The following paintings, detailing pivotal moments of the legend of ‘Zlatorog’ (‘Goldenhorn’), were exhibited in Bovec, Jesenice, Tolmin and Trenta between 2011-2012. The paintings are by the Amateur Painters in Bovec, Slovenia who are part of the Golobar Cultural Association and reside in villages surrounding Trenta, the home of this legend. The accompanying text is a description of each painting based on the poem ‘Zlatorog,’ written by Rudolf Baumbach in 1922. The Slovenian transcript is by Anton Funtek, with an English translation from Renata Kenda and Frances Brannon for the purposes of describing each work of art. 5 Helena Kenda Olje na platno / Oil on canvas “Bilo je v davnih, starodavnih časih in na planini bil je raj tedaj. Na Komni pašniki bili so sočni in v Bogatinu bil je skrit zaklad.” 6 Once upon a time high in the Alps lay a land like Paradise. The meadows of Komna were green and lush, and treasure lay hidden in the Bogatin mountain. Barbara Lipovec Olje na platno / Oil on canvas “Med skalami v planinah so živele skrivnostne, dobre vile: bele žene. Kjer lepe triglavske so rože rasle, tam bele koze so se v miru pasle.” In the Alpine meadows where beautiful Triglav flowers were growing, and white goats peacefully grazed, deep in the rocks there lived mysterious, good fairies known as The White Ladies. 7 Ksenija Mlekuž Akril na platno / Acrylic on canvas “Na čelu bil je Zlatorog, ki doslej ga nihče ni ubil, čeprav poskušali so mnogi lovci, a vse zaman, saj bil je neumrljiv.” 8 At the top of the mountain dwelt the mountain goat Goldenhorn. Although many hunters tried, to slay him none succeeded, as he was immortal. It so happened that in Trenta, there lived a young hunter who was popular far and wide. He lived at home caring for his beloved blind mother and he loved hunting in the mountains. Zato pa mora biti jim hvaležen in naj nikar jim raja ne kali, nikoli belih koz naj ne preganja, pri miru Zlatoroga naj pusti.” 10 Neighbours secretly whispered that the young hunter was protected by the magic of The White Ladies since he was born and even as a little boy they did not abandon him. In return, his thanks to them was never to disturb their paradise, never to hunt the white goats, and to leave Goldenhorn in peace. There was a tavern, standing beside the Soča river, tempting dry throats to come quench their thirst. Jerica, the daughter of the house, was a beauty, and many a heart she completely inflamed with passion. But she was steadfast in her ways for a long time. Despite advice given, she fell in love with the Trenta hunter. This daring young man brought her the most beautiful flowers from high in the mountains. Med plesom je devi zali drobil na uho laskava priznanja.” 12 In Spring the tavern re-opened its doors to travellers. Merchants from Italy always stopped there on their way and flattered Jerica. A young Italian quickly got up from a table inviting Jerica to dance. During the dance he flattered her and whispered compliments in her ear. His skilled mendacious and sweet words seduced the young girl. He even put a golden ring on her finger which provocatively sparkled. 13 David Černuta Olje na platno / Oil on canvas “Obdrži Laškega si petelina! Se v isti noči je zaobljubil, da v čelo Zlatoroga bo zadel.” 14 The Trenta hunter was very upset, “Keep that Italian rooster! He can be golden from top to toe but I will find the key to Bogatin and I will be richer than the him!”, he cried slamming the door, hurt and offended he left Jerica without saying goodbye. In the same night he vowed to behead Goldenhorn. Edini ključ k zakladu so njegovi čarobni rogovi. Brez njih ubog boš, kot si bil doslej. Zato za njim po stezi tej naprej!” Now the young hunter of Trenta would have calmed down, as he hurried up the mountains that night had he not met the Green Hunter, who fuelled his anger. “Greetings, hunter of the Trenta Valley”, the Green hunter said, the mountains hide a rich treasure! But the only key to the treasure is the goat’s magic golden horns. Without them, you will be poor as you are now. To find him follow this footpath ahead!” 15 Martin Berginc Olje in akril na platno / Oil and acrylic on canvas “Oprezno lovec cilju se je približal, in ko je bil le nekaj metrov stran, nenadoma je sonce poljubilo vrhove in oznanilo nov dan.” 16 The hunter cautiously approached the goat’s lair, and when he was only a few metres away, poised and ready to fire a shot, the sun suddenly kissed the tops of mountains and announced a new day. The shot reverberated through the mountains and, Goldenhorn’s legs weakened but only for a moment, then he rose again. The hunter, who thought he was dead, realized he had only injured him. 17 Silva Berginc Pastel na papirju / Pastel on paper “In spet je lovec kvišku se pognal, vodnika belih koz zasledoval. Čez čas zagledal ga je spet na skali, rogovi so se mu še bolj bleščali.” 18 He then set off in pursuit of the white goat’s tracks and in a while he saw him ahead standing on the rocks, his horns glistening even more. Ksenija Mlekuž Akril na platno / Acrylic on canvas “Ko proti njemu Zlatorog je skočil, ustrašil se je silno lovec mlad, noge so klecnile mu, s stene gorske je strmoglavil vznak je v prepad.” When Goldenhorn turned and threatened him, the young hunter felt fear, his legs weakened and trembled, and he fell headlong from the rock wall down the precipice onto the rocks below. 19 Janja Černuta Olje na platno / Oil on canvas “Medtem použil je nekaj rož Triglavskih in moč se v hipu mu je spet vrnila. Ponosno je na skali stal vzravnano, ko da krogla ga nikdar ni ranila.” 20 Goldenhorn proudly stood upright on the rocks eating some Triglav Flowers as his powers instantly regenerated as if the bullet had never touched him. In the spring the snows melted in the highlands. The gentle limpid, clear waters of the Soča river, which previously had calmly flowed, became a tumultuous, rushing river and its waves carried the body of the young man to the front of the tavern, where his love was waiting, regretful that she had been so conceited. Samo skalovje golo tam je zdaj.” 22 One day the herdsmen came down the valley, they brought strange news. The mountain paradise at Komna disappeared and with it the fairy nook of Karst. At Komna there was mountain paradise once, which the White Ladies abandoned. Only bleak rocks are there now.
