Tal Tours – Deluxe Kosher Tours Presents: JAPAN & KOREA MAY 2010 Sunday, May 23 In Transit Depart the USA on our trans‐pacific flight for the delights of Japan. Cross the international dateline enroute and lose a day (not to worry – we’ll regain it when we return!) Monday, May 24 Tokyo Deluxe Kosher Tours and their dedicated Japanese ground staff will meet us at the airport upon our arrival this evening and transfer us to the Hyatt Regency in Tokyo. Tuesday, May 25 Tokyo For the most adventurous and energetic travelers, Deluxe Kosher Tours offers a chance to leave the hotel in the very early hours of the morning for the chance to visit Japan's most famous and biggest fish market: the Tsukji Fish Market. Marvel at the tuna auctions, and the great variety ‐ from the well‐
known to the exotic ‐ of seafood on display. After our time at the market, visit one of Japan's loveliest gardens: the Hama Rikyu Garden. After this, Deluxe Kosher Tours will take us on a tour of Tokyo that includes the city's most famous sights: the Imperial Palace Plaza, the Asajusa Kannon Temple ‐ Tokyo's largest Buddhist temple ‐ and Tokyo Tower. In the afternoon, spend time at the famous Taskai Pearl and take a tour of the Akihabara and Ginza neighborhoods. Spend our evening enjoying an optional Kabuki performance. Wednesday, May 26 Kyoto Board Japan's famously fast bullet train as Deluxe Kosher Tours escorts us to Kyoto (luggage will travel via separate truck), where ‐ weather permitting ‐ we may get a glimpse of the majestic Mount Fuji. In contrast to modern, vibrant, Tokyo, Kyoto ‐ over a millennium old ‐ embodies the serenity and enchantment of ancient Japan, where traditional industries ‐ such as embroidery, ceramics, and doll‐
making ‐ make up much of the Kyoto economy. Kyoto also serves as the religious capital of Japan ‐ and our visit there will bring us to some of the most beautiful temples of Japan, including the Kinkakuji Shrine, an opulent gilded building in a magnificent garden, along with a tea house. We then visit the Heian shrine, and the Sanjusandendo Temple. In the evening, visit Gion, the geisha district of Kyoto. Despite Western misconceptions, geishas are not in fact prostitutes, but rather part of a distinct and traditional Japanese culture. Learn more about Japanese entertainment before heading to our hotel, the Righa Royal Hotel or something similar. Thursday, May 27 Kyoto Kyoto, considered the “Jerusalem of Japan” is home to over 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, some of the most important in Japan, as well as the traditional site of the coronation of Japan’s emperors. Due to its sanctity, the city was not bombed by the allies during World War II. We‘ll visit Ryoanji Temple – a Zen Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site that is famous for its simplistic and stark dry‐landscape garden. Our next stop will be at Kyoto’s famous Nishiki Market. After a visit to other famous sites of Kyoto, such as Nijo Castle and the famous rock garden of Ryoanji Temple we return to our hotel. Friday, May 28 We journey early today towards Kobe. Our first stop this morning upon departing Kobe will be Himeji Castle, one of Japan’s three most beautiful castles and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle was built in 1333 as an army stronghold, and in the 17th century was rebuilt to serve the shuguns, and the city of Himeji was built around it. It is 5 stories high and is surrounded by many structures and gardens of Sakura trees. Shabbat, May 29 We’ll spend a moving, enjoyable and relaxing Shabbat with the Jewish community in Kobe, the only fully functional Orthodox community in Japan. After Shacharit and a Kiddush/Lunch, we’ll take a stroll through the neighborhood near our hotel. Sunday, May 30 We depart Kobe this morning for Hiroshima where we will remember the city that was bombed at the end of World War II. Hiroshima, which in 1945 was the 6th largest city in Japan, was of strategic military importance. The headquarters of the Second Army, charged with protecting southern Japan, was located here. The city was built mainly of wood, was very vulnerable to fire. We will visit the A‐
Bomb Dome, Peace Park, Museum and Memorial. We’ll make our way across the water by ferry to Miyajima Island, a sacred island that houses what is arguably Japan’s most beautiful shrine – Itsukushima. The whole island is an historical site and is considered one of the three most beautiful sites in Japan. The birth of the city is dated back to 593 AC when empress Seiko was crowned and a shrine was built in honor of this event. . We return to Kobe for the final night in Japan. NOTE: Today’s tour will be done via train between Kobe and Hiroshima with a local bus in Hiroshima taking us around. Food will be taken from Kobe (boxed lunches) and we will have a hot dinner on our return to Kobe. Monday, May 31 We are transferred to the Osaka airport for our brief 2 ½ ‐hour flight to Seoul. Upon arrival in Seoul at Incheon International Airport, we will be met and transferred by our Deluxe Kosher Tours Korean Ground Staff to the Hyatt Regency Hotel . After check‐in we will have dinner and get a good night’s rest. Tuesday, June 1 Seoul / Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon/Korean Folk Village / Seoul This morning travel to Suwon, the walled city, which was planned to be the capital city of the Joseon Dynasty in the 18th century with the intention of moving the national capital from Seoul to Suwon and Hwaseong fortress wall was constructed. Narae Bridge, expressing a butterfly in flight, and Gwanggyo Bridge, symbolizing the harmony of the past and future, are just two of the more than twenty beautiful bridges featured along the path of the stream. The ‘Rhythmic Wall Stream’, lined with fine marble, various sculptures, and Korea’s 8th stone building, Palseokdam, adorn the Cheonggyecheon Stream. This evening visit Nanta Theater which is the permanent home of the first Korean non‐verbal performance called 'Nanta.' Nanta is a hybrid artwork, the combination of a traditional Korean folk performance called 'Samulnori' and Western forms of performance. On the stage is a giant kitchen, where four cooks appear and start cooking dishes for a wedding reception. In the process, they perform Samulnori using the various cooking utensils, such as pots, pans, and plates, etc. It was a big hit from the moment it opened, due to the power and speed of the performance. Friday, June 4 Seoul / Icheon Ceramics Village / Seoul This morning drive to Icheon Ceramics Village where produces traditional Korean ceramics, which are of high quality. Tal Tours - Deluxe Kosher Tours presents
PORTUGAL JULY 2010
SUNDAY/July 25
Departure
Depart on our overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal
MONDAY/July 26
Full day in Lisbon
After being meet by our DELUXE KOSHER TOURS ground personnel we begin our tour of L Lisbon, the
capital and largest city in Portugal, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Tagus River.
Lisbon is the city of the Fado, of the palaces covered by the azulejos (the characteristic painted tiles) and
of the winding alleys crossed by tram. Our visit starts with a visit to the Lisbon Synagogue. With its
hidden façade (because of the strict rules that were imposed on the Jewish buildings in the past) it still is
the meeting point of the Jewish community of Lisbon. After our guided visit to the Synagogue we will
start the visit of the Portuguese capital. This first day allows us to discover Lisbon colonized by many
civilizations along the centuries: Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and finally the
Portuguese after 1147. We will visit St. George Castle, including its surrounding quarter and Alfama,
Lisbon's oldest quarter. Close to Alfama we will also visit the Judiaria (Jewish Quarter) of Lisbon with its
narrow streets and small houses where the Jewish population used to live. In the central area of the city
we will also find the Jewish presence in the Commerce Square, where thousands of Jews were
baptized against their own will. Dinner and overnight at the hotel
TUESDAY/July 27 Departure to Óbidos, Batalha, Tomar and overnight in Lousã
Today we will head to the North of the country and our first stop is a visit in Óbidos. This medieval town
still preserves the atmosphere of the centuries that passed by it. The old castle walls, that enclose the
white washed houses, are a symbol that the past is still present on the daily life of the city. A short walk
on the narrow cobbled streets, where small shops offer the “Ginjinha” (cherry liquor) will be the perfect
beginning of the day. After leaving Óbidos behind the next stop is Batalha, considered a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, mainly because of its gothic monastery. Once we're inside we'll enter the
Founder's Chapel, where some of the most important Portuguese Kings are buried. John I, Alfonso V,
John II and the famous prince Henry the Navigator, who hired the best Jewish cartographers,
geographers and mathematicians of the 1400's to initiate the Portuguese Golden Age of the Discoveries.
The afternoon will be spent in the city of Tomar, where one of the most important Synagogues of
Portugal is located. Inside the Jewish Museum Abraham Zacuto will allow us to understand the
importance of the Jewish population in this city. On the top of the hill it's located the Convent of Christ,
World Heritage by UNESCO, which is the bastion of one of the most important religious orders in
Portugal: the Order of Christ. At the end of the day we will go all the way to Lousã where we spend the
night.
WEDNESDAY/July 28 Visit to Coimbra and Buçaco and departure to Amarante
Today we journey to the city of the students: Coimbra. With one of oldest universities in Europe,
Coimbra has been standing out as a center of knowledge and Portuguese culture in the past seven
centuries. A visit to the Old University (still functioning) will give us a general perspective of the
educational system in Portugal as well as an insightful approach to the influence that the Jewish
population had in the Portuguese educational system. The lunch break will be one of the highlights of
the day since it will be held in the Buçaco Palace Hotel, a former monastery, in the middle of the
exuberant forest of Buçaco. After lunch and a short walk in the forest, we will head to Amarante, on the
north of Portugal. The arrival at Amarante, still with the sunlight, will allow us to go for a walk in the
historical center of this charming town before retiring for a relaxing evening in our hotel.
THURSDAY/July 29
Visit of Porto and return to Amarante
Today will be spent in the capital of the North, Porto, whose historical center is considered a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO. After a short panoramic tour of Porto, we walk down the Judiaria (Jewry)
of Porto discovering the secret past of the Jewish community of this city. Our walking tours with a visit
to the Sinagogue of Porto. This pathway will lead us to Ribeira, the Waterfront and most
characteristic neighborhood of Porto where the old houses with their colorful façades still remind us of
the poor fishermen and sailors that once lived there. In the afternoon we are awaited at the Taylor's wine
cellar (www.taylor.pt) for a visit of their amazing wine ageing facilities and a taste of a Kosher Port
Wine, the only one made in the World! After the visit it is time return to Amarante for dinner.
FRIDAY/July 30 Departure to Vila Real, Régua (Port Wine), Viseu, Guarda and
overnight in Belmonte
This morning we will visit one of the most wonderful baroque Palaces in Portugal, the Mateus Manor
House, which façade was immortalized by the label of one of the most famous Portuguese wines: the
Mateus Rose. The day will continue towards the town of Régua, where you will have the opportunity to
taste the worldwide famous Port Wine and see how it's produced nowadays. The day will continue
towards south but first we should not miss Viseu with its cathedral and medieval neighborhood. Enroute
to Belmonte we will visit the highest city in Portugal: Guarda with its gothic cathedral and well preserved
Jewry. We arrive Belmonte on Erev Shabbat allowing us to enjoy this special day in the most active
Jewish community of Portugal.
SATURDAY/July 31
Belmonte (Sabbath) and Sortelha
On Shabbat we will have the opportunity to relax or participate in some of the religious activities that
always take place in Belmonte or just enjoy the silence of the mountains that once inspired thousands
of Jews that decided to settle in this region. Belmonte is in fact one of the best places in Portugal to
understand the secrets and mysteries of a Jewish community that had to live in secret for centuries. This
small Jewish community is the most active Jewish center of Portugal and still preserves some of the old
traditions that allowed them to practice the Jewish religion in secret. Dinner at our hotel.
SUNDAY/August 1
Castelo de Vide, Marvão, Évora and return to Lisbon
After a relaxing day in Belmonte it is time to explore the South of Portugal: the Alentejo. Leaving
Belmonte early in the morning we will stop for a visit in Castelo de Vide. Located on the top of the São
Mamede Mountain Castelo de Vide still preserves it's old Castle, Jewry and one of oldest and most
important Synagogues of Portugal. Just a few minutes away from Castelo de Vide we find the
imposing Marvão Castle that in the past bravely defended the Portuguese independence from the
Spanish invaders. This afternoon we depart to Évora, the most important and monumental city of the
Alentejo region designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Évora is the perfect opportunity to
understand how Moorish influence is still present on the daily life in Alentejo. Besides that, the Chapel of
the Bone's, the Giraldo Square , the Roman Temple and the University are just some of the places that
we will visit in Évora. Don't forget to try some of the Alentejo gastronomy, which is based on bread, olive
oil and aromatic herbs, but still one of the most delicious in the country. At the end of the day we return
to Lisbon where we enjoy our final day before our flight back home.
MONDAY/August 2
Lisbon
We started in Lisbon and so we shall conclude our tour there as well. Lisbon is also linked with the
heroic deeds of the Portuguese maritime exploration, in the 15th and 16th centuries. This was the Age of
Discoveries and the Golden Era of Portugal, transforming Lisbon into the opulent center of a vast empire.
Part of the wealth from these expeditions was used to build magnificent monuments in a unique
Portuguese style: the extravagant Manueline architectural style, best typified in Jerónimos Monastery.
Some of these monuments can still be seen, especially in the area of Belém.
After visiting the part of Lisbon connected with the Golden Era we will visit the Parque das Nações – the
newest neighbourhood of Lisbon where in 1998 the World Exposition dedicated to the theme “The
Oceans – An Heritage to the Future” with their Vasco da Gama Bridge – the longest of Europe with 17km
long – and the Vasco da Gama Tower took place.
We visit Oceanarium (the largest in Europe); the most ambitious construction ever attempted of the
different ocean regions of the Planet (North Atlantic, Pacific, Antarctic and Indian Oceans, all positioned
around a gigantic central tank - 25.000 fish, birds and mammals are on view) and at the end take the
cable-car to the other side of Nation Park. Have a farewell dinner at our hotel.

Attend services with the local Jewish community. Lunch and dinner (Seudat Shlishit) at the Jewish community. Sunday/July 4 Copenhagen ‐ Göteborg After breakfast at the hotel leave Copenhagen. (We will also make a detour to the Parish Church in Gilleleje, used to hide Jewish families during WWII). From Helsingör take a ferry over to Helsingborg in Sweden and continue the drive to Göteborg. Dinner at the Jewish home. Monday/July 5 Göteborg After catered kosher breakfast your local guide will meat you at the hotel and take you on a sightseeing tour in Göteborg. Four years later, the first Jew, Moses Salomon, arrived to the island and some month later Elias Magnus, the ancestor of a still well‐known family in Göteborg. A few years later the Jewish community at Marstrand numbered 60 members. By royal permission, the congregation was allowed to use a vault in the Carlsten fortress as their synagogue. Today, in the empty vault, the place of the Torah shrine can still be identified. In the evening we make a visit to the Liseberg Garden . Tuesday/July 6 Göteborg ‐ Oslo After breakfast at your hotel you start your trip by bus to Oslo, Norway's little but important capital city. Sunday, August 2
In Transit
Depart for Bulgaria's beautiful capital, Sofia.
Monday, August 3
Sofia
Upon your arrival to Sofia airport, Deluxe Kosher Tours will give you a warm Bulgarian welcome
and introduce you to the magic of Sofia. Located in the midst of the majestic Balkans, Sofia is
one of the most historic cities in Europe, with a history spanning nearly 7,000 years. Reachable
by three mountain passes - which lead to the Adriatic, Black, and Aegean seas - Sofia is an
oasis of tranquility that nevertheless stands at a cultural crossroads, combining the best of
Aegean, Central, and Eastern Europe. Once ruled by Philip of Macedonia, and later Alexander
the Great, Sofia also retains Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influence - as well as a strong
tradition of Jewish life; the city's first synagogue was built in 967 CE.
Tuesday, August 4
Sofia
After breakfast, visit the Sephardic Synagogue, a majestic example of the fusion of Byzantine
and Moorish styles. One of Sofia's most beautiful monuments, the synagogue is also a chance
to catch a glimpse of Sofia's Jewish history: the synagogue houses a collection of cultural
treasures documenting the saving of all 50,000 of Bulgaria's Jews during WWII. Spend the
afternoon exploring downtown Sofia - including its Roman fortifications and 4th century
frescoes. Deluxe Kosher Tours will also give you a chance to see the National Art Gallery, in the
former Royal Palace, for a collection of some of Bulgaria's finest artwork. In the evening, you will

This morning,Deluxe Kosher Tours will take you on a beautiful mountain excursion to the

Peter. While his relics are on display in the church, St. John is believed to have in fact lived in a
series of caves a few kilometres from the complex. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the
monastery is impressive not only for its architecture, but also for the stunning natural beauty that
surrounds it. After lunch at a mountainside restaurant, arrive in Sandanski, where you should
expect to be fully pampered at your spa-hotel, including a visit to the famed therapeutic hot
pools. Dinner will be at the hotel, the Interhotel Sandanski.

Rome, Florence, and Venice
Three Treasures of the Classical World
Among all the countries of Europe, Italy stands unparalleled for sheer beauty. The sensual

creamy gelato - are matched only by the rich history of the region, from the temples and
forums of Ancient Rome, to the palazzos and churches of the Renaissance. Begin in Rome,
seat of one of the greatest empires of all time. Go next to Venice, whose romantic mystery
haunts the soul of all who visit it. Finish in Tuscany, where rolling hills and lush greenery
create an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility. Deluxe Kosher Tours has put together the
ideal tour: a tour that not only highlights the must-see sights of the region, but also pays
particular to the Jewish traditions of Italy: a history that spans millennia of cultural and
historical contributions.
Monday, August 16
In Transit
Pack and prepare - today is your flight to Rome.
Tuesday, August 17
Rome
Beginning in the afternoon, Deluxe Kosher Tours' first day of sightseeing begins at the
Pantheon. The best-preserved Roman building in the area, the Pantheon is one of the most
beautiful and unique structures in the world, with a domed ceiling featuring the "oculus:" an
"eye" to the blue skies above. Next, you will be shown the Palatine Hill, where nearly all of the
colorful characters of Ancient Rome lived and worked. See the Forum - the center of all aspects
of Roman life - the Arch of Constantine and marvel at the architectural brilliance of the
Colosseum. You will also see the Arch of Titus, built to commemorate the destruction of the
Jerusalem Temple, and whose pathway was barred to Jews for centuries. Spend your evening
wandering the narrow cobble-stoned streets around Piazza Navona: a magnificent Baroque
circular piazza featuring statues and churches created by such luminaries as Bernini and
Boromini. Spend the night at the luxurious Ponte Sisto, or a hotel of similar quality.
Wednesday, August 18
Rome
Today, Deluxe Kosher Tours will give you an opportunity to explore Rome's ancient Jewish
ghetto, located near the Via Portico d'Ottavia. Here, you can spend time in the Tempio
Israelitico and the Jewish Museum. Spend the afternoon with a different religion as Deluxe
Kosher Tours takes you on a tour of the Sistine Chapel, where some of the most powerful
stories in Judaism are depicted by the genius of Michaelangelo, including creation, Adam and
Eve, and the flood.
Thursday, August 19
Rome-Venice
Today, travel by air to Venice. When you arrive in the afternoon, you will take a tour on foot of
the area around Venice's center: the celebrated St. Mark's Square. Take a look at St. Mark's
Basilica, built in 830 CE, an example of the fusion Italian-Byzantine style for which Venice - a
center of trading and cross-cultural activity - was once celebrated. Nearby is the Duke's Palace,
a masterpiece of pink and white marble, where the doges of Venice ruled this vibrant city. The
Grand Council Chambers of the Palace house Tintoretto's "Paradise," and if you look up, you
can see Veronese's famous "Apotheosis of Venice" painted on the ceiling. Accommodation will
be at the Hotel Principe, or a hotel of similar standard.
Friday, August 20
Venice
Jewish Venice is the name of the game today. The first ghetto in the world - where Jews were
locked in from dusk to dawn - is still standing here, and the Jewish community there has
survived to see a more enlightened Venice. You will be given a chance to see the synagogues
still standing - testaments to the grandeur and strength of the community and its faith. In the
afternoon, take some leisure time to wander the bridges and streets, handicraft shops and
antique stores, that give Venice so much of its charm, or take a boat to see glassblowing in
Burano and Murano, two islands that maintain their traditions of immaculate craftsmanship. As
the sun sets, do not forget to take a seat in one of the many gondolas lining the canals to see
the romance of Venice's waters by moonlight.
Shabbat, August 21
Venice
Share Shabbat with your neighbors in the Venetian Jewish community.
Sunday, August 22

In the morning, Deluxe Kosher Tours will drive you to Florence in time to spend the afternoon
wandering the city. Visit some of Florence's most celebrated landmarks, including one of the

beauty meets history. Spend the night at the Hotel Palazzo Ognissanti, or a similarly beautiful
hotel.
Monday, August 23

walk through its streets and a survey of its palaces, towers, and other sites of significance, drive
on to Pisa: once the capital of a great Renaissance republic, a seat of art, learning, and culture.
Famous for the leaning tower - visible even from outside the city limits - Pisa hosts a variety of
notable examples of Romanesque architecture. After a visit to the tower, return to Florence for
another evening in that enchanted city.

of King David. Spend time in the celebrated Uffizi, reportedly home of the best collection of early
modern painting in the world. Before nightfall, Deluxe Kosher Tours will bring you to the
