VIRTUS TRAINING CLASS
Anyone working with or around
children in any Archdiocesan parish
or school must be VIRTUStrained. To help our staff and
volunteers be in compliance with
this requirement, we will offer the
a VIRTUS "Protecting God's
Children" training class on
Thursday, January 17, from 6:00 to
9:00 p.m., in the Parish Meeting Room.
Call Rhonda Storey, DRE, at 284-0020, ext. 225,
to register. If no answer, please leave your name
and number. If you do not receive a confirmation
call, please go to the class anyway. There is no fee
for attending.
THIRD ANNUAL ANNIVERSARY
OF FR. DAVID’S ORDINATION
All are invited to help us
celebrate the 3rd Annual
Anniversary of Fr. David’s
ordination to the priesthood. It
will be held next Sunday,
January 20, beginning with the Mass of
Thanksgiving at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception
in the Parish Hall.
Yes, Fr. David has been a priest
now for three years, and this
celebration has been a fabulous
community event. This may be
the last of his anniversary
celebrations for awhile, so please don’t miss it!
MONTHLY ST. JOSEPH DEVOTION MASS: The next St. Joseph
Mass will be this Tuesday, January 15, at 7:30 p.m. Take advantage of this
opportunity to seek the intercession of this powerful saint, beloved by Jesus and
Mary. It was St. Joseph who found a place for Mary to give birth to Jesus—and who
served as both Jesus’ and Mary’s provider and protector.
RESPECT LIFE MASS: The annual Requiem Mass for the Unborn will be held
on January 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels in
memory of all who have died from abortion in the past year. Women and men who
have experienced the pain and anguish of having had an abortion—or of being
involved in one—have found this annual Archdiocesan liturgy for the unborn to be a
source of hope and grace. Prior to the Mass, a Youth Rally will be held on the
Plaza beginning at 3:00 p.m.; more info on the rally can be found at www.rtllsc.org.
Please note that a discounted parking rate of $5 per car will be in effect for the
event; if traveling by Metro, use the Civic Center stop.
NEW BIBLE STUDY IN JANUARY On Wednesday,
January 30, “The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation,” will
begin. This 24-part Bible study will take you through the entire Bible.
You will learn how key people, places, and events in the Bible fit
together to reveal God’s Plan for humanity; see how the events in the
Old Testament are fulfilled in the New; and gain a greater appreciation
for the Scriptures heard during Mass. For more information or to
register, please contact Aurora Juarez at [email protected] or
688-9349.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY: Catherine Contreras, 213-435-3942 - RESPECT LIFE QUOTE: "Two
years ago in South Carolina, a pregnant woman who was doing crack cocaine miscarried. She
was eventually convicted of murder for killing her baby and is currently doing time. Just
think, if she had taken RU-486, the results would have been the same, except that no charges
would have been brought against her and she’d be a free woman. Let me see if I understand
this: If you kill your baby by accident using an illegal drug, it’s murder. But, if you kill the same baby on purpose
using a legal drug, it's called an abortion, so it’s OK." --Anonymous professor at the University of South Carolina

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
..."Water and blood
are a symbol of
baptism and the most
holy sacrament of the
Eucharist. Now the
Church is founded on
the spiritual renewal
by the bath of rebirth
and on the most holy
sacrament of the Eucharist, both of which have
their origin in the side of Christ. Therefore, God
built the Church from Christ’s side, just as He made
Eve from the side of Adam. Therefore, St. Paul
says, 'We are of His flesh and of His bones.'"
--St. John Chrysostom (344-407)

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN: “DID YOU KNOW?”
Are you prepared for the “Big One”? - Are you and
your kids prepared for the next earthquake? Think
about a communications plan for your family. Choose
someone who does not live with you (preferably an
out-of-town relative or friend) whom you and other
family members can contact to check on each other in
the event that you are separated during a disaster.
Carry that person’s contact information in your purse
or wallet. Make sure children know their last name,
phone number, address, and number for the out-oftown contact person. Make sure every member of your
family knows an alternate route home. If family
members can’t get home, designate a meeting place.
For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at
(213) 637-7650.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION—Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some
folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings or think you were Cleopatra in a
previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, it
represents the clearest manifestation of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the
Gospel is the Prologue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our
humanity precisely in His baptism. At any rate, the Baptism of Jesus is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt
sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of
water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile and reserved it in honor. St. John Chrysostom wrote of people
in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels since “today there is a blessing on the
water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one
another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time.
