This year, we celebrate the first decade of the Festival. It has been a decade of moving, daring, different queer cinema. People ask me about the use of a LGBT film festival. After all, gay people are in every possible television show. The answer is very simple: In 2014, Israeli cinemas screened 280 feature films, out of which only 6 dealt directly with LGBT themes. One of the six, 52 Tuesdays, was distributed by TLVFest. It was also the only LGBT film made by a woman to be released throughout last year. One of our missions for this year is to reach yet more cities, communities, villages and kibbutzim, and provide as much LGBT cinema for as many people as possible. We also intend to continue promote Israeli cinema. Following the success of Fucking Different Tel Aviv, (Berlin International Film Festival) and of Guttman X 5 (Torino Gay & Lesbian Film Festival) we are already hard at work on our next project. Meanwhile, we assist short Israeli films, as usual. Last year, Eli Glazer's End of Season won tremendous accolades in LGBT festivals worldwide. At this year's Festival, two films we had supported will be screened: Sixth-Grade Slow Dance by Yotam David Cytter, and If You're Happy by Moran Rosenblatt and Gefen Ganani. A special guest at the upcoming Festival will be Alanté Kavaïté, who won the world cinema dramatic directing award at the 2015 Sundance Festival for her splendid The Summer of Sangaile. Another must-see is Teddy Award winner (2015 Berlin Festival) Stories of Our Lives, about the lives of Kenyan LGBT people. From Vietnam comes Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories, following its screening at the official competition of the 2015 Berlin Festival. Another cinematic gem is the must-see director's cut for 54 (Berlinale 2015) in the presence of directorMark Christopher and producer Jonathan King. The Israeli program is particularly diverse this year, with more than 30 new short films, most of which will premiere both locally and internationally. Two such premieres will be held for Karam – a Matter of Karma, by Paco Anselmi, and Lost in The White City by Gil Kofman and Tanner King Barklow. Third Person is a fascinating documentary by Sharon Luzon, dealing with the lives of intersex Israelis. Furthermore, a special selection of films will be screened in honor of Netalie Braun and of Dan Wolman and his important films Hide and Seek and Tied Hands. Despite numerous budgetary difficulties and political and social challenges, we are going ahead with the societal change we are trying to bring about. The Festival brings the world's finest LGBT films to Israel and hosts extraordinary international filmmakers. It also helps Israelis in the film industry get together with leading international festival directors, and finally, promotes a diverse array of Israeli programs in film festivals across the globe, from South America to Scandinavia. We do what we do because culture is vital for tolerance. In 2005 she was the first out lesbian and first African American director who directed a film for Disney "Herbie Fully Loaded" starring Lindsay Lohan and Michael Keaton. Among other things, she produced more than twenty episodes and directed nine episodes of the most successful lesbian series of all time "The L Word." Although she was based in Hollywood, Robinson had not relinquished her independent beginnings and created the successful internet series “Girltrash!” which later became a musical independent movie directed by Alex Kondracke. This year's festival will screen the cult film D.E.B.S. that just celebrated a decade, last year. It mixes the youth film genre like "Clueless" with the world of espionage and James Bond movies. Today Robinson continues to break stereotypes as Consulting Producer in the successful series “How to Get Away with Murder.” We are patiently awaiting her next film. D.E.B.S. Since its inception, TLVFest has made it a goal to bring diverse transgender content to the fore. In 2009 Greek film Strella opened the Festival, in the presence of transgender actress Betty Vakalidou. That year we also held a transgender cinema workshop, hosted by Canadian director Gwen Haworth (She's a Boy I Knew). Throughout the years numerous transgender filmmakers participated in TLVFest. We have screened dozens of transgender-themed films; among them was the world premiere of "Melting Away". With the help of MTV Israel, we will hold a free screening of The T Word, produced by and starring Laverne Cox. The film contains interviews with young transgender people, aged 12 to 22, from across the United States. Within the Narative Competition we will screen suspense Chilean drama The Guest. Within the Documentary Competition, excellent Canadian film My Prairie Home will be screened. The Panorama includes the following transgender films: Drunktown's Finest, exploring the world of a transgender woman living in a Native American town and Mexican comedy Lonely Stars. This year's most surprising film is undoubtedly sci-fi thriller Predestination, starring Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Training Day), which takes the subject of gender into new, complex directions. Also on show are films that feature prominent transgender characters, such as wild and funny Dike Hard or moving Thai drama How to Win at Checkers (Every Time). Our guest this year is Maya Jafer ("Transparent"), a holistic doctor, actor, dancer & transgender activist. She was born and raised in a very strict, traditional Muslim family in India. This is an opportunity to thank two friends who have been accompanying TLVFest for many years, without whom our transgender program would never have been so luxuriant and refreshing – Ronny Almog and Emil Ray. -14- In Memory of Suzy Capó On the 9th of January 2015, Suzy Capó, one of the firmest friends TLVFest has ever had, decided to end her life. Suzy was a fixture in the world of LGBT festivals, an expert on Queer, Brazilian, and general cinema. She loved life and bit into them wholeheartedly. Suzy was a co-founder and for many years the artistic director of MIX Brazil, the largest LGBT film festival in Latin America. She established the queer PopPorn Festival and curated programs for various festivals: The São Paolo Asian Film and Culture Festival, the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, and the São Paolo International Short Film Festival. Suzy Capó founded Festival Filmes, the first LGBT film distribution company in Brazil. She held a major role in establishing the Felix Awards, the Brazilian counterparts of the Berlinale Teddys. In 2008, Capó was the driving force behind the extensive Israeli cinema program at São Paolo, and was our guest at the 2009 TLVFest. With the help of the Institut, this year we will present two collections curated at the two most important German LGBT film festivals: the Hamburg Queer Film Festival and XPOSED International Queer Film Festival Berlin, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in May of 2015. Within the Official Competition we will show suspense drama Bright Night. Within the Documentary Competition, two films will be shown: Prison System 4614 by Jan Soldat, screened at the 2015 Berlinale, and Not Safe for Work by Hendrik Schäfer, both of which handle sexuality in a way not yet seen on the big screen. Both directors will attend the screenings. Within the Panorama, charming, family-oriented film I Feel Like Disco by Axel Ranisch will be screened. This year TLVFest will host several German guests. From XPOSED comes Michael Stütz, coordinator and program director at the Panorama section of the Berlinale, who is also a Teddy Awards advisor and program coordinator. Our Hamburg Festival guests are Sebastian Beyer and Katja Briesemeister; the latter curated one of the two German collections for this year's TLVFest. As part of the film festival directors' panel we will present a documentary on the Hamburg Festival, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last October. Another German visitor is Martin Wolkner, director of the Filmfest Homochrom, which takes places in both Dortmund and Cologne. The 5 episodes, which address topics such as the search for identity and self-determination, enforced heterosexualisation and the struggle for acceptance, have one thing in common: they all describe the need for love and the fear of fulfilling this love openly. Time and again, their fears prompt the question: it is better to hide away, resign oneself to the situation and leave the country, or to stay and fight openly for sexual diversity? In spite of the film being banned from public screenings in Kenya, the members of The NEST have opted for the latter and are determined to continue their struggle for recognition.
