Installing Star Printers On Ubuntu/Kubuntu 10.04 (Ethernet & USB)

This application note shows how to install a Star Micronics TSP650 printer on Ubuntu 10.04, but also applies to any USB or
Ethernet Star Micronics Printer and also applies to Kubuntu 10.04.
Pre-Requisites:
The latest Linux CUPS driver for which can be downloaded from the Star Micronics website: http://www.starm.jp/eng/dl/dl02_06_02spsd.htm#linux

Installing Prerequisites and CUPS Driver
1) Open Terminal and type in each line separately:
sudo apt-get install libcupsys2-dev
sudo apt-get install libcupsimage2-dev
sudo apt-get install alien
2) In terminal, change the directory to the driver folder in the Linux CUPS package. (For example: cd
/home/tech/Desktop/starcupsdrv-3.1.1_linux/Driver )
3) Type the following command in terminal: sudo alien –i starcupsdrv-3.1.1.1-1.i386.rpm. If prompted, type in the
password.
The CUPS driver and all necessary prerequisites are now installed. Refer to the “Installing a USB Printer” section to install
and configure a USB Star Micronics printer, or the “Installing an Ethernet Printer” to install and configure an Ethernet Star
Micronics printer.

Installing a USB Printer
*Note – Before starting this section, make sure that all the pre-requisites and the Linux CUPS driver have been installed. If
not, refer to the Installing Prerequisites and CUPS Driver.
1) Plug the printer into the computer and turn it on, the computer will automatically detect and add the printer.
2) Access CUPS by typing in localhost:631 in the address bar on an Internet browser, then click on Printers.
3) Select the appropriate printer from the queue list.

4) Click on the Administration drop down menu and then click on Set Default Options.
5) Select 72 * 200mm for the Media Size, and then click on Set Default Options. If prompted, type in the user name and
password.

6) Click on the Maintaince drop down menu and then click on Print Test Page.
Congratulations, you have successfully configured your USB Star Micronics printer and have successfully
printed out a test page!

Installing an Ethernet Printer
*Note – Before starting this section, make sure that all the pre-requisites and the Linux CUPS driver have been installed.
Perform a hardware self test on the printer by turning the power off, holding the feed button down, and turning the printer
back on. It will print two tests. The second test will show the current IP parameters at the bottom of the page. It will display
the DHCP or BOOTP IP address. If it shows all zeros with “Didn’t obtain”, an IP address must be manually assigned via
Terminal.
To manually assign an IP address using the arp command: Open Terminal and type in ‘arp –s IP address MAC address’. (
For example: arp –s 192.168.192.45 00:11:62:05:1D:DD)
1) In terminal, type telnet and the IP address. (For example: telnet 192.168.192.45)
2) Type in root for the username, and public for the password and then press Enter.

3) Type 1 to select IP Parameters Configuration and then press Enter.
4) Type 1 to select the static IP configuration and then press Enter.
5) Type 1 to change the IP address, type in the desired IP address to set for the printer and then press Enter. (For
example: 192.168.192.45)
6) Type ‘2’, then Enter to change the Subnet Mask, type in the desired Subnet Mask to set for the printer and
then press Enter. (For example: 255.255.255.0)

7) Type 99 to select Back to Main Menu and then press Enter.
8) Type 98 to select Save & Restart and then press Enter.
9) Type 1 to select Save & Configuration printing & Restart device and then press Enter. The printer will
restart and print out the IP configuration that has been set.

10) Access CUPS by typing in localhost:631 in the address bar on an Internet browser, then click on Administration, and
then click on Add Printer under the Printers section.
11) Under the Other Network Printers section choose LPD/LPR Host or Printer, and then click on Continue.

12) Type in the device Connection as follows - lpd://IP address/printer name (For example lpd://192.168.192.45/TSP650Ethernet ), and then press Continue.
13) Type in the printer’s name (required), description (not required), and location (not required). If the
printer will be shared, click on the checkbox next to ‘Share This Printer’.

14) Select STAR in the Make drop down box, and then click on Continue.
15) Choose the appropriate printer model that matches the printer model, and then click on Add Printer.

16) Change the Media Size to 72mm * 200mm, and then click on Set Default Options. If prompted for type
the username and password.
17) Click on the Maintaince drop down menu and then click on Print Test Page.
Congratulations, you have successfully configured your Ethernet Star Micronics printer and have successfully
printed out a test page!
