The aim is to be awarded funds to purchase a public bicycle repair stations that allow for more user friendly self-care of bicycles and even provide educational opportunities for students to be empowered with knowledge and skills for bicycle repair and maintenance. The repair stations would be located in various places around campus that intersect with high bicycle-use areas to maximize convenience for bicyclists. Specific sites have not been determined at this point. However, if the grant is awarded, final location decisions will be determined through collaboration with FMD Grounds Department, student input, and Bike Athens. Potential locations include the Tate Student Center, north campus lawn area, and the Trial Gardens. This would provide an even distribution of location throughout campus (see map). Currently, a self-serve bike repair station exists at the Ramsey Student Center (pictured below). This repair station has received attention from many campus publications including Columns (January 28, 2013) and The University of Georgia Magazine (June 2013). Campus Sustainability Grant Application Form (2013-2014), REV 08.27.13 UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY GRANTS PROGRAM Intended Outcome The primary intended outcome is to increase convenience of common bicycle repair needs by providing these self-serve stations around the University of Georgia campus. The secondary intended outcome of this project is that this increase in convenience will result in an increase in decisions to ride to and oncampus since a public repair station exists. Our hope is that the simple presence of such a tool, easily accessible at no charge, will motivate people to ride their bicycles more knowing that a public repair station exists for simple maintenance needs that may arise. An additional intended outcome is that the University of Georgia, by funding this project, continues to lead the way in adaptable and progressive efforts in the Athens community and the southeast. Contribution to Existing Efforts This project falls directly in-line with the Bulldog Bikes program that has begun this semester (Fall 2012). The successful funding of this project shows that UGA is committed to encouraging “safe, cost-effective and environmentally preferred transportation option at UGA.” This project also addresses specific Strategic Priorities of the Strategic Direction VII of the University of Georgia 2020 Strategic Plan: - - This project will serve as an example to other organizations and communities of how to integrate sustainability into existing and new operations (i.e. existing bicycle maintenance clinics, existing public bicycle repair station at the Ramsey Student Center) Integrate sustainability into the student experience through curricular and co-curricular means both in the classroom and beyond (i.e. empowering students to learn self-sufficiency in bicycle commuting so that the choice to ride a bicycle is less challenging) Campus Sustainability Grant Application Form (2013-2014), REV 08.27.13 UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY GRANTS PROGRAM The project addresses an Illustrative Benchmark as well: - Reduce the number of automobiles on campus by 20 percent, and increase by 20 percent the number of faculty, staff, and students who commute to campus using alternative modes of transportation such as mass transit, bicycles or walking. The logic is that with increased knowledge and skills development as well as the availability of the tools needed, the decision to ride a bicycle will be more readily made. Partnering Departments The UGA Outdoor Recreation program within the Department of Recreational Sports is the primary supporter of this project. The Outdoor Recreation program currently offers Bicycle Maintenance clinics that use the Ramsey station as a teaching tool. Facilities Management has also expressed enthusiasm for assisting with the installation of the unit. Additionally, we have received a letter of support from BikeAthens (see attachment). Their partnership will assist in the final location decision for the stations. BikeAthens also intends to utilize the stations for outreach efforts in the community. By increasing the educational resources for advocacy groups such as BikeAthens, we hope to increase ridership in the community. Other supporters of our idea include Student Government Association and a current Office of Sustainability intern, Sahana Srivatsan. Sahana is working on creating a Bike UGA student organization which would greatly benefit from improved bicycle infrastructure such as these repair stations. Since the repair station is an all-inclusive unit, all that is needed is the identification of acceptable sites on the UGA campus and corresponding installations. Facilities Management on campus has already expressed interest in helping to research appropriate locations and install the stations. The stations would most likely be purchased near the end of the Fall semester with installation occurring in December 2012 or January 2013. The UGA Outdoor Recreation program would like to have the station installed for the beginning of the Spring 2013 semester so that it can advertise it in their Spring marketing efforts. Communications Plan As soon as installation is underway, promotional efforts will include: - Recreational Sports’ Marketing Team that will generate fliers and posters to promote the station and its use The UGA Outdoor Recreation program will utilize social media as well as other web-based promotion efforts Press releases will also be generated to be included in the Red & Black campus newspaper as well as other potential university print media outlets Anticipated Grant Project Metrics - QUANTITATIVE: Our intent is to utilize volunteers to monitor repair location at random days/times for use counts. October 30, 2013 Athens, GA Joseph Robinson: BikeAthens supports the installation of more bike repair stations on UGA Campus. The repair stations correspond with our vision of a comprehensive transportation network all Athenians can use with comfort and ease. The repair stations make riding for transportation easier by offering convenient access to tools many riders do not, or cannot, carry with them on a bike. Even experienced riders usually only carry a few essential tools and a small, inefficient hand pump, simply to make emergency repairs. The repair stations’ tools allow riders to make more complete repairs, and as the stations also include a stand, a rider can fix the bike without awkwardly placing the bike on the ground. I know our members enjoy and use public repair stations often for just these reasons. Bike repair stations also encourage cycling and play a role in increasing ridership. To our knowledge, there are only three or four public repair stands in all of Athens. There is one at The Daily Groceries Store on Prince Avenue. One at the Kroger on Alps Bridge Road, perhaps one at the Publix on the East Side, and one on Campus. This leaves the downtown / campus area underserved, especially considering that most cycling occurs in the downtown / campus area. Many new riders are hesitant to stray from home because they fear a mechanical breakdown. Bike repair stations raise the comfort level by assuring riders that a small breakdown will not force a long walk or car ride home. As a result, cycling becomes a more convenient choice as small repairs no longer require a trip home or a trip to the bike shop. Finally, the stands build on BikeAthens community outreach and education efforts. When Daily Groceries installed their repair stand, BikeAthens taught employees how to give basic instructions to customers seeking to use the stand. We would be willing to engage in similar outreach with the new stands. To ensure they get optimal use, we can also help in selecting locations for the stands. Sincerely, BikeAthens
