The all-day event was held at Norwalk City Hall and consisted of various activities that called attention to the diversity and cultural richness of our community. Several young women competed in the Queen Contest. The top four were asked to attend a City Council meeting to be honored. The Queen and Court included Queen Carmen Javier, 1st runner up Laura Ruvalcaba, 2nd runner up Brittany Martinez and Co-2nd runner up Andrea Martinez Congratulations ladies. A very special effort by our previous Queen is especially noteworthy and a tremendous success. The “Locks of Love” program was initiated by our previous 16th of September Queen Candie Aguilar after she had contacted Norwalk’s Vice Mayor about the plausibility of the program. It was conducted by our Recreation Department and Cerritos College’s Cosmetology Department with the help of the Department Chairwoman Pat Novinski and her students. It was held on Saturday, September 13, 2008, on the Norwalk Civic Center Lawn as part of our Annual 16th of September Celebration. Cerritos hair stylists were on site cutting and styling hair and makeup artists were applying complimentary makeup for donors who participated in the Drive. Over 150 donations were collected. The longest ponytail was 26” and the youngest donor was 3 years old. Overall, 1,888 1/2 total inches were collected including $40 in cash. Locks of Love uses all donated hair for hairpieces for people suffering from long-term medical hair loss due to any diagnosis. The City Council individually handed out certificates to the volunteers and presented Cerritos College’s Cosmetology Department a check for $1,000 for the great job they did. The Importance of Pedestrian Safety With the increased use of electronic devices in our everyday lives, pedestrian and traffic safety have become increasingly important. Devices such as IPods, portable gaming devices, and cell phones have diverted pedestrians’ attention to oncoming traffic throughout all areas within our community. With that in mind, the Department of Public Safety would like to remind pedestrians of the following safety tips: • Be cautious of your surroundings, especially when using IPods, MP3 players, or any device that does not allow you to hear potential hazards. • Cross at intersections, preferably in marked crosswalks, whenever possible. • Allow vehicle time to stop before you step into the crosswalk. Although you have the right-ofway, do not assume the vehicle sees you. • Before stepping off the curb, look LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT, and listen for oncoming traffic. Do not simply depend on traffic signals to guide you when it’s clear to walk. Look before you step into the street • Don’t jaywalk or cross between parked or stopped vehicles • Walk on sidewalks when they are available. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the street facing traffic. Walk defensively and keep your eye on the traffic at all times. Whether you are a pedestrian or motorist, the City of Norwalk Department of Public Safety encourages all of its residents to abide all traffic laws and safety regulations. If you have any questions concerning pedestrian or traffic safety, please contact the Public Safety Office at (562) 929-5732. Here are some tips to help assure safety in and out of your home. Personal Safety Tips • Be aware of your surroundings and people who appear pear suspicious. • Shop with a friend or relative. ow • Before going holiday shopping, let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be back. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use checks or credit cards when possible to pay for purchases. • Do not carry a large purse or have your wallet visible. • If you feel uncomfortable with someone around you, walk to a well-lit area where there are other people. • Use the ATM machine during the day when people are around. Guard Against Burglary • Check all indoor and outdoor lights for defects before using. Do not overburden electrical outlets. • If possible, keep porch and yard lights on. Well-lit houses are less susceptible to break-ins. • Avoid placing wrapped gifts in view from the outside. • If you are going to be away during the holidays, let a trusted neighbor know where you are going to be and how to get in contact with you. You may also contact the Department of Public Safety to have patrol checks of your home while you are away. Christmas Tree Safety • Christmas tree fires annually claim the lives of children and adults. • Consider purchasing an artificial tree (they are much safer and cleaner). • Before purchasing a live tree, check it for freshness by tapping it on the ground (it should not lose its green needles). • Cut one inch off the trunk to help the tree absorb water. • Leave the tree outside until you are ready to decorate it. • Your Christmas tree stand should hold at least one gallon of water (a 6 foot tree will use one gallon of water every two days). • Check the water level everyday. • Secure the tree with wire to keep it from tipping over. • Keep your tree away from floor heaters, fireplaces, or other heat sources. • Use UL approved lights and link no more than three strands together. • Use miniature lights that have cool-burning bulbs. • Turn off the Christmas lights when you sleep or leave your home. • Never use candles. • Dispose of the tree properly. Why shop at a locally owned business first? The following 10 reasons show how more money spent at local business is reinvested in your community creating diversity and helping the community maintain or create its unique appeal. 1. SHOPPING LOCAL CREATES JOBS - Shops in our town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. 2. LOCAL INDEPENDENT SHOPS INVEST MORE IN OUR COMMUNITIES - Local businesses are proportionally more generous in their support of local charities, schools, and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial impact on your community. 3. LOCAL SHOPS SELL A WIDE RANGE OF GREAT PRODUCTS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES - Many people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available right in their own community. 4. SHOPPING LOCAL SAVES YOU MONEY - Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that local businesses = expensive. If you add travel, fees to transfer larger items and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. 5. SHOPPING LOCAL RETAINS OUR COMMUNITIES People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. 6. SHOP LOCAL RETAINS OUR DISTINCTIVENESS Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet the changing population needs. 7. SHOPPING LOCAL SAVES THE ENVIRONMENT - Local shops often stock a high percentage of local sourced goods which do not require long car and bus journeys, helping reduce our global footprint. 8. LOCAL SHOPS ARE FOR EVERYONE - Most people can get to their local shops easily and this especially important for the elderly and young people and those without transportation. 9. LOCAL SHOPS VALUE YOU MORE - Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business which means you get a higher standard of service. 10. SHOPPING LOCAL SAVES SERVICES - Private and public sector services cluster around shops. As shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, and restaurants, etc. So….shop smart, shop local!! It makes good cent$!! 2 10 REASONS TO SHOP LOCAL The City of Norwalk would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the men and women who unselfishly risk their lives to serve our country in the war with Iraq. Our gratitude to all those who have returned home safely, to those who are still serving and our thoughts and prayers to those families who lost a loved one. Thank you for your courage and support to the following Norwalk residents. Jose G. Rodriguez RIP Miguel Guzman RIP Antonio Acero Ronny A. Aguon Thomas J. Aguon Edgar Ahumada Luis Ahumada Jr. Jun M. From the fields and forests of war-torn Europe to the jungles of Southeast Asia, from the deserts of Iraq to the mountains of Afghanistan, brave patriots have protected our Nation’s ideals, rescued millions from tyranny, and helped spread freedom around the globe. America’s veterans answered the call when asked to protect our Nation from some of the most brutal and ruthless tyrants, terrorists, and militaries the world has ever known. They stood tall in the face of grave danger and enabled our Nation to become the greatest force for freedom in human history. Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard have answered a high calling to serve and have helped secure America at every turn. Our country is forever indebted to our veterans for their quiet courage and exemplary service. We also remember and honor those who laid down their lives in freedom’s defense. These brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice for our benefit. On Veterans Day, we remember these heroes for their valor, their loyalty, and their dedication. Their selfless sacrifices continue to inspire us today as we work to advance peace and extend freedom around the world. The program was conducted on Patriot’s Concourse at Norwalk City Hall. The prelude was an outstanding piece of music by Norwalk’s own All City Band Directed by Tom Phillips. John Gomez, Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7138, gave the welcome and a combined color guard of the American Legion representatives, Veterans of Foreign Wars representatives and the Norwalk Public Safety Cadet Color Guard presented colors. Chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7138, Mike Hill, gave the invocation and John Gomez did the Pledge of Allegiance. A special treat was the National Anthem sung by the Norwalk High School Singers. Nancy Lanpher conducts the group and Assistant Principal Leonard Shryock arranged their participation. Another special treat was God Bless the USA sung by Mrs. Rice’s 3rd Grade Class from Dolland Elementary School. Introductions were made by Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander John Gomez and American Legion 1st Vice President Wayne Carrigan and Auxiliary President Becky Bullard. Civic Dignitaries included Kevin Gano representing Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano and the Norwalk City Council. The Mayor’s comments were, “Good morning everyone. It’s an honor to celebrate Veterans Day with you and call attention to the service of all those who put their lives on the line for this nation’s freedom.” “Ever since the first Veterans Day – originally “Armistice Day” – in 1919, Americans have paused to salute the men and women who have kept us free.” “To the many veterans here today, I thank you for your service to our Country. “Veteran” is a title you can wear proudly in Norwalk because we all know whether you served for a few years or for many, you put the nation’s needs above your own. You all stood ready, if the order came to risk everything for our Country’s cause.” “Our wars have taken some of our finest citizens. This great sacrifice has given us every hour we live in freedom. The sacrifice will never be forgotten.“ “So, on this Veterans Day — as we honor the dead, remember the missing, celebrate the living, and recognize all of those who fought to defend our country and our freedom — let’s also pray for a time when we all live in peace.” “Until then, may God bless us all and keep us safe.” Norwalk’s All City Band’s Service Medley and rendition of “God Bless America” were outstanding. The highlight of the event was comments by Keynote Speaker, Oscar Barraza, U.S.M.C. Retired. He related his personal struggles and achievements and how his love of God and Country has made him the man he is today. Dolland Elementary School’s 3rd Grade Class did the Veterans Day Salute. Chaplain of American Legion Post #359, John Cowan, did the benediction. The Norwalk High School Singers who sang, “Let it Shine”, nicely finished off the program. Thanks to everyone who made this year’s Veterans Day a tremendous success. Mrs. Rice’s 3rd Grade Class from Dolland Elementary School. Keynote Speaker, Oscar Barazza, Lance Corporal, USMC. Nancy Lanpher conducts Norwalk High School Singers. All City Band performs splendidly under direction of Tom Phillips.
