensen, said, many results had exceeded expectations, and showed swimming children had an advantage when starting school. So when can, or should, kids start swimming lessons – it’s a valid question. Swim Australia suggest, children can learn from as young as four months; enough time to allow a medical history to develop, the infant’s immune system to strengthen, and bonding to occur with the primary caretaker. After four months, lessons in a gentle and developmentally appropriate program can, and should be started right away. To avoid negative associations, children should never be forced into lessons, especially if they are genuinely afraid of the water. However, it is a necessary and potentially life saving skill, so should be an ability they learn as soon as possible, under the guidance of a qualified teacher and a swim school registered with Swim Australia. “Children who had learned how to swim from a young age, were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population, when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions,” Professor Jorgensen said. With over 600 Swim Australia Registered Swim Schools located across the nation, the easiest way to find your closest centre, is by jumping on to www.swimaustralia.org.au and clicking on the ‘Find Your Local Swim School’ tab. Swimming – it’s not just a life saving skill, it’s a skill for life! by Jasmin Forsyth www.aussiekids.net.au September 2014 11 Children in Sports and Competitive Parents Running from activity to activity can be time-consuming, and leave little time for actual play. Too many sports can also be taxing on a child’s developing body. Children sometimes feel pressured to play sports because their friends are doing it. Wellmeaning parents may also urge their child to play sports because they did when they were young. Playing sports can provide children with physical exercise and social interaction. But when parents and coaches are too competitive, young children can experience emotional and physical stress. Parents are signing kids up for sports at increasingly younger ages, and some children are playing several sports each year. It’s important for parents to realise that although playing a sport is fine, the child also needs time to just be a kid. Sometimes the best play for kids is using their imaginations and making up their own games. There’s nothing wrong with a young child playing sports, but when parents or coaches get overly competitive, it takes the fun out of the game. It’s only natural for parents to be proud and get excited when their little slugger hits a homerun, as long as they are not pressuring him to win, win, win. Kids feel stress just like adults do, and when a child feels he has to be the best to please his parents, he will undoubtedly become stressed. A stressed child may want to quit playing the sport, but is afraid to disappoint his parents. The stress he is feeling may be reflected in his behaviour. An outgoing child may become quiet and withdrawn. The parents may notice changes in his appetite or sleep patterns. If the child has a genuine interest in playing sports, then the parents should encourage him. However, parents should not push a child to play sports if he really isn’t interested or seems to only play to please his parents. Let your child try different activities to find his interests and talents. If he likes art or music, then encourage him to pursue those activities. He can still play sports too if he wants to. Some parents find it difficult to adjust to the fact that their child just doesn’t like sports, or doesn’t have the natural athletic ability they had hoped. Even if a child is a natural athlete, he should be able to enjoy the game and play to have fun. It’s nice to win, but winning shouldn’t be the sole focus for young children. They’ve got plenty of time to sharpen their skills and develop their athletic ability. Parents and coaches should also set a good example for little athletes by supporting all the children on a sports team, and not just their own child. They should also teach their child good sportsmanship by interacting positively with other teams. The right dose of competition can be healthy, but being too competitive can set kids up for failure. Children should be able to enjoy sports and have fun without being pressured. Enjoy the wins and remind young athletes that no one wins all the time. After all, there are many different sports out there, and chances are good that one of them will be the perfect fit. These days getting the kids away from the computer long enough to throw a ball around in the backyard can be quite a challenge. Even though the worlds of computers and technology can be very beneficial to young people, it is also important to get those kids interested in activities that are a bit more strenuous in nature. Getting kids involved in sports has a great many advantages, and it is a good idea for parents to at least consider organised sports for their offspring. Organised sports provides kids of all ages with a great many advantages and important life lessons, including the ability to work as part of a team and respect the opinions of others. These skills will of course be very important later in life, and sports are a great way to learn these important lessons in a fun and interesting way. Playing an organised sport is also a great way to develop muscle tone, lose weight, gain fitness and improve eye-hand coordination. These skills are of course vital to developing a well rounded and healthy body, not just for kids and teens but for adults as well. Even though organised sports and playing as part of a team is important, however, it is important for parents to resist the urge to push their reluctant children toward a sport that may not be right for them. It can be quite tempting for the father who was a top football star in high school or college to try to push his son into playing football, but it may be that football is not the right sport for the child. One great way to try out a lot of different sports quickly, easily and inexpensively is to enroll in a local athletic club or association. These clubs can be a great way for parents and children alike to try on several different sports in search of the perfect fit. Playing baseball one week, football the next week and soccer the week after that is a great way for kids to get a well rounded sports education, enjoy some healthy exercise, and find the perfect outlet for their own unique athletic talents. 8QIVW>QWTQV>QWTI /]Q\IZ5][QK<PMWZa P\\X"\]Q\QWVI[PKZWN\U][QKKWU BECOME A FOSTER CARER CHANGE A CHILD’S LIFE Life Without Barriers is currently seeking compassionate people willing to share their homes with children and young people who require their support and care. LWB9374 www.lwb.org.au www.aussiekids.net.au September 2014 13 Encourage a healthy, active lifestyle for kids With childhood obesity affecting many children, it is more important than ever for parents to help children develop an active lifestyle from a young age. Parents can play a valuable role in helping children form and maintain these habits in a variety of ways. By setting a good example and introducing children to a number of activities, parents can be a healthy role model for their kids. One of the best ways parents can help children develop an active lifestyle from a young age is by introducing them to a variety of activities. When children view going to sport practice as something fun rather than a chore, they are more likely to continue playing the sport all the way through high school. Parents themselves need to remember to be open to a variety of different sports for children to try. Forcing a child to play a sport simply because a parent played it will likely end in the child quitting. By keeping an open mind about what sports their children enjoy, parents can play a supportive role in their children’s activities. If the thought of a boy in gymnastics or a girl playing hockey is unsettling, parents should remind themselves of the health benefits, as well as all of the friends their children will make. It is also important for parents to teach by example if they want their children to make good decisions about their health. When children are young, parents should encourage family activities other than watching television together. Some good examples are backyard volleyball, tag, and games like Red Rover. Younger children will enjoy this time spent bonding with their parents, and it will instill the value of an active lifestyle. As children get older, they may be resistant to playing tag with their parents (or even being seen in public with them) but they will still learn from the examples set by their parents. And by going to children’s sporting events, parents can show their support for their kids even if they don’t like the sport. Children who are physically active and form healthy habits at a young age are more likely to carry on these habits throughout their lives. With an active and supportive helping hand from their parents, children will be more active and maintain good health through adulthood and beyond. AK-0312BV Often times, parents limit children to trying one or two sports, which gives children a limited number of choices to pursue. The more options parents give their children, the higher the possibility children will find an activity (or two!) that they love.
