Our internships are non-paid internships where the students receive college credit. Each intern received hands on experience in brainstorming promotional ideas to tie in sales and promotions for the stations. They also assisted in development of ideas for on-air contesting for promotions and programming. The interns learned to write copy, draft proposals for promotions and sales, as well as an understanding of promotional guidelines and rules we must follow. Throughout the course of the semester we track their improvements by relating back to their early work and comparing it with their most recent work. Other tasks include prize inventory and fulfillment on a daily basis. Date of station participation: (on date; from date to date) June 15-16, 2011 Participating employees: Laurie Kahn, Media Staffing Network, on behalf of Journal Broadcast Group Host/Sponsor of activity: Media Sales Institute/Howard University Brief description of activity and station participation: Media Staffing attended the Media Sales Institute (MSI) event held at Howard University for Howard University recent graduates. MSI is a ten-day, intense training program for graduating college or university seniors who are passionately interested in pursuing a career in media sales. The curriculum is designed to provide an entree into media sales for talented students of diverse backgrounds. At this event, Media Staffing viewed the graduates’ presentations on assigned scenarios where they represent a radio or TV stations, cable system or newspaper and do a presentation to a local client. Media Staffing also met with potential sales individuals to discuss opportunities at Journal Broadcast Group. Each individual was provided a list of openings and job descriptions and applications. Those interested in the opportunities were instructed to reach out to the station manager directly.
