Changes in the mass… again?
WE BOW DURING THE CREED As we proclaim the
words of the Creed “by the power of the Holy Spirit, he
was born of the Virgin Mary and became man” we will
all bow, expressing our profound gratitude and awe for
Christ becoming a human being. The importance of this
statement calls in us a response that needs to be
embodied. As St. Paul wrote to the Philippians, “at the
name of Jesus every knee must bend,” thus, as we
contemplate the Incarnation, we now humbly bow as we
pray these powerful words.
INVITATION TO THE "PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS"
During the preparation of the altar and the gifts, at what
we used to be called the offertory, the priest says: "Pray
my dear friends that our sacrifice may be acceptable to
God, the almighty Father.” When he completes this
invitation to prayer, we will now stand as a community
and then respond to what he said with our response:
“May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the
praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good
of all his Church.” This standing is a sign that we have
accepted the priest's invitation to pray, and then, as we
all stand, make our communal response.
WE NOW BOW BEFORE RECEIVING HOLY
COMMUNION. As we come forward toward the altar, we
remain standing, and as we approach the minister of
Communion we bow our head, respond “Amen,” and
receive either in the hand or on the tongue. If we receive
the Precious Blood, the same reverence, the bow of the
head, is done before receiving. We do not genuflect.

These words might remind you of your second grade teacher Sr. Mary Joseph,
but did you know that she was really teaching you a wonderful lesson? We as
Catholics have honored saints in our memories, hearts, and in prayer. Their
lives are constant reminders that we can attain goodness, courage, and faith in
our persistence to imitate the life of Jesus.
November 1st is the Feast of All Saints, when we as a church recognize the important role a saint
has in our life. Perhaps we are devoted to the saint that bears our name or to the saint from our
home town. Intercessory prayer is an important part of Christian belief and our devotion to a saint
indicates that we have formed an intimate friendship with that saint who, perhaps, provides
guidance and solace.
WE INVITE YOU TO LIGHT A CANDLE THAT REMAINS LIT FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR
at the Shrine of the Saint who shares a special place in your heart,
here at St. Athanasius Church.
Each candle is lit for a year, beginning on All Saints Day, November 1.
