The 3rd Annual Setting the Pace for Peace Domestic Violence Awareness
Walk was a success! We would like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors,
our dedicated volunteers and the more than 1,500 of you that came out and
walked in memory or in honor of a special person, in support of a friend, family
member or co-worker or to help us raise awareness about domestic violence.
Because of all of you, the walk raised more than $75,000 to help end abuse in
our community!
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR
WALK VOLUNTEERS
Thank you to the more than 125
volunteers who helped with check-in, face
painting, Family Fun Zone, water stations,
set-up, clean-up, balloon animals, music,
cheering on the walkers and more to
make our event the best one yet!
WHY WE WALK
“I walk because I have been
impacted by domestic violence
during my previous work as a
child victim advocate by seeing
first-hand how it affects the
children. To see a child crying
because they are confused why
they can’t be a happy family
pushes me to make change. I
walk because I currently work
with survivors of domestic and dating violence. I walk because I have lost
someone to the crime of domestic violence and walking honors her. I believe
bringing awareness and raising monies for families affected by domestic
abuse plays a great part in ending the cycle. Taking a stand and being a
part of the movement tells abusers and society we will not stand by and
watch any more. We will walk, speak out, advocate and make a difference. I
walk because everyone I come in contact with could be a victim of domestic
violence. They need to know that they and their children deserve peace and
that there is help available.” ~ LaTresa Henderson, Hubbard House volunteer
and team captain of team DefeatDV
“I walk in memory of a dear
friend, co-worker and a
great mother, Nicole Bush.
On Monday, May 30, 2011
(Memorial Day) Nicole and I
worked a half day together at
Ally Financial. She told me that
her estranged husband had
their boys for the weekend
and the holiday, so she would
probably hangout with some friends. Little did I know that Monday would
be my last day seeing or talking with her. Nicole was brutally murdered by
her estranged husband Tuesday, May 31, after he dropped the boys off at
school. Nicole may not be here with us physically, but we know she is still
with us in spirit.” ~ James Threatt, team captain of team Walking for Nicole

EXECUTIVE NOTES By Ellen Siler, Chief Executive Officer
YOU INSPIRED SUCCESS...
It was an awesome sight to see
more than 1,500 people, some with
their dogs along, come out for the
3rd Annual Hubbard House Setting
the Pace for Peace Domestic
Violence Awareness Walk.
Growing from 1,000 last year to
1,500 this year was more than we
anticipated and means we will be
moving to a larger venue next year,
but that is a nice problem to have. It says a lot when that
many people are willing to give up their Saturday morning
to show their support.
It meant more than you can know to the survivors who
were participating.
Several groups wore or designed their own shirts; some
with the face of a homicide victim they knew, which added
an extra poignancy to the day. To each of you who helped
make this event a success, whether you helped plan,
volunteered that day, walked, raised funds or encouraged
others to walk, I thank you.
I hope the event was as heartwarming and inspiring to
each of you as it was to me. I especially want to thank our
presenting sponsors Bank of America, Dr. Joan Huffman
and Nancy Taylor and our benefactor sponsors CSX and
Everbank. Thank you.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Volunteers serve a vital role at Hubbard House. Volunteers
contribute their time and energy, ideas and ideals. They
increase our visibility in the community, expand our capacity
to provide services, and send a strong message of caring to our
clients.
This volunteer spotlight focuses on Sharon Moran and
Barbara Mahar, who maintain the Hubbard House career closet
by collecting and organizing donations (clothes, shoes, bags,
accessories) and assist residents in picking out appropriate
outfits for court and/or job interviews.
Why did you decide to volunteer at Hubbard House?
Barbara: I feel that it is a way to give back in some small way.
While I was not physically abused, my mother was.
Sharon: My second husband was verbally abusive. I feel giving
back to this organization helps keep me grounded. There are
so many people that have become involved by giving time,
clothing and bags for the ladies - it is a great feeling to be able
to help in some small way.
What made you get connected with Hubbard House?
Barbara: Hubbard House put in a request at my work for toiletries

Sharon: When I

a clothing drive.
Barbara and I got
involved with that
clothing drive in
2006 and we both
have been active ever since.
What has your volunteer experience with Hubbard House
taught you?
Barbara: I’ve learned that things are not always as they seem,
and not to judge too quickly. I’ve also learned that most
everyone needs help at some time in their life.
Sharon: Things are not usually what they seem. So many times
I think I have it all figured out and what a surprise when I have
it all wrong. Keeping God first in my life and letting Him make
the plans is difficult for me but always works out for the good.

Employees from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s

in Hubbard House’s HARK program.
Novartis Pharmaceuticals presented a $1,500

Four-year-old Olivia, Tiny Miss Heart of the

Hubbard House and collected 109 items.
MOTHER’S DAY
Celebrated every year, Mother’s Day is an occasion when
individuals express the love and respect that they have for
their mother or a woman who has been a mother figure to
them. On Sunday, May 13, we anticipate that we will have
80 women and children living in our emergency shelter.
Moms living in shelter will most likely not be receiving
flowers, cards or trinkets but they will be provided the
best gifts of all, a day of peace instead of a day of violence,
and the hopes of a better future for themselves and their
children.
We are making a difference in our community. We are
saving lives. And, we are giving mothers the ability to break
