FCAT 2.0 Diagnostic Test Grade 3 Reading Administration Instructions These instructions for FCAT 2.0 Diagnostic Test – Grade 3 Reading should be read out loud to the students. The suggested testing time is 90 minutes (with a break after 45 minutes). You may choose to administer the test in shorter sessions. If you do, adjust these instructions accordingly. Today you will take the Grade 3 Reading Diagnostic Test. You should have no materials on your desk except your pencil, your test booklet, and your answer sheet. Do not open your test booklet. Say Look at the box at the top of the front page of your answer sheet. Make sure that your answer sheet has your name, student number, our school name and your current grade level printed on it. If this information is already printed on your answer sheet, sit quietly. Do not write anything in the sections titled “Student Number” or “Last Name, First Name, and MI.” Are there any questions? Check to see that each student has the correct answer sheet. Teachers MUST write and darken the student name and student number for any student who does not have a pregridded answer sheet. Answer any questions. Say Turn your answer sheet over. Print your first and last names on the top of the sheet, next to Student Name. Hold up a copy of the answer sheet and show the students where they should print their names. Say Look at the front cover of your test booklet. Print your first and last names next to Student Name. Hold up a copy of the test booklet and show the students where they should print their names. The third grade answer sheet has letters above the bubbles. You may demonstrate to students exactly how to find and darken the correct bubble by copying the figure below on the board and walking students through the sample questions: X Y Z A O F O A O B O G O B O C O H O C O D O I O D O Before you begin this test, you will learn to darken bubbles on the answer sheet. This answer sheet is a little bit different, so please pay careful attention to me. Say Open your test booklet to the inside of the cover. You will see the words “Sample Reading Questions” at the top of the page. Read along with me silently as I read the first question. “How are Bloocher and Chilly Bones ALIKE?” The correct answer to this question is “B,” which is, “They are eager to make friends.” Next you see examples of darkened bubbles. First, you see the correct way to darken the bubble. Then, next to the word INCORRECT, are ways you SHOULD NOT darken the bubble. Over At the top of your answer sheet, you will see a box with the letters X, Y, and Z in a pink box. Say I have copied these sample answer rows on the board. At this time, find and darken answer “B” on the first row, labeled “X.” Make sure you darken the bubble, underneath the letter, completely, as I will do for you on the board. Demonstrate for students how to locate and darken answer “B.” Make sure that students darken answer “B” on their answer sheets for question X. Answer any questions. Say Let’s look at Question “Y,” which begins with the words “It is easy for a diver to step on a stingray by mistake because stingrays…” The correct answer is “G,” “can cover themselves with sand.” On your answer sheet, look for question “Y” and completely darken the bubble under the letter “G.” Demonstrate for students how to locate and darken answer “G.” Make sure that students completely darken the bubble under “G” on their answer sheets for question “Y.” Answer any questions. Say The third sample question, “Z,” says, “How are Peter and Mrs. Casey ALIKE?” The correct answer is “D” which says “They both receive letters that make them sad.” On your answer sheet, look for question “Z” and darken the “D”. Demonstrate for students how to locate and darken answer “D.” Walk around to make sure students are darkening answers correctly. Answer any questions. When you feel comfortable that students know how to darken answers correctly, you can continue with the rest of the instructions. You will have 90 minutes to complete the Reading Diagnostic test. After 45 minutes, we will take a short break. On page 1 you will see the Table of Contents. Read silently as I read aloud. “Here is a list with pictures to help you locate the selections in your Reading Test.” There are pictures next to each title that will help you remember which story or article you are working on. Say Read each article or story. Then choose the best answer to each question that follows. Darken the bubble for the answer you have chosen on your answer sheet. If you change your answer, be sure to erase completely. Try to answer every question. If you aren’t sure how to answer a question, skip it and keep going. After you have answered all the other questions, go back and answer any questions you skipped. Are there any questions? Pause. Answer any questions. Next, we need to check each page through the end of the test booklet to see that all page numbers are in order and that there are no missing or upside-down pages. Say Beginning with page 1, check each page number through the end of the test booklet. If you see any problems, raise your hand. If not, close the test booklet and sit quietly. Wait until all students finish checking their individual test booklets. Say Now reopen your test booklet to page 1. You may begin. Put the starting and the break times on the board. While students are taking the test, move around the room. Check to see that students are darkening their answers on the answer sheet, and not in the test booklet. Next After 45 minutes, Say Stop. Put your pencil down and put your answer sheet in your test booklet to keep your place. Close your test booklet. You may stand and stretch, but do not talk. Make sure that all test booklets are closed. After a short break, Now be seated. You still have 45 minutes to complete the Reading Diagnostic, and I will let you know when you have 10 minutes left. If you finish early, you may review your work. Say Open your test booklet to the page where your answer sheet is located. You may now continue working. Put the ending time on the board. While students are taking the test, move around the room. Check to see that students are darkening their answers on the answer sheet, and not in the test booklet. After 35 minutes, Say You have 10 minutes to complete the test. After 10 more minutes, or if all students have finished earlier, Say STOP. Close your test booklet. Place your answer sheet on top of the test booklet and put your pencil on your desk.
