בשיתוף עם כנס הליווי והתמיכה הרוחנית השנתי ה11-
בנושא תקווה וחוסן :ליווי רוחני רב-תרבותי ,חדשני ובינתחומי.
בכנס זה נציין יותר מעשור של שיתוף פעולה מקצועי בין NAJCלבין ארגוני הליווי
והתמיכה הרוחנית בישראל.
מטרת הכנס היא להציע דרכים לשילוב חדשני ויעיל של הליווי הרוחני בתחומים
נוספים של פרקטיקה מקצועית.
בכנס הבינלאומי השנה אנו שואפים לקדם את השיח לגבי מערכות התמיכה
הבין-תחומיות ,לזהות גישות חדשות ויצירתיות תוך שיתוף עמיתים (אנשי הצוות
הרפואי ,הקהילתי ,הסוציאלי והמשפחתי) במרחב המקצועי של הליווי הרוחני ,תוך
הבנת האתגר הייחודי של כל אדם.
הרצאת פתיחה בחסות "ויטאס״ ותינתן על ידי מר אריק ג' .הול ,נשיא ומנכ"ל
,HealthCare Chaplaincy Networkניו יורק ,בנושא :תמיכה ברוח האנושית:
נתונים מחקריים על תפקיד ואפקטיביות הליווי והתמיכה הרוחנית.
הרצאה לזכרו של הרב אלימלך יעקב גלאט ז"ל ,תינתן על ידי חה"כ ד"ר רות
קלדרון ,בנושא :שפת הרוח מייצרת משמעות.
ד"ר ויליאם נייאר ,סגן נשיא ומנהל אסטרטגי ,Atlantic Health System
ניו-ג'רזי ,ידבר על יצירת סביבה מרפאה.
טקס חלוקת תעודות הסמכה למלווים ולמחנכים רוחניים בישראל ,יתקיים בערב
הכנס ,והינו כתר שם טוב לרב פסח קראוס ז"ל ,על תרומתו ארוכת השנים לפיתוח
הליווי הרוחני בארה"ב ובישראל.
במסגרת הכנס של השנה ,אנו שמחים להציע ביקורים וסיורים חווייתיים במספר
תוכניות חדשניות לליווי רוחני ברחבי ישראל.
אנו מבקשים להודות לתמיכה מן היסוד ושותפות רבת שנים של - UJAהפדרציה
של ניו יורק ,בפיתוח ,קידום ומיקצוע תחום הליווי והתמיכה הרוחנית בישראל.
אנו מקווים שהכנס המשותף השנה ,יעמיק את הידע ויחזק את אנשי המקצוע,
יהווה גשר מקצועי ואנושי בין העוסקים בתחום בישראל ובחו"ל ,ויאפשר פריצת
דרך בישראל ,לטובת המסתייעים והמסייעים גם יחד.

צרכים מיוחדים ,קיבלה את פרס לייבהבר לסובלנות דתית ולפלורליזם .הסמכה לרבנות
HUCירושלים ,מנהלת קהילת רימון לבוגרים עם צרכים מיוחדים ,מלווה רוחנית בבית
"פרוטאה בכפר" ,ועמותת קשובות.
היכן נמצאים החוסן והתקווה בסוף החיים? ברגעים האחרונים? במפגש פנים
אל פנים עם המוות? נבדוק דרכים שונות להיפגש עם המוות ,נבחן מה היא
מהותה של התקווה ברגעים אלה בקרב אוכלוסיות שונות .נחווה ביחד טקסט,
טקס ,שירה ,מגע ויצירתיות בראייה אישית ויצירתית .המשתתפים יקבלו אוסף
של מקורות להשראה במפגש אינטימי עם המוות.

החל מיציאת מצרים וכלה בתנועות חברתיות מודרניות (תנועת זכויות האזרח
בארה"ב ,תנועות שלום וצדק בכל רחבי העולם ,ועוד) שירי מחאה ושירי
חירות מסייעים להתמודד עם האתגרים הכרוכים במאבקים חברתיים ,לחגוג
ניצחונות משותפים ,להתפלל לתקווה ולהמשיך למרות הפחד והספקות.
בעת יאוש השבויים שאלו :״איך נשיר את שיר ה׳ על אדמת נכר?״ מיד שרו
״אם אשכחך ירושלים.״ ושירת השיר העניקה תקווה ולימדה אותם איך לשרוד
בגולה .בסדנה זו נבחן את הקשרים בין שירי מחאה וחירות לבין הרפואה
הרוחנית והליווי רוחני .ניישם את העוצמה שיש בשירים אלה ונחברה למצבים
אישיים יותר ולעבודה שלנו כמלווים רוחניים.

בעלת ניסיון רב שנים בטיפולי בחולי סרטן ובני משפחותיהם.
מאז הקמתו של המרכז לסיוע הוליסטי ב ,2007-המרכז מתמחה בטיפולי
מגע מתחום הרפואה המשלימה לחולי סרטן ובני משפחותיהם .הגישה
הטיפולית מבוססת על מחקרים שמוכיחים את יעילותם בהקלה על תופעות
הלוואי של הטיפולים הכימותרפיים למתמודדים ,ועל בני משפחותיהם החווים
את המחלה גם הם .בסדנה תהיה הזדמנות להתנסות בטיפולי מגע כדי
להרגיש כיצד הם מסייעים לעבור ממצב של חרדה והישרדות למצב של
רגיעה והכלה .המגע המרפא חיוני על מנת לאפשר למתמודדים עם המחלה
כלים לחיזוק ושיפור איכות החיים.

האם כל אדם מגיב בדומה לזולתו למצבי חיים ללא חשיבות של דת ,רקע
תרבותי או היסטורי? במה אנחנו שונים? איך ,והאם בכלל שונות זו יכולה

"חיבוק איתן" בעת חירום לילדי דרום הארץ
הרב איתן אקשטיין
הרב איתן אקשטיין הוא המייסד והמנכ"ל של רטורנו ואחד מהמומחים המובילים ביותר
בעולם בתחום ההתמכרויות .בנוסף להיותו עובד סוציאלי ומדריך רכיבה על סוסים ,הרב
אקשטיין מביא עמו ניסיון של 25שנה בטיפול בהתמכרויות .יחד עם הרגישות שלו וההבנה
עמוקה ללבם של אנשים ,הרב אקשטיין הוא הלב והנשמה של פרויקטים רבים ברטורנו.
בעקבות המצב הביטחוני בדרום ישראל — במהלך מבצע צוק איתן ביולי ,2014
התגייסה עמותת רטורנו לפרויקט מיוחד" :חיבוק איתן" ,סמינר של שלושה ימי
רגיעה והפוגה ,המשולבים בהעצמה אישית וגיבוש קבוצתי ,המיועד לנערים
ונערות מאזור הדרום ,בכיתות ט' עד י"ב .אצל רבים מן הצעירים המגיעים
לרטורנו ,מסתבר שהרקע לבעייתם הנו תגובות פוסט טראומטיות ()P.T.S.D
שפיתחו ,בעקבות אירועים דרמטיים שחוו במהלך חייהם .בסדנאות ובפעילויות
המרכז ,נחשפים אנשי המקצוע למגוון תחושות המלוות צעירים אלו ,כגון:
תסכול ,חרדה ,פחד ,חוסר אונים ,חוסר אמון ועוד ,ובכך מצליחים לזהות את
אילו הנמצאים בסיכון גבוה .כחלק משמעותי בעבודת המרכז ,פותח תחום
המניעה .לתפישת המרכז — חיזוק החוסן האישי ופיתוח דרכי ההתמודדות
עם מציאות חיים מורכבת — מסייעים במניעת ה"נפילה" להתמכרויות שונות.
תושבי דרום הארץ סובלים ממצב ביטחוני בלתי נסבל ,הנמשך שנים ללא
הפוגה .גם אם הצליחו להגיע בזמן למרחב מוגן ,עלול המרחב האישי ,הרגשי
והקבוצתי להיפגע .במצב זה — "כל תגובה היא נורמאלית ,למציאות שהיא
לא נורמאלית" .בהרצאה נשמע על הכלים שניתנים לתושבי הדרום כדי
'להתחבר לכוחות' ולפתח חוסן אישי וקהילתי.

שיר הנשמה :להכניס שירה לליווי רוחני
ציונה אחישנה
ציונה אחישנה עובדת כזמרת ,מוסיקאית ומורה לרוחניות יהודית למעלה מעשור .היא
חווה את השירה כדרך רוחנית ,וכהזדמנות להתקרב אל העצמי ,זה לזה ולשם .למדה
CPEעם הרב ג'פרי סילברמן בבית החולים הר ציון .ציונה משלבת שירה בעבודתה עם
המתגוררים בבית אבות "נוף צפת" .פירסמה 7תקליטורים עד כה מלחניה .העבודה
האחרונה שלה מושפעת מסיפוריו של רבי נחמן מברסלב ,והיא מופיעה באופן קבוע
בישראל ,במזרח אירופה ובצפון אמריקה.
סוד החיבור בליווי רוחני קורה כאשר אנחנו נפגשים במרחב מעבר לזמן
ולמקום .אבל כיצד מגיעים למרחב זה? זוהי מתנה הניתנת לעיתים ,כאשר
אנו מצליחים לנשום בחלל שבין לעשות ללהיות ולהקשיב לסיפורו של
האחר בלב פתוח וביראת כבוד לתעלומה של הרצון האנושי .היות והסיפורים
של המלווה משתלבים עם סיפורי המלווים ,תפקיד המלווה הרוחני ללמוד
להרפות מהיררכיה ולאפשר לתודעה להיות שוויונית ומעגלית .במקום הקדוש
הזה ,לפעמים ,עולה שיר .זוהי דרך לספר את הסיפור האישי של המלווה
ושל המלווה ,בחלל זה נפתח מעגל הקשבה שנותן מקום להופעתו של שיר
שמאפשר לחוות את השירה כאתיקה מבריאת העולם ,וגם לקבל כלים
לעבודת המלווים הרוחניים .במפגש ,יוצגו אירועים המדגימים איך שיר יכול
לספק חיבור מעבר לגבולות גיל ,דת ,תרבות ושפה.

אח מוסמך ,מייסד ומנהל עמותת אל-תאג' .חבר בפורום קידום ליווי רוחני רב תרבותי
בגליל .מחבר ספרים ומאמרים בנושא אתיקה רפואית וליווי רוחני לחולה המוסלמי.
חסמים רבים מונעים מהחולה המוסלמי הסופני את התמיכה הרוחנית ,כמו :מחסום השפה ,בורות
הצוות באמונת החולה ובתרבותו ,רגישות בטיפול בחולה מהמין האחר ,צניעות וכיסוי ראש ,העדר
מלווים רוחניים מוסלמים וחוסר מודעות החולה על קיום השירות .על הצוות המטפל להתגבר על
מכשולים אלה בדרך להנגשת תמיכה זו לכל חולה ,למרות קוצר הזמן וחוסר הדרכה לצוות הרפואי
והסיעודי ,אי נוחות לדון עם החולה בנושא ואי הרצון לפעול מחוץ לתחום המומחיות.

לקשיש יהוד-מונוסון של "עלה — העמותה למען הקשיש" .מקדמת את תחום החשיבה
החיובית בקרב האוכלוסייה המבוגרת ,ממפתחי פרויקט "הומור כדרך חיים" במרכזי היום.
מורן מלק ,תואר ראשון B.Aמאוניברסיטת בר-אילן ,רמת גן .עובדת סוציאלית מרכז יום
לקשיש יהוד-מונוסון של "עלה — העמותה למען הקשיש".
הרבה ולרי סטסין ,מלווה רוחנית מוסמכת ובעלת הסמכה לרבנות ממכון שכטר .ולרי יסדה
יחד עם מרים ברקוביץ' את עמותת "קשובות" שמטרתה לקדם את התמיכה הרוחנית
בישראל .עובדת בבית החולים עין כרם ,בבית החולים הצרפתי ובמרכז עלה ביהוד.
תחום התמיכה הרוחנית חדש בישראל ומחייב תהליך רגיש על מנת לשלבה בטיפול באוכלוסיה
הקשישה .בשנים האחרונות אשל פועלת לקידום תכניות לתמיכה רוחנית בתחום שירותים
לזקנים ובני משפחותיהם ,מתוך כוונה להרחיב את הכלים לטיפול ברווחת הזקן בהתמודדויות
המגוונות בשלב זה של מעגל החיים לו ,לבני משפחתו ולצוות .בשנת ,2013אשל יזמה פרויקט
ניסויי מאתגר בששה עשר מרכזי יום ברחבי הארץ .מובילות הפרויקט הארצי באשל יסבירו את
מבנה המיזם ,את קורס הכשרת אנשי הקשר ואת מפגשי הלמידה לתומכים הרוחניים .כל אחת
תציג מנקודת מבטה ,את יישום המיזם בשטח .ביהוד ,שילוב התמיכה הרוחנית יצר מפגשים
חדישים — סדנה לצוות על "מעברי חיים" ,השתלמויות לעובדים זרים על זהות אישית ומקצועית
ויצירת קשרים ומפגש לקהל רחב של בני משפחה והמטפלים ,שהתמקד בנושא התמודדות
המטפלים עם הזדקנות אדם קרוב .במקביל השתלבה התמיכה הרוחנית בקבוצות לימוד
ייחודיות ובעבודת הצוות הקבועה .המיזם אפשר לצוות לבחון את הדרכים בהן התמיכה הרוחנית
מקדמת שינוי ב"תרבות הארגון" .השיח החדש חשף נושאים רגישים הדורשים טיפול כגון :מקום
הנפש בטיפול בקשישים ,היחס של הצוות למוות ,העמקת הקשרים בין אנשי הצוות ועוד.

לרב אלן אברמס תואר שני בתלמוד מבית המדרש לרבנים באמריקה ( )JTSותואר
שני במדיניות ציבורית מאוניברסיטת קולומביה .סופרויזר מוסמך של מלווים רוחניים
בארה''ב ( .)Association of Clinical Pastoral Education supervisorהציג סדנאות רבות וכתב
מאמרים רבים בנושאים של ליווי רוחני וחינוך בשטח .בימים אלה הוא משלים את לימודי
הדוקטורט בחינוך ומדעי היהדות באוניברסיטת ניו יורק ( .)NYUהוא הוסמך בבית המדרש
לרבנים ע''ש זיגלר (התנועה המסורתית) בלוס אנג'לס בשנת .2004הרב אברמס ואשתו
הרב ד''ר מינה ברומברג הם עולים חדשים.
התאוריה של המערכת המשפחתית ,שמדגישה את היות האדם לא רק
פרט בודד אלא תמיד גם חלק ממערכות יחסים ,הפכה בשנים האחרונות
לחלק בלתי נפרד מגישות טיפוליות שונות ,בהקשר הרפואי והפסיכולוגי .גם
רבנים ,כמרים ומלווים רוחניים עשויים למצוא תועלת רבה בשימוש בתיאוריה
ובמושגים של גישת המערכת המשפחתית .ראשית ,ניתן להמחיש את מושגי
היסוד של התיאוריה של המערכת המשפחתית כבר בתיאורים של מערכות
יחסים משפחתיים בתנ"ך ,למשל ביחס בין ה' ובני ישראל ,ובמערכות יחסים
המסובכים של דוד .שנית ,ניתן להמחיש באופן זה את המושגים השימושיים
מאוד של התאוריה כמו "המטופל המזוהה" ו"משולשים יחסיים" .סדנה זו
תספק כלים לחשיבה על נקודות ההשקה בין מערכות יחסים בתנ"ך לבין
מערכות היחסים בהם אנו עוסקים בעבודה הטיפולית.

ילידת ,1965אם לשלושה ילדים ,מתגוררת בחוקוק שבצפון הארץ .החלה דרכה
המקצועית בתחום הביולוגיה והמחקר ,עבדה כמורה לחשבון בבי"ס יסודי ,מתוך בחירה
לעבוד עם אנשים (אמנם צעירים) ולא עם מבחנות .לאחר 3שנות עבודה בהוראה וריכוז,
נסעה עם משפחתה לשנה וחצי להודו ,לתקופה מכוננת של התבוננות שם הגדירה זיו
את רצונה לעבוד עם נשים ,ואת רצונה ליישם בעיסוקיה איכויות ,כמו :נוכחות ,הקשבה,
חמלה .בחרה להתמקצע כ"דולה" – מלווה לידות ,ומאז ,כ 11-שנה ,משמשת דולה
ומרכזת ומלמדת קורסי דולות באוניברסיטת חיפה .לפני כחמש שנים החלה לימודים
בהכשרה לליווי רוחני ב"ברוח" .זיו למדה שנת יסוד ושנת המשך ולאחר מכן שימשה
אסיסטנטית של קורס היסוד ומלווה רוחנית במרכזים הרפואיים שערי צדק ורמב"ם.
במסגרת פיילוט של ג'וינט אשלים הבוחן הרחבת הליווי הרוחני למגוון
אוכלוסיות ,מתקיימת בעפולה קבוצה של הורים לגיל הרך מהקהילה
האתיופית ,שעברו את המסע מאתיופיה לישראל דרך סודן כילדים .רבים
מהם חוו במסע זה חוויות קשות ,אשר מעולם לא דוברו וסופרו ,ואשר לעיתים
מהדהדות חוויות אלו בתקופות חיים של הקמת המשפחה ,גידול הילדים ,וחיי

היומיום .ההשתתפות בקבוצה נותנת מקום וכבוד לסיפור ,להקשבה ולזיכרון
של מסע זה בדרך הליווי הרוחני בהתאמה תרבותית ואישית .ההרצאה תתאר
את ההנחיה המשותפת של זיו רעי-קורן — מלווה רוחנית מוסמכת ,עם מנחה
מהקהילה האתיופית — אילן סאהלו ,יועץ חינוכי ומנחה קבוצות ,ועל תהליך
ה"מסע" של הקבוצה בעקבות ה"מסע" שהיה :החלום על ירושלים ,היציאה
לדרך ,הפרידה מהבית ,הפחד ,האובדנים החלום ושברו ,מציאת משמעות
ותקווה ,ועוד .העיסוק בנושאים משולב בכלים של ליווי רוחני ,קשב ועדות
לסיפור חיים ,קריאה בטקסטים ,יצירת תפילה ותקווה אישית ,בהתאמה
לעולם הרוח האופייני לקהילה האתיופית ,ובשימוש במקורות אתיופיים,
טקסים ומנהגים.

מייק שולץ הוא מנהל השירות לליווי רוחני ברמב"ם בחיפה ,במכון האונקולוגי ,שם נקלט
ב .2009-הוא מלווה רוחני מוסמך בישראל ובארה"ב מטעם ה .NAJC-מחקר קודם שלו בחן
התעניינות בליווי רוחני בקרב מטופלים ישראליים ,בהשוואה למטופלים במדינות אחרות.
חשוב מאד לערב מלווה רוחני באם קיימת מצוקה רוחנית שעלולה להשפיע
במידה רבה על מדדים כמו איכות החיים ,עקה (סטרס) וייאוש .עצם הקיום
של מצוקה רוחנית או כאב רוחני באחוז מסוים של חולי סרטן איננה השאלה,
אלא השאלה היא מהו הביטוי של המצוקה .בכל תרבות ותרבות ,הביטוי יכול
להשתנות .הכלים הקיימים להערכת מצוקה או כאב רוחני פותחו בארה"ב ,ויש
צורך לבדוק את התאמתם בישראל כחלק מפיתוח התחום בישראל .בהרצאה
זו יוצגו תוצאות מחקר שבוצע ברמב"ם שבדק את ההתאמה התרבותית של
שני כלים לאבחנת מצוקה רוחנית.

חברת הכנסת ד"ר רות קלדרון מכהנת כסגנית יושבת ראש הכנסת ,כחברת ועדת חינוך
וחברת ועדת ביקורת המדינה בכנסת ה .19-היא ייסדה בכנסת את השדולה להתחדשות
יהודית אשר מטרתה לתת מקום לזהות יהודית שאינה הלכתית ולהקצות משאבים לתרבות
עברית וחינוך יהודי שאינו אורתודוקסי .בנוסף ,הקימה את השדולה לתרבות פרלמנטרית
אשר מטרתה לקדם את תרבות הדיון ואת האיכות המקצועית של החקיקה והפיקוח על
עבודת הממשלה .כמו כן ,מכהנת חה"כ קלדרון כיושבת ראש אגודת הידידות הפרלמנטרית
ישראל-אוסטרליה .הנושאים העיקריים בהם היא עוסקת בהיותה חברת כנסת הם זהות
המדינה ,כלומר שמירה על האיזון בין המרכיב הדמוקרטי למרכיב היהודי של ישראל .כמו
כן ,עוסקת בהתחדשות יהודית ובנושאי דת ומדינה .למשל ,ניסחה יחד עם חה"כ עליזה
לביא והשרה יעל גרמן את הצעת חוק "ברית הזוגיות האזרחית" שלפיו כל שני תושבים
בישראל שאינם רוצים או אינם יכולים להינשא בנישואין דתיים יוכלו לבוא בברית הזוגיות
ולזכות בכל הזכויות האזרחיות המוענקות כיום לזוג נשוי .כמו כן ,ח"כ קלדרון נאבקת על
מנת שהמדינה תכיר גם בצרכים היהודיים של המגזר החילוני ותיתן לכך ביטוי בחלוקה הוגנת ושיוויונית של
התקציבים .ח"כ קלדרון הקימה בית מדרש בכנסת וכלל הציבור מוזמן מידי שבוע בימי ג' בשעה 15:00להגיע
לכנסת ולקחת חלק בדיון משותף עמה .כמו כן ,היא הנציגה של אזור הגולן ואצבע הגליל בכנסת ומבקרת שם
מידי חודש וחצי .ד"ר קלדרון היא אחת הדמויות המרכזיות בישראל הפועלות למען חיזוק התרבות העברית
וקיום יהדות פלורליסטית .היא זכתה בפרס קרן "אבי – חי" על יוזמתה לייסד את בית המדרש השוויוני "אלול".
עם סיום לימודיה בבית הספר למנהיגות חינוכית של מכון "מנדל" ,הקימה ד"ר קלדרון את "עלמא" – בית
לתרבות עברית המשמש כמוסד חינוכי ,המשלב לימוד יהודי – מסורתי בדרך של בית מדרש ,בד בבד עם לימוד
אקדמי של תרבות כללית ויצירה אמנותית בתל אביב .ד"ר קלדרון ערכה והגישה את התכנית "החדר" בערוץ ,2
שבה דנה עם אורחים שונים על טקסטים בתרבות העברית .כמו כן ,הייתה חברה בוועדה המייעצת של סדרת
הספרים "עם הספר" בהוצאת "ידיעות ספרים" ובועדת "שנהר" ,לבדיקת החינוך היהודי במגזר הממלכתי.
במרץ 2012מונתה קלדרון לראש אגף תרבות וחינוך בספרייה הלאומית .בוגרת תואר ראשון במקרא פילוסופיה
ומחשבת ישראל ב'אורנים' ,תואר שני ושלישי בספרות התלמוד באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים .עבודת
הדוקטורט שלה עוסקת במאפייני האגדה התלמודית .ספרה "השוק .הבית .הלב ".מהווה קריאה אישית באגדות
תלמודיות .ספר זה יצא לאור בשפה האנגלית בשנת 2014בהוצאת JPSובספרדית .ספרה השני "אלפא ביתא
תלמודי" יצא לאור בקיץ .2014הוענקו לה שני תארי דוקטור של כבוד ,האחד על ידי האוניברסיטה העברית
בבוסטון והשני על ידי ה JTS-בניו יורק .חה"כ קלדרון נולדה בשנת 1961והיא אם לשלושה ילדים.
סיפורת האגדה התלמודית היא אוצר של תרגילי מחשבה אמנותיים ,המלווים את הצד ההלכתי של
בניית קהילה בתובנות רוחניות ,רגשיות ,תרבותיות .הסיפור עושה את ההלכה שהיא 'קשה כארז'
רכה יותר וגמישה — 'רכה כקנה' — משום כך נאמר נכתבה התורה בקנה — כדי שסגולת הגמישות
והרכות תישמר בה .בהקשר של ליווי רוחני ,נתבונן בסיפור המתאר מפגש עם הפחד הנורא מכל
של בני האנוש — עם מלאך המוות על ידי כשרון ספרותי יוצא דופן מסייע הסיפור הקצר להעביר
את הדמות הראשית כמו גם את קוראי ושומעי הסיפור ,תהליך של הבנה וקבלה של קיומו של מוות
בעולם .ועל ידי הומור אופייני לחכמים ,מתגלה במלאך המוות בעל אלף העיניים צד חדש.

אנו אסירי תודה על התמיכה הנדיבה של משפחת גלאט להרצאה
הרב אלימלך יעקב גלאט ז"ל היה אחד מן הרבנים הראשונים שהוסמכו כמלווים רוחניים ,וסלל
את הדרך למקצוע הליווי הרוחני כפי שאנו מכירים אותו כיום .מל שימש רב קהילה בדרום ניו ג'רזי
במהלך שנות השמונים והתשעים .כאיש מקצוע הוא הפגין אכפתיות וחמלה ,הציע תקווה לאנשים
בשעותיהם האפלות בבתי חולים ,בתי אבות ובבתי סוהר .עבודתו של הרב גלאט בקהילה שינתה
את חייהם של חולים ואנשי צוות כאחד ,הוא היווה מקור השראה לכל מי שהיה איתו בקשר .מל ניחן
ברגישות ,שנינות ,צניעות וחיוך חם ,בעזרתם -ידע לרומם את הרוח האנושית.
הרב גלאט היה מקור השראה להקמת .NAJCהתעקשותו על קיום סטנדרטים מקצועיים ,הערכת
איכות לתוכניות לימוד והסמכה והשתלמויות ,הביאה להקמתו של ארגון NAJCבשנת ,1989ותרם
לקיבוע מעמדו כארגון לאומי ובינלאומי מוביל -המאשר תוכניות מקצועיות לליווי ותמיכה רוחנית.
לכבוד לנו להמשיך את מורשתו של הרב גלאט גם השנה ,ולהקדיש את הרצאתה של חה"כ ד"ר
רות קלדרון לזכרו .הכנס השנתי הישראלי ה 11-לליווי רוחני בשיתוף עם הכנס השנתי ה 26-של
NAJCמתקיים השנה בעיר ירושלים ,שמל כל כך אהב .אנו מודים לגב' רבקה פרנק ,ולמשפחתו

ד"ר שלום הוא יליד קנדה .עלה לארץ כנער ,סיים תואר BScבאוניברסיטה העברית
ושרת בצה"ל כצנחן .הוא חזר לקנדה ,למד רפואה והתמחה ברפואת המשפחה
ב .University of Western Ontario -עבד תקופה קצרה כרופא כפרבאונטריו .כשחזר
לארץ התחיל לעבוד בשרותי בריאות כללית ובמקביל סיים תואר במערכות בריאות
באוניברסיטת בן גוריון; כמו כן סיים קורס בטיפול תומך באוניברסיטת הרווארד .הוא
כיהן כמנהל רפואי של הוספיס גליל עליון מעל 10שנים ועובד כרופא ומנהל רפואי
בבית אבות נוף הרים שבקיבוץ יחיעם מאז הקמתו .הוא מלמד בבית ספר לרפואה
באוניברסיטת בר אילן ,בצפת וכיועץ פליאטיבי לעמותת ישראלס .הוא זכה בפרסים
רבים ,האחרון בהם הוא "אות מופת למסירות ולמקצועיות" בחסות עמותת תשקופת
מעגן .הוא נשואי ואב לשניים .תחומי התעניינותו כוללים מתן תמיכה רוחנית לחולים אשר
מתמודדים עם מחלה מסכנת חיים .לאחרונה הרצה בקנדה ובסין בנושא מתן טיפול
תומך במסגרת בית אבות.

כרם .השתלבה בפרויקט של הג'וינט במרכז יום ביהוד .במקביל עמלה על פיתוח עמותת
קשובות ויצירת קשרים לשילוב מקצוע התמיכה הרוחנית במסגרות של טיפול תומך ,בתי

דוקטורנט בפקולטה למדעי הבריאות באוניברסיטת בן גוריון .חוקר בעיקר את תחום
הרוחניות והבריאות בדגש על ליווי רוחני.
בהרצאה זו יוצגו תוכניות שמפעילים גופים שונים בתחום הליווי הרוחני ,והמאופיינים בכך שאינם
מיועדים להכשיר מקצועית מלווים רוחניים ,אלא להעשיר אנשים שונים בנקודת המבט ובכלים
שונים של הליווי והתמיכה הרוחנית .עמידה על מאפיינים ייחודיים של התוכניות השונות ,וההבדל
בינם לבין הכשרות מקצועיות של מלווים רוחניים .מיקוד בתכנית "ברקאי" המעשירה רבני קהילות
במבט ובכלים של הליווי הרוחני ,והצגת מחקר אשר בדק את בוגרי המחזור הראשון של תכנית זו.

שירותים ספציפיים המעניקים טיפול ייחודי לסוג כזה של שכול .ג'וינט אשלים
בשיתוף עם משרד הרווחה יצאו בפיילוט חדשני המאפשר ליווי פרטני וקבוצתי

המודל לעבודת גוף-נפש-רוח עם אנשים החולים בסרטן מיושם משנת 2003
ועד היום בקבוצות של "האגודה למלחמה בסרטן ".המודל הדינמו-הוליסטי,
הוא פרי למידה ,התנסות אישית ועבודה של 40שנה במערכת הבריאות
הפורמלית ,במרחב הרפואה המשלימה וברוחניות .המודל מתבסס בחלק
המתודולוגי על תבנית הוליסטית ,The Wellness Continuumשל )AHHA
.)American Holistic Health Associationבהתאם לתבנית זו ,איכות חייו
של האדם ובריאותו נקבעת על ידי ששה מימדי חיים ,הפיזי ,הרגשי ,המנטאלי,
החברתי ,הסביבתי והרוחני .בחלק התיאורטי ,יובאו מאפיינים של ששה

רוחני בבתי ספר באזור הצפון מטעם קרן תל"י ,עורך טקסי חיים יהודיים בדגש רוחני
ומוסיקאלי בכל רחבי הארץ ,מוסיקאי העוסק במוסיקה יהודית מתחדשת ,מרצה בנושאי
יהדות ,רוחניות וקבלה ,שדרן רדיו .בעבר :רב מייסד של קהילת הלב בתל אביב ,מורה

המודל המכונה "ישיר" ,הוא משמש כמלווה רוחני במרכז קידום נוער במעלות-תרשיחא בפיילוט הנערך
מטעם ג'וינט אשלים .במסגרת המודל הראשון אור מלווה יחידים ,זוגות ,משפחות ,וחברי קהילה ברגעים
ותהליכים משמעותיים — משמחים וכואבים — במהלך חייהם .במקרים אלו ארגז הכלים של הליווי הרוחני
משתלב בעבודה הרבנית ומשמש לדיוק ולהעצמה של התפקיד הרבני .במסגרת המודל השני הרב
מתנסה בהטמעת ארגז הכלים של הליווי הרוחני בעבודה עם בני נוער המכונה "נוער מנותק" ועם אנשי
הצוות העובדים עימם :מורים ומדריכים .ההרצאה תבקש להשוות בין שתי הגישות הללו לעבודת הליווי
הרוחני .באמצעות סיפורים ודוגמאות מהשטח ,ייבחנו יתרונות וחסרונות ,הצלחות ,קשיים ואתגרים העולים
מהעבודה בכל אחד מהמודלים הללו בהקשרים של הטמעת תפישות העולם של תחום הליווי הרוחני
בקהלים עימם בא במגע בחברה הישראלית .בתוך כך יבקש לשתף את הקהל בשאלת גיבוש הזהות
המקצועית כרב וכמלווה רוחני :עד כמה מדובר בתחומים מקצועיים משתלבים או נפרדים ,מה ניתן להרוויח
או להפסיד מאימוצם של כל אחד מהמודלים הללו ,וכיצד נתפשת עבודת המלווה הרוחני בכל אחד מהם.

"ולשון חכמים מרפא" בהכשרת מלווים רוחניים בשכטר
ד"ר עינת רמון ,מלווה רוחנית מוסמכת SCP-C
ד"ר עינת רמון (בעלת תואר ד"ר במדעי הדתות מאונ' סטנפורד ומלווה רוחנית מוסמכת
בישראל) היא המייסדת ,המנהלת והמדריכה של תכנית מרפא להכשרת מלווים רוחניים
במסגרת לימודי המוסמך של מכון שכטר למדעי היהדות .בין השנים 2013-2009היתה
יו"ר ועדת מקצוע של רשת הארגונים ללווי רוחני ,ובתוקף תפקידה זה ריכזה את ניסוח
עקרונות ההכשרה של מלווים רוחניים בישראל ואת הקוד האתי של המקצוע .כיום יו"ר
ועדת מקצוע בעמותה לליווי רוחני בישראל ,ע”ר.
במסגרת הסדנה נתוודע למבנה הלימודי — מקצועי של הכשרת מלווים רוחניים בתכנית האקדמית
"מרפא" במכון שכטר .בשלב השני נחווה תוך כדי לימוד של מדרש או קטע מתוך הגות פילוסופית,
את ההיבט הלימודי של גיבוש השקפת עולם בנושאים הנוגעים לעבודת המלווה הרוחני בכלל
ובישראל בפרט .נושא זה הוא חלק מתכנית הלימודים.

עובדת סוציאלית ,מטפלת משפחתית ,MFTמלווה רוחנית מוסמכת ,מדריכה ומנחה .נאוה
הינה בעלת ניסיון רב שנים בעבודה עם הורים וילדים בגיל הרך ,הדרכת אנשי מקצוע
בתחום והדרכת סטודנטים לעבודה סוציאלית במסגרת הכשרה מעשית .בהתבסס על
מודל אשר עסקה בו בארה"ב ,פיתחה במסגרת אשלים ובשותפות משרד הרווחה ומשרד
החינוך את תכנית "משפחות" תכנית תמיכה ,הדרכה וליווי להורים אשר להם ילדים בגיל
הרך — המופעלת היום ברחבי הארץ ע"י משרד הרווחה ,גם במסגרת התכנית הלאומית:
"התחלה טובה" .בשנת 2005עברה הכשרה בתמיכה רוחנית בארץ ובחו"ל ובהמשך לימדה
בקורס תמיכה רוחנית בארגון "ברוח" במרכז רפואי שערי צדק .נאוה מדריכה בסופרויז'ן
מלווים רוחניים בעבודתם במחלקות רפואיות ובעבודה עם הורים לילדים עם צרכים
מיוחדים ,בארגון "קשר" בו היא מרכזת את תחום הליווי הרוחני .כיום ,נאוה עובדת בג'וינט
אשלים ביחידה לגיל הרך ,בפיתוח עבודה עם הורים לגיל הרך ותוכניות חדשניות בליווי
הרוחני בעבודה עם אוכלוסיות נוער ,צעירים ומשפחותיהם הנמצאים במשבר במצוקה
ובסיכון ,וכמו כן מלווה את ג'וינט אשל בתהליך הפיתוח של הליווי הרוחני לזקנים בישראל.

מקצוע הליווי הרוחני בארה"ב מאופיין ברובו על ידי אנשי דת העוברים הכשרה
נוספת לליווי רוחני ,זאת לעומת הליווי הרוחני בישראל המאופיין בבעלי ניסיון
חיים ושאר רוח ,העוברים הכשרה לתחום .המעבר למלווים רוחניים שאינם
בהכרח אנשי דת ,מציב אתגרים לליווי הרוחני ופותח מרחב שאלות באשר
לשימוש בכלים בעלי גוון רוחני/דתי בתהליך הליווי הרוחני .השימוש ביצירת
תפילה אישית מתגלה ככלי נפלא ומתאים לכלל האוכלוסיות בארץ ,החוצה
הבדלי רקע דת ,תרבות ומגדר ומתאים מאד לליווי הרוחני על כל היבטיו :ככלי
למלווה הרוחני עצמו וה self careשלו וככלי בתוך הליווי הן לשעות כאב ,עצב
וזעקה ,הן לזיקוק החלום ,התקווה והמשמעות והן כמתנה וברכה מהמלווה
לאדם שאותו מלווה .בסדנה נקרא בחברותות מקורות יהודים ,ישראלים
ואוניברסליים הקשורים ליצירת תפילה אישית ,נעבור תהליך תשומת לב
והתכווננות לתפילתנו האישית ,נתאמן ביצירה ודיוק של תפילתנו ונרחיב אותה
באמצעות מדיטציה מהאישי ביותר אל מעגלים קרובים ורחוקים מעולמנו.

מטפלת הוליסטית .מלווה אנשים חולים ובריאים באתגרי החיים לתמיכה והעצמה
נפשית ורוחנית במגוון כלים מעולם הרוח .בארבע השנים האחרונות מלווה קשישים
בהתמודדות עם אתגרי-הזקנה ,ואנשים המתמודדים עם מחלות כרוניות או מאיימות
חיים .במקביל מרצה ומלמדת קורסים לקהל הרחב כדי לחשוף אותם לכלים של עולם
התמיכה הרוחנית ולעורר מודעות והשראה ביחס שלנו כחברה למחלה ,זקנה ומוות.
שואבת השראה ממקורות רוחניים מגוונים ,ממורים ,תרבויות ,דתות ושיטות שונות ,אותן
היא מעבדת לתפישה אינטגרטיבית ואישית אשר יכולה להכיל מגוון אנשים מתרבויות
ודעות שונות.
אתי הילסום היתה אישה יהודיה הולנדית צעירה ,שחיתה באמסטרדם
בתקופת מלחמת העולם השנייה .בכישרון פואטי היא מתארת את חייה ואת
ההתמודדות שלה עם החיים והמוות והופכת את יומניה לאוצר יקר עבור
האנושות .לפני כ 10-שנים קראה הלה במאמר פיסקה על אתי הילסום
ומאז יומניה מלווים אותה כמקור להשראה רוחנית ,צמיחה של הלב ומורה
להתמודדות נכונה עם מצבי קיצון .היא משתמשת בטקסטים שלה עבורה,

אמל חמאתי ,ילידת הארץ ,גדלה בנצרת ,למדה בבית ספר במנזר "תירה סנטה",
גרה בבית ג'אלה בירושלים .בוגרת תואר ראשון בחינוך מיוחד וחינוך רגיל עם
התמחות אומנותיות ממכללת דוד ילין .תואר שני בניהול וארגון מערכות חינוך במרכז

דנה הרוש ,ילידת הארץ ,ירושלים ,גרה במבשרת ציון .בוגרת תואר ראשון באנגלית
ותעודת הוראה בחינוך מיוחד ובעלת הכשרה בגינון טיפולי .מורה בביה"ס בבית-חולים
הרצוג ובביה"ס של בית-חולים הדסה במחלקה האונקולוגית והפסיכיאטרית .מפתחת
מערך טיפול של בית הספר לילדים בדרכם האחרונה.
מחלקת ילדים מונשמים בהרצוג היא דוגמא למופת של טיפול בינתחומי
לאוכלוסיה רב-תרבותית .העבודה משלבת טיפול רפואי ,פרא-רפואי ,רגשי,
חברתי ,חינוכי וליווי רוחני .הסיפורים האלה משקפים את האתגרים המיוחדים
למחלקת הילדים המונשמים .הם סיפורים של שיתוף פעולה ,יצירתיות,
ורגישות לתרבויות שונות.

אדם מרקע תרבותי ומנטלי שונה משל המלווה המדבר ב"שפה" הזרה לו.
במפגש ננסה להבין ולזהות מהי השפה המתאימה לשיח עם אדם זה ,במיוחד
במצבים בהם אין בידיו של המלווה ידע וכלים לשימוש ב"שפה התרבותית"
המתבקשת .האם יש דרך לליווי מוצלח במקרה שכזה? האם יש סוג של שפה
אוניברסאלית? דרך טקסט מספר ה"זוהר" ,פרשת בהעלותך ,ננסה להבין
את מהותו של דיאלוג ללא מילים .נשווה את הטקסט זה לשירה מהתרבות
הרוסית (בתרגום לעברית ולאנגלית) .נדון בדילמה האם גישה כזו יכולה

We often have difficulty when working with people who come
from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. We
begin by searching for language which is most appropriate for that
individual. This language may be new to us and challenge our skills
and understanding of the other’s culture. How may we accompany
people in despair when they are so different? Is there a universal
language of caring? We will learn a text from the Zohar, chapter
B’Haalotcha, to explore the nature of dialogue without words.
We will compare the texts to poetry from Russian literature (with
Hebrew and English translation)

Hila Eshhar, 45, spiritual care provider SCP-C and Holistic Therapist. Provide
support to sick and healthy people to enable spiritual growth with variety
of spiritual tools. At the last 4 years I work mainly with elderly people and
for people who challenged by chronic and life threatening disease. I teach
courses about those issues to inspire and raise consciousness as society to
sickness, death, old age. I am inspired by many spiritual sources: different
religions, cultures, gurus and spiritual methods which I integrate to kind of
approach which contains wide variety of people.
Etty Hillesum was a young Dutch Jewish woman who lived in
Amsterdam during Second World War. With poetic talent she
describes her life and the way she dealt with life and death which
makes it a treasure for humanity. When I read her diary, it became
a source for spiritual inspiration and inner growth and a guide for
coping with extreme life challenges. I use her text for myself to
inspire my soul with faith and direct connection with God, and also
with others whom I meet, the elderly and sick, as a source of light
and hope.

1982 Since 1982 social worker in Herzog hospital and a coordinator of the
spiritual care program.
The children's chronic respiratory unit at Herzog is a wonderful
example of inter-disciplinary partnership in order to serve the
needs of a multicultural population. These three stories illustrate the
remarkable results achieved when staff professionals work creatively
in partnership for the medical, para-medical, emotional, social,
educational, cultural and spiritual needs of children and their families.

Creating Personal Prayer
as a Spiritual Support Tool for Varied Populations

Naava is a social worker and family therapist, group facilitator and supervisor
for parents and professionals. She has over 25 years of experience working
with parents of young children and the staff working with them, including
supervising social work students and program director. During the past few
years, Naava has begun bringing the two fields – of spirituality and working
with families — together working with “kesher” developing and facilitating
parent spiritual support groups for parents of children with special needs
as well as a “parent to parent “ spiritual training course. On staff in JDC
Ashalim, Naava is the professional leader for the process of developing and
incorporating spirituality into the care for at risk populations.
While the Spiritual/Pastoral Care in the US continues to be mostly
by clergy, who then train as chaplains, Israeli spiritual care givers are
mostly people with life experience and a spiritual background and
practice of their own.This transformation to Spiritual Care Providers
who are not necessarily religious has challenged the use of some
spiritual/religious aspects in Spiritual Care. The creating of personal
prayer has proven to be a wonderful tool for all people regardless
of background, culture and definitions, and provides a tool for many
aspects in Spiritual Care: self care for the Spiritual Care Provider
themselves, offered in times of pain and sadness as well as hope
and dreams and as a gift and blessing. In this workshop, we will read
in chavrutot about creating personal care in ancient Jewish as well
as Israeli and universal texts then practice mindful prayer from the
most personal to wider circles around us.

of Israeli Spiritual Caretakers at the Schechter Institute

Einat Ramon, PhD in Religious Studies, Stanford University, 2000 and an
SCP-C in Israel. Is the founder, director and the spiritual care educator of the
academic Marpeh Israeli CPE program at the Schechter Institute. between
2009 — 2013 she has been the chairperson of the professional committee
of the ISCN and in that capacity coordinated the writing of the Israeli CPE
standards and ethical code. Today the Chairperson of the professional
committee of The Association for Spiritual Care in Israel.
Within the workshop on Marpeh – words that heal – we will explore
the professional structure of training Spiritual Caregivers within an
academic context at Schechter. Following a general introduction to
the program and how it trains Israeli chaplains, we shall experience
(through learning in Havrutta) the use of philosophy and Midrash
(an important element in their training) as they "theologically
reflect," on themes that are central to the field of chaplaincy within
an Israeli context.

cycle events throughout Israel, Teacher of Judaism, Jewish spirituality
and Kabbalah, musician specializing in Jewish renewal liturgy, and radio
broadcaster. In the past: Founding Rabbi, Kehilat Halev in Tel Aviv, Teacher
at the Conversion (Giyur) school of the Reform Movement in Beit Daniel,

This lecture will try to describe two models of Pastoral Care which I have
been experiencing in the past few years: The rabbinic model and the "direct"
model. In the rabbinic model, chaplaincy is incorporated into the professional
rabbinic work whether as a community rabbi or as a conductor of life
cycle events. In the model which I call "direct", I serve as chaplain in youth
advancement in Maalot Tarshicha as part of a pilot project carried out by JointAshalim. In the framework of the first model I accompany individuals, couples,
families and congregation members in meaningful processes and moments –
happy or painful – in the course of their lives. In such instances the chaplain's
toolbox is used to empower the rabbinic position. In the framework of the
second model I experience incorporating the chaplaincy toolbox working with
"disconnected youths" as well as with the staff who works with them, teachers
and counselors. This lecture will compare and contrast these two attitudes
toward the chaplain's work. Using stories and examples from the field, I will
try to point out pros and cons, successes, difficulties and challenges that
arise through working in each of these models in the contexts of assimilating
concepts from the world of Pastoral Care in Israeli society. Amidst that, I will
attempt to share with the audience the question of formulating my professional
identity as rabbi and as chaplain: how are these in fact two integrated or rather
separated professional fields, what can be lost or gained by adopting each
model, and how is pastoral care perceived in each of these models.

Continuum," a holistic format of AHHA: Man's wellness\health is
determined by 6 life dimensions, physical, emotional, mental, social,
environmental, and spiritual. Theoretically, the model presents
6 principles which characterize the various holistic approaches.
The presentation portrays the subject by describing one way of
professional and interdisciplinary methodologies and approaches,
and community work in its various phases, in times of crisis and

Rabbi Dr. Joseph S. Ozarowski is Rabbinic Counselor and Chaplain for Jewish
Child and Family Services of Chicago and Jewish Chaplain at Skokie Hospital,
Rabbi Ozarowski was cited by Chicago Jewish News as a “Top Jewish
Chicagoan of 2013,” and received the “Rabbi Mordechai Simon Award” from
the Chicago Board of Rabbis. An engaging, nationally known teacher and
speaker, he has served congregations in Pennsylvania, California and the
New York area. Rabbi Dr. Ozarowski is a Board Certified Chaplain (NAJC). He
received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University of Chicago, his
rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Theological College and his doctorate from
Lancaster (PA) Theological Seminary. A prolific author, Rabbi Ozarowski coauthored Common Ground, (1998, Jason Aronson) and has written numerous
articles. His first book, To Walk in God’s Ways — Jewish Pastoral Perspectives
on Illness and Bereavement, (hard cover 1995, Jason Aronson, paperback
2004, Rowman and Littlefield) is considered a standard in the field of Judaism
and Pastoral Care. Rabbi Ozarowski is married to Ashira (nee Rapoport), has
four children and twelve grandchildren.
This session will look at some of the classic Jewish texts dealing with
nechama, focusing on how Jewish tradition gives us a framework for
facing loss. We will look at some of the psycho-social implications of
these texts and practices. Some cases will be discussed within this
context. We will also look at parallel frameworks for how the Jewish
people, communally, have faced loss, created comfort and found the
resilience to go on.

A Unique Model of Individual Spiritual Support
for Family Members of Murder Victims
Dr. Avigail Eitam-Bach
I was born in Jerusalem. I did my PhD in psychology and philosophy at the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I took the diploma program "Mezorim" in
counseling and spiritual support at Hebrew Union College. I am a graduate
of a mentoring program in psycho-pedagogy at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. In recent years, on behalf of the JDC, I have been involved with
spiritual caregiving to families of murder victims and a member of a team
writing a manual of spiritual tools for grief and loss in early childhood. At
Hadassah Hospital, Mt. Scopus, (on behalf of "Haverut") I advise a volunteer
group that works with patients in the rehabilitation department. I also provide
individual spiritual support to patients and their families.
In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of murder
cases in Israel. The nature of the killings has changed dramatically;
they have broken out of the underworld and now penetrate and
affect all social strata.Naturally, the family members of the victims
need support and assistance. Yet Israel has very few agencies that
provide treatment for this specific type of bereavement. "Ashalim"
Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in cooperation with the
Ministry of Social Affairs has created an innovative pilot program
which provides individual support to family members of victims. In
this talk, I will present the basic principles underlying this program
of spiritual care intervention. I will give examples from Hebrew
literature and Jewish tradition that can enrich the spiritual journey.
I will also suggest texts from relevant sources for this particular
kind of grief and bereavement counseling and will demonstrate the
process of spiritual guidance used in this program.

Rabbi Valérie Stessin earned M.A. degrees in Jewish Studies and was
ordained by Schechter. She studied C.P.E. in Israel at Schechter and in the
U.S. at R.W. Johnson Hospital, the Jewish Theological Seminary and Hebrew
Senior Life. Valerie founded Kashouvot with Rabbi Miriam Berkowitz to
develop the field of Pastoral Care in Israel.
The presenters will compare different models of Pastoral Care
in Hospitals. We will begin with a review of the introduction of
Chaplaincy in the States. We will present models of Pastoral care
in four different frameworks: Robert Wood Johnson University
Hospital in New Jersey, Hebrew Senior Life in Boston, Saint Louis
French Hospital and Hadassah Ein Kerem in Jerusalem. We will
compare the roles of chaplains, their involvement in the medical staff
and focus on opportunities and challenges. We will discuss with the

Informal Spiritual Care Enrichment Programs

In this lecture we will present existing spiritual care programs, which
are not characterized as formal training, which give a spiritual care
diploma. However, they are designated to enrich people in the
field, with the tools and special view point of spiritual care. We will
present the different aspects of those programs in Israel and what
each one of them contributes to the practical work. We will focus
on the “Barkai” Program, which enriches community Rabbis with
spiritual care tools. We will present research which assessed the first
cycle of graduates of this program. In the last part, we will deal with
arguments “For and Against” those enrichment programs.

in a Healing Environment

For the past four years, Atlantic Health Systems has been working
to create a model of “integrative medicine”. This model recognizes
the central role of spirituality in the healing process. As part of this
initiative we are expanding our connection with diverse communities
of faith by establishing Faith Community Health Partnerships. In
these relationships, the healthcare system is training liaisons and faith
community nurses to provide health education and supports in the
faith communities and to link up communication between the health
care system and those communities when a community member is
hospitalized. Our partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater
MetroWest trains lay leadership and volunteers in the delivery of
“bikur cholim”. This presentation focuses on how organizations can
create a sustainable partnership between healthcare providers and
faith-based communities.

Innovations in Spiritual Care:

As the field of Spiritual Care evolves in Israel, it is incumbent on
providers to find new and innovative ways to overcome barriers
to care. Web-based chaplaincy support holds great potential for
reaching the under-served or un-initiated across many sectors of
Israeli society. HealthCare Chaplaincy Network is at the forefront of
developing this unique model of service with ChaplainsOnHand™
and its Chat With a Chaplain feature: Within a few months of its
launch, the site has had tens of thousands of visitors from over 100
countries and has been able to offer spiritual support via phone and
e-mail. This workshop will outline HCCN’s process for developing
this new model, including marketing initiatives, technological, legal,
and ethical considerations and development of best practices.
Participants will have the opportunity to consider the challenges
and opportunities this model may offer for advancing Spiritual Care
and support in Israel.

Interfaith Chapel Prayer Ministry model
Abby Abildness & Dr. Gregory Archibald
Abby Abildness is Executive Director of Healing Tree International and is an ordained
pastor and former Behavioral Science Professor at Hershey Medical Center of
Pennsylvania State University, and former professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling
at Myerstown Evangelical Theological Seminary. Dr. Greg Archibald, MD, CCFP, FCFP,
IIWCC is a Canadian family doctor who currently holds the position of Professor and
Head of the Department of Family Medicine, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia,
Canada. He has practiced full scope family practice in Atlantic Canada for 34 years with
half of that time in private practice and the other in academic practice. He has held
many regional and national academic roles through the College of Family Physicians
of Canada and currently is President of the Canadian Association of Wound Care, a
volunteer national wound healing organization.
Dr. Archibald has practiced and taught for thirty four year with various clinical
experiences from maternity and child care to complex chronic disease and palliative
care. His perspective on suffering and healing arise from roles in addiction medicine,
emergency /trauma care and organized stroke care through teaching and authorship
in theses domains. Establishing long term therapeutic relationships has been the focus
of his practice and mentorship in the academic world. He has invested a significant
component of his life's work in developing effective practice models by administrative
leadership resulting in his role as Head of Family Medicine, Dalhousie University,
one of Canada's 17 accredited medical schools. Dr. Archibald's international work in
wound healing represents a cultivated interest in this field as a national speaker. From
a personal perspective, his holistic approach to healing has been expressed through
focusing on the spiritual history and perceptions of patients. He has been involved with
the Order of Saint Luke, a lay healing order, for many years as a community servant of
prayer for those seeking to draw on christ-centred healing in combination with medical
care so as to maximize body, mind and spirit wellness.
Healing Tree International staff will present an interfaith model of spiritual care based on
the interfaith chapel prayer model founded at Pennsylvania State University's Hershey
Medical Center Chapel by Abby H. Abildness. This interfaith healing model in hospital
chapels and other medical care facilities utilizes trained healing prayer ministers in a
soothing meditative worship environment where spiritual care themes are presented, and
pastoral chaplaincy is offered to patients, families and staff.This approach demonstrates the
love of God for patients and families as a healing refuge in their time of need. The theme
is based on God’s words to Israel in Exodus 15:26 “I AM the Lord who heals you”. The
HTI paradigm, which is being replicated in medical centers around the world, is impacting
traditional medical care by enhancing healing of body, mind, spirit, and family relationships
through healing prayer. Hadassah Medical Center is now considering its implementation
since the passing of the new Knesset law mandating interfaith chapels in Israeli hospitals.

Spiritual Assessment: The Physician’s Role
Dr. Barry M. Kinzbrunner & Dr. James Shalom
Barry M. Kinzbrunner, M.D., FACP, FAAHPM, is Executive Vice President and Chief Medical
Officer for Vitas Healthcare Corporation of Miami, Florida. He is board certified in Internal
Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine and he was ordained as
an Orthodox Rabbi in Jerusalem, Israel in 2002. During his 30-year career in hospice and
palliative medicine, Dr. Kinzbrunner has spoken and published extensively on the care of
patients at the end of life, including a textbook entitled “End of Life Care: A Practical Guide,”
which was published in early 2011. Dr. Kinzbrunner has also developed expertise in end
of life care issues pertaining to patients of the Jewish faith and has published and lectured
extensively in this area. Since 1998, he has been consulting with JDC-Eshel in Israel to help
develop hospice, palliative care, and spiritual care services in Israel.
Dr. Shalom was born in Canada. He made Aliya as a young adult, graduated with a BSc.
from the Hebrew University and completed his Israeli army service. Returning to Canada he
completed Medical School and Specialization in Family Medicine at the University of Western
Ontario and worked briefly in semi-rural Ontario. Returning to Israel he began working for
the Clalit Health Fund, completed a Masters of Health Systems from Ben Gurion University
and a program at Harvard University entitled “Palliative Care Education and Practice”. He was
Medical Director of Hospice Upper Galilee for over 10 years and of Nof Harim Nursing Home
in Kibbutz Yehiam since its inception. He is a Clinical Instructor at Bar Ilan University School of
Medicine. He has received numerous awards the last one being Life’s Door Caring Professional
Award Life’s Door 2014. He is married with 2 children. His present interests include helping
patients deal with spiritual distress in the context of facing a life threatening illness. He recently
lectured in Canada and China on provision of Palliative care for nursing home residents.
Physicians are increasingly recognizing the importance of assessing patients, especially
those who are either chronically or terminally ill, for spiritual distress as part of their clinical
evaluation. With this in mind, various tools have been developed to assist physicians in
formulating the right types of questions to ask patients in order to evaluate their spiritual
needs. However, often times, either the physician, the patient and/or family, or sometimes
both, perceive that there are more immediate patient needs, such as uncontrolled physical
symptoms or adjustment to a new environment such as a nursing home, that suggest
postponing the spiritual assessment to a later date. When that happens, the timing and
structure of any spiritual assessment is much less certain, and physicians may require
additional guidance to understand how to best proceed in such circumstances. This
presentation will first review some of the current spiritual assessment tools that physicians
currently utilize to perform spiritual assessments at the time of initial patient evaluation. A
spiritual assessment model that is better suited for situations in which the initial assessment
was postponed will then be discussed and illustrated by a case presentation.

Dr. Ruth Calderon, MK
Rabbi Melvin J. Glatt z"l was one of the first US certified Jewish chaplains and paved
the way for chaplaincy as a profession that we know it to be today. Mel served as a
community based chaplain in the southern New Jersey area during the 80's and 90's.
As a consummate professional, he displayed caring and compassion, offering hope to
people in their darkest hours, in hospitals, nursing homes and in prisons. Rabbi Glatt's
work in the community changed the lives of patients and staff alike, as he inspired all
with whom he was in contact. Mel, with his sensitivity, quick wit and magnanimous smile
knew how to address the human condition and uplift the spirit.
Rabbi Glatt was an inspiration for the founding of NAJC. His insistence on
professional standards, accreditation and continuing education led to the founding of
NAJC in 1989 and its acceptance as a national and international certifying body of
professional chaplains.
We are honored to continue the legacy of Rabbi Glatt in this year’s the Rabbi Melvin
J. Glatt Memorial Lecture, featuring the esteemed Dr. Ruth Calderon. The 11th
Annual Israel Spiritual Care Conference, in joining the 26th Annual NAJC conference
is a first ever landmark event, taking place in the city of Jerusalem, which Mel loved.
We are grateful to the support of Rivkah Frank and Rabbi Glatt's family for their

Spirituality as a Path to Meaning
The Rabbi Melvin J. Glatt Memorial Lecture
M.K. Dr. Ruth Calderon
M.K. Dr. Ruth Calderon serves as Member of Knesset in the Israeli Parliament.
In this capacity, she is Deputy Chairperson of the Knesset, as well as a
member of the education committee and state control committee. She
initiated a constitutional law proposal aiming to anchor Israel’s
democratic and Jewish values based on the Israeli declaration
of independence which emphasizes equality, diversity and
freedom of religion. Calderon is also Chairperson and founder
of the lobby for Jewish renewal at the Knesset as well as the
lobby for parliamentary culture. Moreover, Calderon is Head
of the Australia-Israel Friendship Association. Dr. Calderon is
one of Israel's leading figures spearheading efforts to revive
Hebrew Culture and a pluralistic Israeli-Jewish identity. In
1989, Dr. Calderon was a pioneer when she established the
first Israeli secular, pluralistic and egalitarian Bet Midrash for
women and men, with an Orthodox colleague. She then went
on to host a TV show on classic and modern Jewish texts and published
several writings and books. In 1996 Calderon founded ALMA — Home for
Hebrew Culture which serves as a cultural and studies center for Jewish texts.
In her last capacity, Dr. Calderon was Head of the cultural and education
department at the Israeli national library. Dr. Ruth Calderon is the author of
"A Bride for One Night" a personal homiletic reading of Talmudic legends
(2001), which was be published by JPS in English this year (2014). Her second
book “Talmudic Alpha Beta” came out in Hebrew this year as well (2014).
Calderon received her PhD in Talmudic literature at the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem. She is also a graduate of the first class of the Mandel School
for Educational Leadership and a recipient of the prestigious Avi Chai Prize
in recognition of her contribution to the propagation of the legacy of Israel.
Dr. Calderon was conferred an honorary degree from Hebrew College, an
accredited college of Jewish studies near Boston, as well as a degree of
doctor of humane letters, Honoris Causa from the Board of Trustees of The
Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS).

Conversations About Aging and Loss
Rabbi Judi Ehrlich
Judi Ehrlich was ordained at the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College,
Newton, Massachusetts. She holds an MA degree in Counseling Psychology,
an MA in Jewish Education, and is a certified interfaith chaplain. She is a
rabbi and chaplain at NewBridge on the Charles, a continuing care retirement
community in Dedham, MA, where she provides pastoral care and is part of
the palliative care team in the rehabilitation unit. She teaches Torah, works
with residents and their families on end of life challenges, and facilitates a
support group on aging and loss.
This workshop will support the professional development of
chaplains, by enhancing group leadership skills, in establishing and
facilitating an ongoing support group for individuals experiencing
the challenges of aging and loss. We will focus on providing spiritual
support in a group setting, to elders experiencing diminished
mobility, vision, and hearing; adjusting to widowhood, losing friends
and family, transiting from home to institutional living, facing their own
mortality, and discussing end of life issues with family. We will develop
techniques for cultivating an environment in which participants are
empowered to share their anxiety and fears while supporting each
other. We will focus on issues of confidentiality, group dynamics, and
maintaining safe discussion guidelines and boundaries. In addition,
we will discuss the impact of these conversations on the chaplain's
own spirituality and self-care. Although this workshop focuses on an
older demographic, the skills acquired are applicable to all support
groups for adults dealing with illness and loss.

How Israelis Express Spiritual Distress
SCP-C Mike Schultz, BCC
Mike Schultz is the Director of Spiritual Care at Rambam, in Haifa, in the
Oncology Section, where he has worked since 2009. He is a certified Spiritual
Care Provider in Israel and a Board Certified Chaplain of the NAJC. Previous
research includes assessing Israeli patient interest in spiritual care, as
compared with in other cultures.
The presence of spiritual distress can significantly impact on
measures including quality of life, stress, and despair, and indicates
a need to bring in a spiritual caregiver. A certain percentage of
oncologic patients undoubtedly suffer from spiritual distress, but
how do they express it? In any given culture, that expression is likely
to change. The existing tools for evaluating spiritual distress or pain
were developed in the US, and before using them here we need
to assess their degree of cultural match to the Israeli context. In
this lecture, we will report on the results of a study carried out at
Rambam Medical Center, testing the cultural match of two existing
measures of spiritual distress.

Parents Remembering their Childhood Journey to Israel
through Sudan
SCP-C Ziv Re'i-Koren & Ilan Sahalo
Ziv Re'i Koren, SCP-C, has been a Doula for 11 years and is also a teacher
and a course coordinator in the Doula course run by the University of Haifa.
Four years ago she started her studies in Spiritual Care giving in "B'ruach"
in Shaarei Tsedek Hospital in Jerusalem. After studying for two years, Ziv
became the course assistant and worked as a Spiritual Care Giver in Rambam
and Shaarei Tsedek Hospitals.
As part of "Joint Ashalim" pilot project which is examining the
expansion of Spiritual Care to a variety of populations, there is a
group of Ethiopian parents to young children who went through
the journey from Sudan to Israel when they were children. Many
of them went through difficult experiences which have never been
discussed. Often those experiences echo in their lives as a parent,
a spouse and in daily life. Taking part in the group provides a space
for the story to be told and to be heard. It also provides a space
for the memory of the journey and the loss, through Spiritual Care
which is culturally and personally adapted.The lecture will talk about
the co-guidance of Ziv Re'i Koren – Spiritual Caregiver, and Ilan
Sahlo – Education adviser and group guide. It will also talk about
the "journey" of the group following their personal journey to Israel:
The dream about Jerusalem, leaving their home, the fear, the losses,
the dream breaking in face of reality, finding meaning and hope etc.

The Tanakh as a Family System
Rabbi Alan Abrams
Rabbi Alan Abrams is an ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education supervisor and
a PhD candidate in the Education and Jewish Studies program at NYU. He
holds Masters Degrees both in Talmud (JTS) and in Public Policy (Columbia
University). He has given workshops at chaplaincy conferences in both
America and Israel on spontaneous prayer and on "Working the Midrashic
Muscle." He is the author of Being a Light unto the Nations: Amid the
”hidden curriculum” of prayer, pastoral care and CPE, what do Jews have to
contribute?, an article that appeared in the 2012 issue of the Journal of Jewish
Spiritual Care.
Family Systems Theory claims it is not useful to view a person as
an isolated, independent entity -- rather, all people are embedded
in a series of relationships. The theory -- developed as part of
Family Therapy by Murray Bowen -- has been adapted, by Edwin
Friedman and others, for better understanding congregational and
pastoral relationships. The theory’s fundamental concepts -- like
the “identified patient” and relational triangles -- can be illustrated
by the biblical narrative’s family relationships in a way that can be
helpful both for understanding how to deliver better care and for
identifying helpful spiritual resources/narratives.

SCP-C Rabbi Valerie Stessin is a Spiritual Care Provider-Certified in Israel, and was
ordained as a conservative Rabbi. Together with Rabbi Miriam Berkowitz, she founded
Kashouvot, a non-for-profit geared to implement Spiritual Care in Israel.
In recent years, Eshel has been advancing programs to introduce spiritual support for elders
and those who care for them, including families and professional staff, with the intention
of expanding the tools available to support them in this unique phase of the lifecycle. In
2013 Eshel initiated a challenging pilot project in 16 Day Centers throughout the country
in collaboration with Tishkofet The leaders of this project at Eshel will present the structure,
course for liaison staff, and in-service training for chaplains. The Aleh Day Center in Yehud's
Director, social worker and chaplain will each present from her point of view how the project
was implemented. The field of spiritual support is new in Israel and requires sensitivity in its
introduction to new populations. In Yehud, the integration of pastoral care led to innovative
types of encounters: a workshop for staff on Life Transitions, sessions for foreign workers
on personal and professional identity and a gathering for the wider community focusing on
families' coping with the aging of a close relative. In parallel, spiritual care was integrated into
study groups for the elderly and in daily work of the staff. The program enables the staff to
examine ways in which spiritual support sparked change in the institutional culture.This new
conversation opened sensitive topics such as the place of the soul in elder care, attitudes
toward death, ways to deepen connections among staff member, and more.

Integrating Adolescent Faith Development in Care
Dr. Janice Haley
Directs the MSN PNP Program, Dr. Haley has 25 years of teaching, research
and advanced nursing clinical experience in child/adolescent health care.
Published 15 papers and presented on “strength” assessment and faith/
spirituality development in 5 countries. Research focuses on assisting parent
caregivers to cope with stresses encountered in providing ongoing care to
children/adolescents with intensive caregiving or end-of-life needs.
Although there are a number of studies published on the topic of
faith development, few address faith as a holistic health component
of adolescent development. This presentation describes then
synthesizes classic theoretical stages of adolescent development.
Brueggemann’s framework of human faith experience is utilized
as a framework to better understand and assist the adolescent to
move with God through this period of identity crisis. A variety of
interventions are presented to assist the nurse/nurse practitioner or
others working with the adolescent population to incorporate faith
development into the patient encounter, assisting the adolescent
toward a state of holistic well-being.

There are general barriers for spiritual support affecting all patients
which includes: lack of time and training, discomfort with the
subject, lack of interest/awareness in spiritual issues, and fear of
activity outside area of expertise. For the Muslim patients, there are
additional barriers, language barriers, lack of cultural understanding
by the hospital staff regarding the religious rituals and practices,
the practice of chaplaincy through a Christian framework, a lack of
trained Muslim chaplains, and a lack of awareness among Muslim
patients of the existing chaplaincy services.

Tziona Achishena
Tziona Achishena has worked as a singer, musician, and teacher in Israel
for over 10 years. She approaches singing as a spiritual practice, and as an
opportunity to experience wholeness. Her CPE training with Rabbi Jeffery
Silberman has enriched and informed this work, and in recent years she has
reentered the field of spiritual care as an educator and Melava Ruchanit.
Tziona integrates song in her work with the residents of Tzfat's nursing home,
as well as continuing to compose, record and perform her original music, of
which she has produced 7 CDs to date.
The secret of a transformative spiritual care connection is uncovered
when we meet in a place of eternal being that is both within and
beyond us as individuals. But how do we get there? This is a gift that
is sometimes given, when we can breathe in the space between
doing and being, approaching with awe the mystery of the human
will. In this holy place, sometimes, a song emerges. We will open a
listening circle that allows us to experience song as a transcendent
path that predates creation, and gives each participant tools for
integrating song into their spiritual care work.

Diagnostic criteria of PTSD have been modified to include those
affected by proxy, including parents of children with chronic illness.
Recent literature also notes the phenomenon of posttraumatic
growth in this population. Healthcare systems tasked with caring
for such children wish to better characterize these parents’
experiences as a means to optimizing patient care. In keeping
with the conference's "innovative and interdisciplinary" mission
statement, this project highlights the efforts by a medical team
to better treat chronically ill children through addressing their
parents' needs, and ultimately, a recognition that care for such
patients begins in the home.

Empathic Care Applied to ADHD Children
Daniela Muggia
Daniela Muggia is an Italian Thanatologist, winner of the 2008 Terzani Award
for the Medical Humanities. She studied under Sogyal Rinpoche and C. Boni.
Over 20 years of volunteering with the terminally ill produced her peculiar
approach: ECEL, Empathic Care at the End of Life, based on neurosciences,
quantum physics and Tibetan meditative techniques, presently a training
requested in hospitals, hospices, masters degrees in palliative care and
pedagogy. Co-author of The Impact of Empathy on children with ADHD (in
US from Sept. 2014).
When Empathic Carers trained in ECEL went into primary school
classes for bereavement the ADHD children responded in a
fantastic way to their meditative approach and empathic listening.
For the first time in their lives they could experience a state of
peace. Hence, they asked to be trained to provide these services.
Scientific literature explaining how this could happen is very rich.
Can meditation replace heavy chemical treatments and a new, noninvasive habit be built up in schools?

Rabbi Doctor Minna Bromberg
Rabbi Doctor Minna Bromberg is a singer-songwriter, rabbi, and Jewish
meditation teacher who uses song to help individuals and communities
unearth their inherent wholeness. Minna moved to Israel in August 2014 with
her husband Rabbi Alan Abrams. She will serve as the Coordinator of the
Year in Israel Program for the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College (Boston).
From the Exodus from Egypt to modern social movements
protest and freedom songs have helped people face challenges,
celebrate victories, pray for hope, and move forward despite
fear and doubt. In despair the captives sang “How can we sing
the Lord’s song in a strange land?” Yet they immediately sang,
“If I forget thee, O Jerusalem…” This song gave them hope,
teaching them how to survive exile. This workshop will explore
connections between protest/freedom songs and spiritual healing
and spiritual care. We will apply the strength of these songs to
our work as spiritual caregivers.

as means of hope when someone is in transition at the end of life.
These techniques of hope and resilience apply to family members
attending the death bed as much as the person who is dying. In the
workshop, we will sing and practice different tools and together
try to come to terms with the question of hope when there is no
hope. The purpose of the session is to look at death and dying in
Pastoral Care FACE TO FACE, and give participants concrete tools
of creativity and compassion which they may already have, but not
yet be totally empowered to use.

Discerning the Path to Alleviation
Dr. Tove Giske & Dr. Pamela Cone
Dr. Giske defended her PhD about patients waiting for a diagnosis in 2008.
She is the main investigator in Norway for a Multinational longitudinal
study of nursing students’ understanding & development of spiritual care
competences 2011—2014. Dr. Cone earned a PhD in 2006 with an emphasis
on former homeless mothers. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Norway in 2008,
and a visiting scholar spring 2014 where she worked collaboratively with Dr.
Giske researching spiritual care of students, teachers, nurses and patients.
They have both published articles and chapters nationally and internationally.
Providing spiritual care is part of holistic nursing and it is documented
that it enhances healing of body and mind. This workshop presents
and discusses findings from a mixed method study with 172
questionnaires and 8 focus group interviews of 22 nurses in diverse
settings in Norway. Results showed that about 1/3 report educational
preparation for spiritual care. A classical grounded theory design
was used for the interviews. The nurses’ main concern was found to
be "How to assist the patients in spiritual healing”. The participants
used three main strategies. Conditions related to patients, family,
nurses and workplace will be discussed. The study findings have high
relevance for diverse settings of professional work.

The Viddui as a Vehicle for Healing
Rabbi Eliot Baskin
Rabbi Eliot Baskin; D.Min.; DD. serves as Denver's Jewish Community
Chaplain and the Rabbinic Director of Rafael Spiritual Healing Center of
Jewish Family Service of Colorado. He also serves as the visiting spiritual
leader for Congregation Har Shalom in Durango; Colorado. He completed
his residency in CPE at the Mayo Clinic following ordination in 1985. He
became the first rabbi to earn the Doctor of Ministry degree in Pastoral
Care and Counseling in 1993 from Hebrew Union College where he did his
demonstration project on “The Use of Sacred Stories for Patients with AIDS.”
Talking the talk to help others walk the ultimate walk: "Tasks and
Rituals for the Dying" uses the traditional and contemporary viddui
to foster hope and resiliency for the "goses" and their loved ones.

Spiritual Needs in Hospitalization Far From Home
Rabbi Rena Arshinoff
Rabbi Rena Arshinoff obtained her nursing training in Montreal and
completed a Master’s degree in Epidemiology, worked for 20 years in clinical
research. She then attended Hebrew Union College, studied CPE following
Ordination, and became a certified chaplain in Canada. She works at Toronto
Western Hospital with the Neuroscience program. Her areas of interest
are spiritual needs in Parkinson’s Disease, bereavement and healing, and
Professional Grief. She volunteers with Bereaved Families of Ontario as a
group facilitator and Professional Advisor. Rena is currently pursuing a PhD in
Palliative Care.
Hospitalization is challenging for anyone but especially magnified for
patients who require transfer to a specialized center in a strange city.
Such transfers require great resilience by patients and families and
raise many emotions and concerns around isolation, loneliness, fear,
accommodation, finances, and navigating a new city. Little research
exists in the literature concerning the spiritual needs of this group
of patients. This session presents results of a study undertaken by
the Spiritual Care and Nursing departments to examine spiritual
concerns with the goal of developing a unique model of care to
assist such patients in identifying and maintaining hope.

Life Story Midrash: Toward Personal Transformation

Rabbi Dayle A. Friedman, MSW, MAJCS, BCC, has been at the forefront
of the development of a Jewish spiritual vision for aging. Her publications
include Jewish Pastoral Care and Jewish Visions for Aging (both Jewish Lights
Publishing). She currently offers training, consulting and spiritual guidance
through her practice, Growing Older: Wisdom + Spirit Beyond Midlife
In this experiential workshop, we will investigate the healing potential
of using the midrashic approach in framing and transforming life
stories. We will apply the tools developed by the rabbis for mining
our people’s holy texts to the sacred narratives of our lives, in order
to glean lessons from the past and directions for the future. We’ll
explore how we might use this tool in fostering resilience with
elders, as well as with others who are ill/suffering.

Chaplaincy Care Interventions
On March 31, 2014 six studies were released that launched a new
field of research in spiritual care in health care. These studies revealed
important advances in understanding the role of Spiritual Care in treating people facing
serious illness, including cancer and ALS. The studies were released at the inaugural
conference of HealthCare Chaplaincy Network (HCCN), Caring for the Human Spirit:
Driving the Research Agenda in Spiritual Care in Health Care. The goal of the research
project is to build the field of chaplaincy research by creating an interdisciplinary network
of experienced researchers and board certified chaplains and supporting field-advancing
research projects to better understand chaplaincy care in palliative care. Rev. Hall will share
his unique perspective on these exciting advances in the field.
Hospice care is a special form of care for people with life-limiting
illnesses — including cancer, stroke, heart disease, lung disease, liver
disease, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, ALS, Alzheimer’s and AIDS.
VITAS has been a pioneer and leader in the hospice movement since
1978, continuing today as a USA leading provider of hospice care
services. When medical treatments can no longer cure a disease, VITAS’ team of hospice
professionals, including a chaplain, still can do a great deal to control pain, reduce anxiety
and offer needed spiritual and emotional support to patients and their families. VITAS has
been a supporter of professional spiritual care both in Israel and the States for more than a
decade. VITAS sponsors a CPE unit under its auspices. VITAS Healthcare provides hospice
services wherever people with life-limiting illness reside and could benefit from our care.
Headquartered in Miami, Florida, VITAS Healthcare operates programs in 16 states and the
District of Columbia and is one of the nation’s largest providers of end-of-life care. The name
VITAS (pronounced VEE-tahss) is derived from the Latin word for life. It symbolizes the
VITAS mission: to preserve the quality of life for those who have a limited time to live.

Welcome
to the 26th Annual NAJC Conference
and 11th Annual Spiritual Care Conference
This is a momentous opportunity as we come together to learn and to celebrate more than a
decade of collaboration between NAJC and the various Israeli spiritual care organizations.
The conference theme, “Hope and Resilience, Innovative and Interdisciplinary Spiritual
Care,” speaks equally to all of us, around the globe. The goal of the conference is to offer
ways of incorporating innovative and effective interventions of spiritual care into our
professional practice. Further, we hope our conference will advance the interdisciplinary
dialogue between professional spiritual care providers (chaplains) and doctors, nurses,
psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and others so that we are all better equipped
to meet the spiritual needs of those whom we serve.
Conference highlights include:
The VITAS Healthcare Plenary, featuring: Rev. Eric J. Hall, President and Chief Executive
Officer, HealthCare Chaplaincy Network, New York, New York, who addresses “Caring
for the Human Spirit: Spiritual Research in Healthcare;”
The Rabbi Melvin J. Glatt Memorial Lecture featuring Dr. Ruth Calderon, MK, who will
remark on the spiritual renaissance occurring in the State of Israel. We honor and
remember Rabbi Glatt, a pioneer in pastoral care and chaplaincy and one of the founders
of NAJC.
William Neigher, Ph.D., Vice President, Chief Strategy Officer, Atlantic Health System,
Morristown, New Jersey, speaking on “Spirituality and Compassionate Healthcare in a
Healing Environment: Atlantic Health System’s Healing Culture;”
The establishment of the Rabbi Pesach Krauss Keter Shem Tov Award, through which we
recognize Rabbi Pesach Krauss’ Z"l unique contribution to Professional Spiritual care in
both America and Israel. The award will allow one certified Spiritual Care Provider the
opportunity to attend and present at the annual NAJC conference.
As part of this year’s conference, we are pleased to include experiential site visits to some
innovative spiritual care programs throughout Israel.
