10. Enjoy the outdoors: Young people
should play golf because it is an opportunity
to spend a few hours in the fresh air. While
playing golf, kids and teens can experience
all types of fauna and flora.
9. Develop lifelong friendships: You
never know who you will meet on a golf
course, and interaction with others allows
young people to develop social skills.
8. Practice personal responsibility:
Sometimes the ball doesn’t always bounce
your way, but regardless of the outcome,
there is no blaming your teammates for
what happens.
7. Have a safe place to play: The golf
course is a safe place and facilitates mentoring relationships in a safe environment.
6. Manage your emotions: Golf closely
parallels real life as one experiences the
highs and lows of the game. This range of
experience, from birdies to triple bogeys,
rewards a young person’s ability to keep
each shot in perspective,
manage one’s emotions,
maintain a positive outlook, and focus on the
shot at hand.
5. Appreciate diversity: Golf is a game that
can be played for a lifetime by anyone regardless of age, gender,
ethnicity, size, or skill
level.
4. Prepare for business: Golf is a sport that
helps prepare kids and
teens for careers in business and other professional arenas.
3. Learn etiquette: Young people
should play golf because it is based on
characteristics that are missing in our society. Golf places an emphasis on etiquette. In golf there is no judge or
referee; instead, players govern themselves and fellow competitors.
2. Spend time with family: Golf is a
game that encourages family participation.
1. Wellness for life. With the youth
obesity epidemic in our country, golf is a
sport that helps young people get off the
couch. When you play golf walking the
golf course and carrying your bag, a 150pound person burns 350 calories and
walks more than 10,000 steps. From the national website of The First

Leave a Legacy to Impact Future Generations
Think about the
values that are important in your life. Who
instilled these values
in you? Do you want
to ensure those same
values are passed
along to others?
Charitable gift
planning ensures that
The First Tee of San
Joaquin can continue
to impact the next
generation of young people by providing educational programs that build character,
instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
A charitable bequest–a gift in your will–is either a percentage of your estate or a
stated dollar amount designated to The First Tee of San Joaquin. Many people,
including members of the TFTSJ board of directors, discover that a bequest is a
satisfying way for their legacy to impact generations to come.
The First Tee of San Joaquin will accept a charitable bequest in a will or testamentary trust. In addition to the traditional bequest designations, you may prefer to
gift a percentage of the “residue” or what remains after paying all inheritances,
debts and costs. Please seek the advice of an attorney when making this decision.
Bequests should read “San Joaquin Junior Golf Foundation, DBA The First Tee of
San Joaquin.” San Joaquin Summer Enrichment Program

Program enjoyed
The First Tee of
San Joaquin at
Micke Grove in
July. Volunteer
coaches, along
with SJ County
staff, served more
than 50 teenagers
over two weeks.
For many children, this was
their first exposure to a golf course or the game of golf. The county program director reported a very positive outcome. She sited an example of a child who was very
hesitant because he didn’t think of himself as athletic. This child also had very low
self-esteem. After three days of working with our supportive coaches, he discovered
golf was an activity he could do! This achieves the County’s and The First Tee’s
goal of encouraging kids to be more active and feel great about themselves. Respect

Coach Profile: Barbara Fichtner
I grew up in Southern California and loved playing any
sport I could. After I graduated from El Rancho High
School in the Whittier area, I attended UC Santa Barbara
and majored in education, including P.E. I met my husband, Dick, who also played sports at UCSB and then
went into coaching.
I first taught in North Hollywood, and Dick coached at
Occidental College. We had four children (three sons and
one daughter) and spent a lot of time in parks playing ball
to keep the kids busy. We moved to Stockton when Dick became the assistant basketball coach at Pacific. I taught P.E. at Lincoln High School and, along with a colleague, started the aerobics program for girls. I loved teaching the course.
In 1998 I was hired to start a girls golf team. I coached for 12 years and loved
the challenge. The teams were successful and won conference titles. We sent one
excellent golfer to State competition.
After retiring from coaching, I began helping with The First Tee. I have so enjoyed the experience of the Golf Fore Girls program on Tuesdays. The LPGA has a
wonderful program that supports girls interested in golf, and we have implemented
it along with The First Tee values.
We now have 11 grandchildren, so you can imagine how many sports activities
and games Dick and I attend!
The First Tee Golf Fore Girls Site Director, Sandy Albaugh, says, “Barbara’s
love for golf shows in her volunteer coaching with the girls on Tuesdays. She plays
golf at SGCC and recently won low gross in the second flight at the Stockton Invitational. Barbara plays team golf and couples golf. I appreciate that she is a real
golfer and teacher who shares her knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport.” Sponsor Pavilion

So This Fall, Jump In!
When you get here, you won’t need statistics to see the impact this program makes
in the lives of young people (and in our volunteers). We are grateful for all of our
volunteers who share their time and talents in a variety of capacities, but we are
always in need of coaches (especially female coaches)! Give us a call. See if this is
where you would like to spend nine gorgeous fall mornings. See if this is where you
would like to help shape the future and impact the lives of tomorrow’s adults. Responsibility

Look closely at these golfers listening hard to their coaches. What concentration!
Our goal is for participants to transfer the life skills they learn through TFTSJ (such
as respect and all-important listening skills, in this case) to other areas of their lives.
We want their success and confidence on the course to be a springboard to success
and confidence in other endeavors. The First Tee of San Joaquin - it’s working!
