examination of the life and circumstances of the person
under consideration. But for every saint who makes the
official canon (list), there are many other holy people in
each generation who live and die in equally astonishing
measures of grace. What it comes down to is that
canonized saints are held up as examples of virtuous
living for the whole church, but the saints of God are
more numerous still. Catholics don’t worship saints.
Worship and adoration are reserved for God alone.
What we offer saints is veneration: due honors for their
achievements. We also seek the intercession of saints:
their spiritual assistance. Saint Dominic consoled his
Dominican brothers at his death by reminding them:
“Do not weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my
death and I shall help you then more effectively than
during my life.”
Like the people in Jesus’ time, we have heard the
commandment to love God with all our heart, soul,
mind, and strength many times. This is what the saints
have given us an example of throughout their
lives. The question is: What does that exactly mean for
us today? It means that in the midst of commuting to
and from work, working, preparing meals, raking the
lawn, putting up storm windows (if anyone does that
anymore), what would our lives look like if we were
even partially successful at following this
commandment? It turns out that the answer is in the
second commandment: “Love your neighbor as
yourself.” Or, as the Jesuit scientist Father Teilhard de
Chardin put it, “The way we treat people is the way we
treat God.” We love God by loving others. May all of us
on our journey of faith strive to live these two great
commandments.
Please watch for our All Saints Museum to be displayed
in the atrium during the month of November.
Dear Friends,
Sports figures, comic-book heroes, and celebrities do
things most of us can’t and wish we could. What’s even
better about saints is that they do things the rest of us
could and would be doing—if only we made the
singular decision to join their ranks. Technically, you
make the register of saints by undergoing a process
called canonization, which includes a thorough

OUTREACH
DONATIONS FOR
THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKETS NEEDED:
We are in need of donations of Turkeys and food items for our
Thanksgiving food baskets. Since it was such a huge success the
last two years, we will again be collecting “PENNIES FOR
PIES”. We would like to purchase pies to be given to families
with their Thanksgiving meal. If you would like to donate
pennies (or any other amount), please place your donation in
our POOR BOXES throughout the church or in the JAR on the
display table in the ATRIUM. We are hoping to provide food
baskets for approximately 125 families this Thanksgiving this
year and your help is needed. There is a sign-up book for
turkey donations located on our display table in the
ATRIUM. There are also SLIPS OF PAPER WITH THE
LIST OF ITEMS needed for the Thanksgiving food baskets on
our display table. Please take one and bring back the needed
items. The St Vincent de Paul Society depends upon our parish
contributions to help provide holiday meals for families we
serve.
Please sign up to donate a turkey and pick up a a slip of
paper with items needed to fill the baskets. We will be
distributing the turkeys and food the weekend before
Thanksgiving. Donations of turkeys and food items will be
needed at the Masses on Saturday, November 17, 2012 and
Sunday, November 18, 2012 or sooner. Thank you so much
for your continued support.
Please also remember to support our St. Vincent de Paul Society
by making donations to our Poor Boxes or purchasing Super
Market Certificates. These are our main sources of income in
helping to meet the needs of those in our surrounding
community.
FOOD PANTRY OPENED EVERY TUESDAY &
THURSDAY FROM 10:00 to 12:00. We are always in need
of: Boxed potatoes, tomato sauce, pasta, tuna fish, canned meats
(ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, stew, chili), jelly, juice of any

(toilet paper, paper towels napkins), canned vegetables, laundry
detergent.
“REMEMBER THOSE IN NEED” The items needed this
week are: PAPER PRODUCTS (Toilet Paper, Paper Towels,

monthly basis. God bless our parishioners in "Helping Us
Help Others".
The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is in need of
someone with a VAN or TRUCK to pick up an order of
food from Aldi’s on a monthly basis and deliver to our

Please Note: A continuing list of the sick will be listed in “The
Book of the Sick.” Please see or visit the Book of the Sick
located in the atrium. Write in the name of those you wish the
community to hold in prayer. This book will be brought up
with the gifts and the prayer intentions.
“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has
faith but does not have works?” – James 2:14. As we
start this Year of Faith, please consider putting your faith
into action! For the first week of September, three
families were able to have breakfast, lunch and dinner
through the generosity of Holy Eucharist parishioners.
Whether you made a meal or dropped off some of the
other items needed, I cannot thank you enough for your
participation in the Interfaith Hospitality Ministry. Thank
you to the people who routinely assist and to those who
responded to Fr. Andrew's request for some last minute
help. The next time IFH provides meals is November 1117, 2012. The main meals are covered so we just need
beverages, bread, and desserts. You will find a list of
other items needed on the IFH table in the atrium. If you
have any questions, please contact Janet Boris at
[email protected] or 268-0828. Please keep the poor
and hungry in your prayers.
CAST CORNER
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
In today’s gospel, Jesus speaks of the two greatest
commandments: To love God with our whole being and to
love our neighbor as ourselves. The first commandment
comes from our roots in Judaism – it is called the “Sh’ma” –
the Hebrew word for LISTEN. Although the scribe only
asks Jesus for the first of all the commandments, Jesus links
love of God with love of neighbor. In Jesus’ eyes, our love
of God is lived out in how we love one another!
As we continue to pray for those who feel disconnected from
our Catholic faith community, how is God asking us to
LISTEN to voices different from our own and “love our
neighbor as ourselves”?
