In fact, I was one of the first to write about the groundbreaking Harvard University study published in the Journal
of the American Medical Association back in 1994 that found
a link between eating foods rich in lutein and better eye health.
But I’m getting fed up with the way some supplement
companies are using lutein to fatten their profits. That’s because
I think what they’re doing is a disservice to consumers!
First they hype the heck out of lutein
for all it’s worth . . .
As soon as news stories broke about the benefits of lutein — a potent carotenoid found in marigold petals, spinach, and other
foods — some big-name multivitamin makers began plastering
the words “Now with lutein” on the front of their labels.
Why am I so steamed about this? Because it gives
consumers the idea that lutein is the ONLY nutrient you
need to take to protect your eyes.
Folks, nothing could be further from the truth! While taking
lutein provides significant support for your macula, lens, and
retina, what about the rest of your eyes? Just for starters, there’s
your cornea, sclera, and millions of tiny nerves and blood vessels
that need to stay healthy for your eyes to function at their best.
But that’s not all . . .
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

to fatten their profits!
Here’s the other problem that really rubs me the
wrong way. Some multivitamin makers engage in a
practice I call nutrient “dusting.” That’s where they
give you a fraction of the amount needed to actually
provide a benefit.

lutein for maximum eye health

Multiple studies — including that Harvard University
study I mentioned earlier — have found you need at least
6 and as much as 30 milligrams of lutein each day to see
results. Yet some multivitamin makers put in as little as
0.25 milligrams — or up to 99 times less!
•Maintain proper sugar
levels in eye tissues (lens
and cornea)
In fact, here’s a common trick used for listing lutein
potencies on multivitamin labels. Instead of showing it
in milligrams (mg), companies show it in micrograms
(mcg) to make it seem higher. Since a microgram is
equal to 1/1000th of a milligram, 250 mcg is equivalent
to 0.25 mg — or a measly one-fourth of a milligram.
Why do they scrimp so much and play these dirty
tricks? Because they want to cut costs while getting the
maximum sales boost from their marketing hype.
Meanwhile, you’re lulled into a false sense of security,
thinking you’re taking enough lutein and don’t need
anything more to protect and support your precious
vision.
But if you’re taking scant amounts of lutein and
nothing else, your eyes aren’t fully protected. In fact,
I’ve identified seven ways lutein FAILS to fully protect
the health of your eyes as you age!

lutein plays an important role in protecting your eyes, it

damage. Even if you wear sunglasses when you’re outdoors, your eyes may not be adequately protected from
both types of ultraviolet rays — UVA and UVB;
#4: Ability to focus on close objects — Do you find
you now have to hold a menu a few feet away from you
in order to read it? Your ability to focus on close objects
depends on the flexibility of the lens of your eyes, which
is gradually lost as you age;
#5: Strengthening of cells in retina — While lutein
helps protect your retina by fending off free radicals and
absorbing blue light (another type of harmful light), it
does nothing to strengthen the cells of your retina, which
simply start to wear out as you age;
#6: Glycation of eye tissues — As you age, your
eyes become vulnerable to glycation — a process in
which sugar molecules bind inappropriately to protein
