SHERIFF’S OFFICE KENT COUNTY 2002 ANNUAL STATUS

KENT COUNTY
SHERIFF’S OFFICE
2002
ANNUAL STATUS
REPORT
Greetings:
We are very proud of the level of service which the Kent County Sheriff’s Office
delivered to the citizens of the County during 2002. We think that the data in the
following report show a solid record of progress in making Kent County a safe and
secure place to live.
Statistics alone, however, do not tell the full story of our accomplishments.
Among the developments we are pleased to report are:
•
Vision Statement. We issued the first “vision statement” for the Kent
County Sheriff’s Office – the view of what we want to be:
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office will be a first-class law enforcement agency,
delivering superior service to the citizens of Kent County.
•
Law Enforcement Accreditation. As a demonstration of our commitment
to our vision, we are seeking accreditation from the Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). CALEA has
established more than 400 law enforcement “best practices” and we are
working to ensure we are in compliance with them. We plan to have an
on-site assessment of our compliance by CALEA and to receive
accreditation during 2003.
•
School Resource Officer. Our School Resource Officer, a combination
teacher/counselor/law enforcement officer who works at Kent County
High School, finished his second successful year. There was a 30 percent
drop in the number of juvenile referrals, compared to the first year of the
program.
•
Narcotics Enforcement Team. We recently set up our own Narcotics Unit
in order to increase accountability in this important area. To date, the
team has made 32 arrests for possession or distribution of narcotics and
has seized currency and vehicles.
•
Community Policing Grant. We applied for and received a grant from the
U.S. Department of Justice to establish a Community Policing Officer
position. The new position will permit us to extend our outreach to the
County’s towns and neighborhoods.
We want to be fully responsive to the citizens of Kent County and serve you in
the best way we can. We would welcome any comments or questions you have about
this report.
